Head Coach 09: The Stanford Savior

Backstory: My last dyansty I didn't like. I was not used to the idea of a totally alternate universe where the last draft was all fixed and once I got used to it, I didn't like what I had done. Therefore I am doing a new dynasty for the time being, focused on the normal events that happened with the draft.

With that said, I simmed year one with the Lions, to a 2-14 record. Obviously I was lucky to be retained, and this dynasty starts in the off-season.

At this point I have a new GM, a new OC (Lane Kiffin), a new DC (Chuck Bedinark) and the #1 pick in the draft.

There will be spoilers, so keep that in mind as I go along.

It's that time again, where Lions fans have their only hope of the year: the off-season. This time it's different though. This time their is light at the end of the tunnel. This time their is QB Jack English from Stanford.

This time .. it's a can't miss.

We have cap room this year, almost 60 million dollars worth. We know English is our #1 pick, but we need to give him help. Our goal is to totally retool our offense if we can, and help plug in some spots on D.

Easier said then done.

RG Stephen Neal (88 OV) signs a 9.5 million dollar deal, with 2.5 garaunteed to start our spending.

SS Donovan Darius (85 OV) signs a 1 year, 4.6 million dollar deal with 1.5 in garaunteed money.

RT Kyle Turley (84 OV) signs a 1 year, 3.3 million dollar deal with 1 mil up front in garaunteed cash.

C Brad Meester (82 OV) signed a 1 year, 2 million dollar deal with 500K up front.

Those end up being our biggest moves as we head to the draft with our date with destiny.

2009 NFL Draft

It takes all of two seconds to make English our pick. When his NFL comparison is Peyton Manning, you know you have a keeper. The only problem with English is he has to start asap.

In the second round we take a TE out of Washington State, Nej Conley. He looks like a complete package at TE, and with our lack of talent there we hope he starts right away.

We take KSU LOLB Tay Conway in the third round. Another guy we like a lot. Again, we have depth all over, so he will see the field.

We deal up back into the third round to take Maryland RB Trevor Brown. It cost us our fourth and fifth round picks but he seems worth it. Our RB situation is not that great.

We go best available in the sxith, and it happens to be RB Tarik Warren of Georgetown. He could be a steal.

Our final pick is MLB Brandon Reed from Grambling. Seemed worth a feeler.

Pre-season report

The Lions went 1-3 in the 2009 pre-season but the offense looked solid, especially QB Jack English who completed 65% of his passes.

The team also may've found a gem in RB Tarik Warren who ran for over 200 yards in four games. While he looked good, he won't start, as Kevin Smith is currently the #1 back, with the rookies Brown and Warren backing up.

There were no big cuts made, and no huge injuries.

In fact the only disapointment is TE Naj Conley seems more like a decent player rather then a superstar many hoped.

Week 1 vs Green Bay Pregame Notes

Nothing to report as far as inactives, your run of the mill guys you don't expect much from are not playing.

The gameplan is simple today: make their QB's day miserable, and on offense, limit mistakes. English is a rookie, yes, but he is the man and we expect a big game from him in his first start.

Week 1 vs Green Bay

First quarter

Green Bay opens up with the ball and their QB Aaron Brooks (Yes .. I know) completes a few short passes, before Ryan Grant reels off a 24 yard run to get the ball in our territory. Thankfully, it is Aaron Brooks, and he proceeds to throw a pick six to MLB Jordan Dizon to put Detroit up 7-0 early!

The Packers have the ball again after the Pick 6, and decide to rely on Grant. The results seem to be paying off as Grant rusn them right down the field, taking 6 carries for 55 yards to our 17. A Brooks pass to James Jones gives the Pack a 1st and goal at the 6. With our backs against the wall, the D shows up big, as Victor Abimari sacks Brooks, Brian Kelly stops Grant for a 3 yard loss and Dizon stops Jennings at the 3 forcing the FG. 7-3 Detroit.

The Jack English of Lions football opens with a 7 yard Kevin Smith rush. On second down, Smith picks up 7 more on second down, and the chains start moving. Riding the hot hand, Smith gets another carry for 3 yards on first down. On 3rd and 9, English makes his first NFL pass attempt hitting WR Domenik Hixon over the middle for 18 big yards to end the first!

2nd Quarter

Two Kevin Smith runs only pick up 3 yards, so we call pass again on third down. Calvin Johnson drops a sure first down pass, though we have a hold on the play anyway. Nick Harris comes out to punt, sending it out of the endzone for a touchback.

The Packers go 3 and out, and we start out at our 34 after the punt. A PI call gives us a first down at our 42, and then English hits Calvin for 8 yards to the 50. On 2nd and 2, Kevin Smith picks up 10 tough yards to put us in Pack territory. Sadly we decide to test our luck deep, and English is picked off by Charles Woodson, who returns it 75 yards for a TD to put GB up 10-7.

After three big Kevin Smith runs, English hits Calvin Johnson for a 12 yard pass to put us back in GB territory at their 46, but again we push our luck and English throws in double coverage for his 2nd pick of the quarter.

GB marches down the field, but again we hold firm, limiting them to 3 to make it 13-7 with 1:40 to go in the half.

We decide to let English try the 2 minute offense, with 2 TO, and 80 yards of field to cover. Two passes later we're in GB territory at the 46. With 13 seconds to go in the half, we get down to the 7, with no timeouts. We throw caution to the wind and go for it. English drops back and hits WR Gary Knight in the endzone for his first career TD pass and to give us the lead! 14-13

HALFTIME SCORE
Lions 14
Packer 13

3rd Quarter

We go back to the run game to start the half, and watch Kevin Smith pick up 14 yards on 3 carries. The drive winds up stalling and we're forced to punt from our 31.

A 21 yard Ryan Grant run be damned, we again shut down the Packers and force them to punt. Of course with the ball back we go 3 and out and once again it's GB ball.

It looked bleak when GB got the ball back but thankfully our D held tough, and with GB in FG range, we got a huge sack from Andre Fluellen to force a punt.

With the ball back, English hits Roy Williams for 11 yards and the first down, taking us to the end of the quarter. Lions 14-13.

4th Quarter

Faced with a 3rd and 3 on our 40 to start the quarter, we take a shot with the PA Pass, but AJ Hawk makes a nice pass breakup to force a punt.

The Packers march down the field on a mix of Grant runs and Brook PA Passes, before Grant rumbles in for a 4 yard TD. Thankfully Fluellen sacks Brooks on the 2 pt try to keep it 19-14 Packers.

With 8 minutes to go, we run first down to no avail. Then on 2nd down English exploits a blown coverage, hitting Calvin Johnson for 30 yards to the 50. An Aaron Kampman sack makes it 2nd and 14 but English hits Roy for 12 yards to make it 3rd and 2. Then Kevin Smith rumbles outside for 15 yards, and follows it up with a run up the middle for 14 to put us at GB's 13.

Smith is bottled up for 2 on first down, but fights for 4 more on 2nd down to make it 3rd and 4 from the 7. On a big 3rd down, English hits Roy to put as at the 2 with a 1st and goal. We hand it to Kevi Smith who rumbles in for six! English is picked off in the endzone going for 2, so we're up 20-19 with 3:39 to play.

Greg Jennings gives GB life on the kick taking the ball to the Pack 44. Two plays later and the Pack are at the Lion 42. We get two big sacks, one from Abimari and one from Sims to set up 3rd and 13, but Brooks hits Jennings over the middle to our 28.

Thankfully Dwayne White stops Grant on a toss play for a 6 yard loss, and Brooks throws incomplete on 2nd down. We stop Grant on 3rd down and with 4th and 15 looming, the Pack bring out Crosby for a 50 yard FG try, which he nails. GB 22-20.

We have 1:30 left, and 2 TO to make something happen, and we start on our 20 yard line.

Play 1: Pass to Roy for 9 yards
Play 2: Pass to Calvin for 32 yards
Play 3: Incomplete
Play 4: 2 yard pass to Calvin
Play 5: Incomplete
Play 6: Fourth down - Incomplete

And with that the game is over.

Final Score

Green Bay 22
Detroit 20

Jack English goes 18/32 for 221 yards, 1 TD - 2 INT
Kevin Smith runs 24 times for 93 yards, 1 TD
Calvin Johnson catches 7 balls for 91 yards
Ernie Sims has 13 tackles, 2 TFL, sack
