Bang-up Game: Rosebotham Slams 3 Homers
Monday, April 5th, 1976: Patrick Rosebotham was in a home run mode today at Legends Ballpark. The Portland left fielder massacred Legends pitching, cracking out three home runs and going 3-4 with 5 RBIs and scoring 3 runs. But this sensational performance didn't really matter. New York won the ballgame 13-10 despite the three homers.

"I wish a big 'W' had come with this," he said. "It's great to hit three homers, but the bottom line is whether you win or lose."

Nonetheless, Rosebotham will now have a place in the league record book.

"I guess when you're hot, you're hot," he said. "I'm not going up there trying to hit home runs. I put the good part of the bat on it and luckily three of them went out today."

P. Rosebotham hit a solo-shot off M. Vera in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off M. Vera in the 3rd, hit a three-run home run off M. Vera in the 5th and grounded out in the 7th.

This year Rosebotham is batting .263 with 5 hits and 4 home runs. He has scored 4 times and has batted in 6 runs.

Number 300 for Pegan

Ann Arbor Wolverines slugging first baseman José Pegánswatted his way to the 300 home run mark today as the Wolverines fell to the New York 13-6.

For his part, Pegán chipped in 5 runs batted in, scored 2 runs and collected 2 hits in 4 at-bats, but it was not enough to turn the tide.

"It was a special day for José," the team publicist said afterward, "He was disappointed at the result, but everyone was all smiles as he crossed home plate. We're proud of him."

As far as career numbers Pegán has compiled a .283 batting average and collected 1194 hits, 301 home runs and 859 RBIs.

Tommy Tizzard Drills 3 HR in One Game
Thursday, April 8th, 1976: If you were sitting in the bleachers and brought your glove to the Wolverines-Legends game, there was a good chance you'd catch one of the three home runs hit by Tommy Tizzard. The Wolverines right fielder repeatedly sent eager fans scurrying to catch a souvenir and led Ann Arbor to a 23-11 win over New York.

"Hey, the three homers were great, but I'm just trying to help my ballclub... not thinkin' about home runs. I'm just thinkin' about winning ballgames. When you think about home runs, you very seldom get 'em," he philosophized in the postgame press conference.

Tizzard was 4-6 on the day with 7 RBI.

T. Tizzard grounded out in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off I. Ordóńez in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 5th, flied out in the 6th, hit a three-run home run off B. Tso in the 7th and hit a two-run home run off B. Rodríguez in the 8th.

This season Tizzard is batting .438 with 3 home runs.

Those games in New York are like football scores. That has to be hell on the Legends pitching staff

José Pegán Strokes 3 Home Runs
Friday, April 9th, 1976: Regardless of where you stand on the "hardest thing to do in sports" argument, one thing everyone can agree on, is that hitting three home runs in one game is quite an amazing feat. That's exactly what José Pegán did today at Legends Ballpark. He went deep three times and carried his team to victory in the Ann Arbor Wolverines 13-7 win over New York.

"It all came together. I was seeing the ball well and I got some good pitches to hit," Pegán said. "Good things happen, when that happens."

He blistered the Legends for 3 hits, batted in 6 runs and scored 3 times.

The New York skipper said, "It ain't like we weren't trying. He was hot and really torched my boys today."

J. Pegán struck out in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off L. Love in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off L. Love in the 5th, hit a GRAND SLAM off B. Tso in the 7th and flied out in the 9th.

This season Pegán has 8 home runs and a .345 batting average.

Alonso Guns Down Mexico City
Monday, April 12th, 1976: A pitcher's main job is to keep the opposition off the scoreboard and Balzac pitcher Edgardo Alonso did just that today in a 4-0 victory over the Mexico City Aztecs at Estadio Azteca. He gave up no runs in his start, permitted 2 hits and had 7 strikeouts.

Ortíz Booms 3 out of the Park
Wednesday, April 21st, 1976: What did Domingo Ortíz eat for breakfast prior to his game against Boston? Whatever it was, it provided some surprising power as the Washington shortstop smacked three balls up and out of the park at Resettlers Ballpark. His power surge sparked the Freedom to a 9-7 victory over the Resettlers.

He told BNN reporters, "When they throw it in your wheelhouse, you got a shot at a homer. I got three shots today and nailed them all."

On his 3-homer day he went 3 for 4, scored 3 times, drove in 7 and put his name in the league record book.

D. Ortíz hit a two-run home run off M. Torres in the 1st, struck out in the 2nd, walked in the 5th, hit a two-run home run off D. Symons in the 7th and hit a three-run home run off J. Alvarado in the 8th.

So far this year Ortíz is batting .310 with 8 home runs.

Bujold Dominates Grocers in Shutout
Thursday, April 22nd, 1976: "I hope we miss him next time," the Portland manager said. "Bujold certainly pitched a strong game against us today. He was in a groove, throwing everything for strikes. Throwing hard. Changing speeds."

New York starter Yann Bujold tamed the Portland Grocers 2-0 with a 1-hit shutout, finishing the game with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk in a sharp outing.

"I enjoy facing a team like that where I can get an out on one, two or three pitches," Bujold said. "It gives me a chance to be a lot more aggressive."

In 5 starts this season Bujold has registered a 4-0 record and a 1.98 ERA.

Tanguay Whitewashes Grocers
Wednesday, April 28th, 1976: Jérôme Tanguay was sneaky fast, on the mark and hard to hit today. He blanked the Portland Grocers 4-0 on 2 hits and had 1 walk and 11 strikeouts.

"You know what he's going to throw. You know what to expect. And you still can't hit it," the Portland skipper told reporters after the shutout loss to the Cleveland Naps.

"He just had a real deceiving fastball today and he was throwing it for strikes."

This season Tanguay has been credited with no saves. In no relief appearances and 41.1 innings pitched he has a 4-1 won-lost mark, 2.61 ERA and 36 strikeouts

Continental League Announces #1 Starter
Saturday, May 1st, 1976: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Noah Lemmens still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in April. The 33-year-old starter for Indianapolis was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and 1 loss with 12 strikeouts in his 5 starts, putting up a fine 2.02 ERA in 35.2 innings of work.

Guerrero Snares RL Top Batter Award in April
Saturday, May 1st, 1976: Free agent-to-be Máximo Guerrero has inflated his asking price over the past 30 days by winning the Republic League Batter of the Month.

In April, the 29-year-old New York left fielder hit .324 with 15 home runs and 32 RBIs.

If he keeps putting numbers like that up, he could be hauling in a big wad of cash at this time next year.

Saturday, May 1st, 1976: José Guevara battered Continental League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

It only took 15 seasons but you have a nice thing going on up there. Hopefully that huge Cook contract doesn't limit you from keeping too many of your other key components.

Clark Gets #300
Sunday, May 2nd, 1976: "I wasn't trying to hit a homer. I just wanted to make contact."
That's what Bob Clark told reporters after he made baseball history today at Lions Ballpark. The prolific slugger belted home run #300 in the Virginia Beach Surf 8-7 victory over the Spring Lions.

The standout right fielder collected 3 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored.

"I guess this puts me in baseball's elite," said Clark. "I don't feel any different. I probably should, but I don't. Still, it is a nice achievement. I did get a little excited, didn't I?"

In 1164 career games Clark is hitting at a .272 pace with 1201 hits with 219 doubles, 55 triples and 300 homers while scoring 787 runs and racking up 921 RBIs. He logged 579 walks and owns a .359 on-base percentage.

Grocers Shut out by Ortíz
Friday, May 21st, 1976: "Alfredo Ortíz is really a good pitcher when he throws strikes early in the count," said his manager after the Spring hurler tossed a complete game 1-hit shutout against the Portland Grocers.

"I went right after each hitter, trying to get ahead in the count," said Ortíz. "I wanted them to swing the bats and keep my pitch count down. It worked. I felt strong the whole game, even in the last two innings."

Ortíz walked 2 and struck out 6 in the 8-0 victory.

In 12 starts this year Ortíz has recorded a 3-4 record and a 4.36 ERA.

Béltre on a Rampage, Hits for Cycle
Wednesday, June 2nd, 1976: You don't get to see a player hit a single, double, triple and home run in the same game very often, but when it happens, it is special moment. Júlio Béltre of the Grocers enjoyed that moment today, going 5 for 5 and hitting for the cycle against the Wolverines. While the Portland third baseman had great success today at the plate, his team wasn't as fortunate. The Grocers lost the contest by a 13-8 score.

"I didn't even realize I accomplished the feat until my teammates pointed it out," said a smiling Béltre.

For his historic day Béltre had 5 hits in 5 at-bats with 5 RBI and 2 runs scored. Not a bad day's work. He'll get his name in the league record book, too.

J. Béltre tripled in the 2nd, hit a three-run home run off K. Maeda in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 6th and hit an RBI double in the 8th.

This season Béltre has hit at a .249 clip with 24 RBIs, 7 home runs and 21 runs scored. He has played in 47 games.

Ángel Reyes Gets 200th Victory
Monday, June 7th, 1976: His goal at twenty was to win twenty games one year, pitch until he was thirty, win the league pennant and to make some money. Well, Ángel Reyes did something even better -- the 35-year-old Mexico City Aztecs star has now won 200 games in his career. That put him in a very select group of pitchers.

He joined that exclusive club today at Estadio Azteca by whipping the Washington Freedom 4-0, holding them to 4 hits in 9 innings while chalking up 6 strikeouts and no walks.

In the postgame interview, the modest Reyes said, "It's special to win 200 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back."

In his lifetime, the 35-year-old Reyes has won 200 and lost 196, piling up 2588 strikeouts and 856 walks in 3414.1 innings with a 5.02 ERA. Opponents have hit .280 against him.
