The 13th No-hitter in FOOL-X history. This is the second no-hitter that White has pitched in his career, his last coming in 1971

No-Hit Masterpiece by White
Wednesday, June 9th, 1976: Taylor White was pretty calm about his no-hitter -- until the last three outs. "You really become conscious of every pitch then. The adrenaline level kicks up even higher. And everybody in the ballpark knows a no-hitter is on the line. The crowd is on its feet. One mistake and it's all over."

But on this day at Bishops Ballpark White of the London Bishops was in complete command, not allowing the Mexico City Aztecs a single base hit in the 6-0 victory.

"Obviously, you never think this will happen," he said. "I don't know if it's really sunk in yet." White faced 27 batters, had 10 strikeouts and 1 walk in a dominating effort. "To do this you have to have a good defense behind you, too."

"He was on from the get-go," one of the Aztecs said. "He throws quite a few pitches. He was hitting his spots and keeping us off balance. It was a great game by him."

Checking out his stats for the season, White has registered 9 wins and 5 losses in 17 starts, 2.87 ERA and struck out 96 batters in 109.2 innings.

Tizzard Pounds 3 HR
Saturday, June 12th, 1976: Every now and then, the right things happen at the right time. Tommy Tizzard discovered that when he smashed three homers at Legends Ballpark during today's 8-4 win over the New York Legends.

The Ann Arbor right fielder said in the postgame interview, "I got three balls to hit and nailed all three of them. The first was a hanging curve, the second was right down the middle and the last one was a good pitch, but I guessed right and put the wood to it."

Tizzard finished the day with 3 hits in 4 at-bats and 5 RBIs.

T. Tizzard struck out in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off I. Ordóńez in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off I. Ordóńez in the 6th, hit a three-run home run off I. Ordóńez in the 7th and walked in the 9th.

Tizzard is currently batting .342 with 19 home runs, 66 RBIs and 59 runs scored. He has 93 hits in 272 at-bats.

Neat little story here. O'Reilly becomes only the second pitcher in FOOL-X history to win 250 games. He did not pick an easy game to do it in either as he beats the only other pitcher in FOOL-X history with 250+ wins (Morales) to accomplish it!

Cleveland Over Spring 3-2, 250-th Win for O'Reilly
Sunday, June 13th, 1976: It was a special day at Ballpark of Cleveland for Cleveland's Tom O'Reilly. The Naps ace logged his 250th career win against the Lions. In the 3-2 decision O'Reilly tossed 8 innings, surrendered 5 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.

"I'm real fortunate that I had the opportunity to play with such good players during my career," said O'Reilly. "I just couldn't have drawn it up any better. I'm glad I did it in this uniform, too. Cleveland is a great organization to play for."

In career stats, the 41-year-old O'Reilly has won 250 and lost 164, recording 2756 strikeouts and 510 walks in 3784 innings with a 3.41 ERA. Opponents have hit .262 against him.

Big Win for Freedom Hall, Gets Save #300
Thursday, June 24th, 1976: Once again Warren Hall took the mound for Washington with the game on the line, a scenario that has played out hundreds of times for the Freedom and their top reliever. And like he has several hundred times before, Hall closed out the victory over the Mexico City Aztecs. This save, however, was a bit more special than most -- it was his 300th career save. The 30-year-old bullpen specialist shut down Mexico City on 1 run and 1 hit, while working 1 innings in the 4-3 win at Freedom Field.

"Early in my career, 300 saves was the only goal I had - if I could be around long enough to get it," Hall said. "I thought to myself, if I could get 300, I'd feel like I'd accomplished something."

Since coming into the league, Hall has registered 300 career saves.

Boulanger Joins 3-HR Club
Thursday, June 24th, 1976: Bombs away!
New York bombardier Michel Boulanger set his sights on the stands and blasted three balls over the fence in a 13-7 win over the Virginia Beach Surf. It was a powerful performance that should keep the fans at Legends Ballpark buzzing for days.

He spoke to the writers in the postgame press room and said, "I guess you could say I was a good guesser today... especially on the last one... I was ahead in the count, so I got set for a certain pitch... and got it... all of it."

For the game the New York first baseman had 3 hits in 3 at-bats, drove in 5 and scored 4 runs.

M. Boulanger hit a two-run home run off A. Hansen in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off A. Hansen in the 3rd, walked in the 5th, walked in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off A. García in the 7th.

So far in 1976 Boulanger is batting .326 with 28 home runs, 76 RBIs and 58 runs scored. He has 99 hits in 304 at-bats and a .405 OBP.

Morales Stands Out, Choice for Best Pitcher
Thursday, July 1st, 1976: It was a very good month for Mauro Morales in June. The 35-year-old veteran starter for the Spring Lions outpitched everybody -- young and old -- to claim the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award earlier today.

Morales ran up a 3-2 record in his 6 starts during the month. In 45.2 innings he fanned 40 and recorded a 2.56 ERA.

His record for the year is 15-2 in 21 starts and Morales has a 2.02 ERA.

Gómez CL's #1 Pitcher in June
Thursday, July 1st, 1976: Carlos Gómez has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in June and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Clowns bullpen ace collected 7 saves and 14 strikeouts in 12 innings, holding the opposition to a .140 average and posting a 1.50 ERA and a 2-0 record.

This season Gómez has 18 saves. In 39 relief appearances he has tossed 40 innings, struck out 40 and issued 5 walks with a 4-3 record. The Indianapolis reliever has recorded a 3.83 ERA and allowed the opposition to hit .224 when he is in the game.

Hey, it is a Nemoto sighting!

Nathaniel O'Farrell Named RL Rookie of Month

Thursday, July 1st, 1976: Youngster Nathaniel O'Farrell emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from New York deserved the honor, batting .441 with 5 home runs and 14 runs batted in. Is the month of June a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let O'Farrell enjoy the limelight.

Thus far this season O'Farrell is hitting .355 with 13 home runs, 39 RBIs and 56 runs scored. He has 77 hits in 217 at-bats and has played in 52 games.

Nemoto Voted June's Best CL Rookie

Thursday, July 1st, 1976: Eichiro Nemoto is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In June the Boston hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .258 average with 23 hits, 1 home run and 8 RBIs.

On the season, Nemoto is batting .277 with 7 home runs and 36 RBIs. He has played in 82 games.

Hit #2000 for Freedom Sosa
Sunday, July 4th, 1976: José Sosa was bubbling over with joy, celebrating his 2000th hit in the Washington 6-5 victory over the Clowns at Freedom Field.

"I learned what hard work, focus, dedication, and opportunity can do. This is how it pays off."

The 34-year-old left fielder achieved that milestone with 2 hits in 4 at-bats to join the exclusive 2000-hit club.

His manager said, "José plays the same every day and every inning -- with all his heart. That's why he's such a special player."

In his 1545-game career Sosa is hitting .330 with 2000 hits, 384 home runs, 1186 runs scored and 1179 RBIs.

Wolverines Halt González's Hit Streak
Monday, July 12th, 1976: Cleveland triumphed over Ann Arbor today 4-3. However, that was not the whole story. Naps shortstop Fernando González failed to get a hit for the first time in 22 games. González went hitless in 3 at-bats and had his streak broken.

Commenting to reporters at his press conference, he said, "Some days the past few weeks I carried the club, today they carried me. No matter what, it is always good to win a ballgame."

Currently González is batting .260 with 8 home runs, 43 RBIs and 62 runs scored.

Homer #300 for Ann Arbor's Tizzard
Sunday, July 18th, 1976: Ann Arbor's outstanding right fielder Tommy Tizzard joined the 300 home run club today at Legends Ballpark with a booming blast in the Wolverines win over the Legends. They topped New York 18-7.

On his milestone day Tizzard had 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 5 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Tongue-in-cheek he told the press, "Don't tell me when I get close to the next milestone. Just tell me after I reach it. It will be easier to hit that way."

His career numbers show Tizzard is currently carrying a .303 lifetime batting average with 300 home runs and 998 RBIs.

Butler Twirls Freedom to Shutout Win
Monday, July 26th, 1976: Before the game Chandler Butler liked his chances and his instincts proved to be right. In a superb outing the Freedom pitcher whitewashed the Mexico City Aztecs 10-0.

Butler said in the clubhouse afterward, "I just had a feeling it was going to be my day. My control was awesome. I could throw my curveball even when I was behind in the count."

The Washington starter held Mexico City scoreless, giving up 3 hits while registering 10 strikeouts and issuing 1 walk.

"We didn't have very many good at-bats," the Aztecs manager said in his postgame interview.

"When that happens, you usually lose."

This season Butler has crafted a 9-7 mark with a 3.43 ERA in 147 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .266 against him and he has 86 strikeouts.

Continental League Announces Top Starter
Sunday, August 1st, 1976: Whether Edgardo Meléndez stays in Boston beyond this season remains to be seen, but while he's here he's making the most of it. In July the 28-year-old certainly pulled out all the stops by winning the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

He put up some fancy numbers with a 4-0 record and and an ERA of 1.62. In 44.1 innings he struck out 26, surrendered 36 hits, 9 walks and proved to be a solid performer in 6 starts last month.

Season-to-date Meléndez has rung up 10 wins and 8 losses in 23 appearances. He has an ERA of 3.52 and has fanned 88 batters in 140.2 innings.

We may have some records in danger this season. Esteban Franco has the record for Home Runs (62) and RBI (184) in a season, back in 1964.

Maximo Guerrero is on pace currently for 63 Home Runs and Boulanger is on pace for 177 RBI.

Freedom Sosa Sizzles with Cycle
Tuesday, August 24th, 1976: Most fans have never seen a player get a single, double, triple and home run all in one game -- but it happened today at The Tickle Trunk. José Sosa of the Washington Freedom hit for the cycle against Balzac. He went 4-6 in the 20-8 victory, scored 4 runs and had 5 runs batted in. It was a day to remember for both Sosa and the fans.

J. Sosa grounded out in the 1st, doubled in the 4th, grounded out in the 5th, hit an RBI triple in the 7th, singled in the 9th and hit a GRAND SLAM off F. Serrano in the 9th.

Looking at his present stats, Sosa has compiled a .357 batting average in 133 games with a .451 on-base percentage, while hitting 36 home runs and driving in 116 runs.

In June the Boston hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .258 average with 23 hits, 1 home run and 8 RBIs.

On the season, Nemoto is batting .277 with 7 home runs and 36 RBIs. He has played in 82 games.

The first of many we hope. Thanks all for the help making sure I didn't kill him off...

And man is our team charging hard. I don't know if we can overcome that start though...

Sosa is the 6th player in FOOL-X history with 400 Home Runs or more!

Sosa Makes 400 Mark

Tuesday, August 31st, 1976: Boston defeated Washington today 6-5 and took some of the joy out of José Sosa's 400th career home run.

"I just wanted to get a good swing on the ball all day," Sosa said. "And I did."

Despite the loss, it was a good game for the 34-year-old Freedom left fielder. He had 1 hit, scored 1 run and had 2 RBI.

The Resettlers manager said, "You could see he was aggressive up there. The worst thing we did was throw him a strike. It probably would have been better if threw the ball outside of the strike zone every time he came to the plate because he seemed like he was in a hurry to get it over with."

For his career Sosa is hitting .330 with 400 homers, 1230 RBIs and 2067 hits.

O'Farrell Voted August's #1 Newcomer
Wednesday, September 1st, 1976: Nathaniel O'Farrell was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 24-year-old right fielder definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. In 17 games O'Farrell batted .397 for New York, slapping 29 hits in 73 at-bats with 9 home runs, drove in 25 runs and scored 20 times.

We could have a fun little home run race down the stretch here, between the two new York Guerreros.

Maximo is on pace for 62 Home Runs (equal to the record)
Ignacio is on pace for 61 Home Runs
