Rubik's cube
Idea for poll came from speedcubing thread. Rubik's Revenge was a bitch, but I solved it once. On the second attempt to solve it, I got so frustrated that I smashed it on the floor....

I solved the cube once...pretty much by accident. Not sure what Rubik's Revenge is.

Rubik's cube is 3x3. Rubik's Revenge is the same idea, but 4x4.

Oh, right. I seem to remember seeing the Revenge, but I don't think I ever played with it. I have always been interested in reading the math behind solving the cube, but I have never worked up the energy to actually tackle it. One of those things on my list to do before I die.

Once you learned the method, you could do it over and over.

Define "solved."
I solved both the help of a book. I memorized the solution to the Rubik's cube and eventually got to the point where I could solve it in about 90 seconds. Can't imagine getting down to 11 seconds or "only" under 30 seconds. I did solve the Rubik's Snake on my own. Does any remember another star-shaped cube? I can't remember what it was called or if it was even a Rubik brand or some knock off. That thing was a bitch. Last edited by kcchief19 : 01-17-2006 at 12:48 PM. |

I was about the same as kc... got a book, figured it out, could do it in about 2 minutes...then lost interest. I still have two of them within eyesight of my basement computer, on my rather vast games cabinet shelving.

Surely that occurred in less than 11.3 seconds. You should have that world record all to yourself.

More than twenty turns and you're risking a sprained thumb?

Pyramix was pyramid shaped. It was extremely easy. I could literally solve it in 2 minutes or less every time. I do remember some sort of 3-D star-shaped thing, but can't remember what it was called. I was really into puzzles back when I was a kid, so I spent a lot of time on these things. There was also Rubik's links (don't remember the name) where you had to arrange beads in track in a certain order. I suspect my method for the cube was different than in the Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube. My method was to get all of the corners first, and then go from there. I never really developped a reliable method to get the corners, so that would often take a while. Once I had the corners, it was usually quick going from there. What method did the book suggest? I've always been curious, but never took the time to go find the book. Last edited by Kodos : 01-17-2006 at 02:00 PM. |

My cube was loose from all the times I had taken it apart to reset it.

I finally solved this one today. It was a real bear. Really hard to fix one thing without messing something else up. Last edited by Kodos : 05-31-2024 at 06:15 PM. |
