Good job, "Santa"...

This deserves it's own thread and not to be lost in the random thoughts one.

Mighty dusty in my office right now.

Sounds like the Santa story might have been a hoax.

Why? Because the man in question wont tell the families name and location for other media members to harass a grieving family?

Because no hospitals in the area have a record of it?

Do they not have a record of it, or are they keeping it quiet at the request of the families?

This seems like a really petty thing to try and snopes.

I'm not even sure I follow the logic.
A dear friend of ours is in ICU currently. I visited this past weekend.
There is no official log I visited them. Call every hospital in Charlotte and ask if CU Tiger visited...none will say yes.
None will tell you if they had a child die in ICU either....Hippa laws and such

The aren't saying it didn't happen, they are just saying the story is unconfirmed.

As for it being petty, I'd point to this from the Snopes page:

Quote:
In this way, this particular Santa tale serves an instructive purpose: it shows how an unvetted story can spread regardless of how true it might be, with each news outlet repeating it making it seem that much closer to the truth until it is, at last, uncritically reported as fact.

Yeah, I saw this as more of an example of how quickly things spread that we want to be true, with no regard for whether they are true or not.

FWIW, I didn't go looking for this. It showed up on Facebook because I liked Snopes there.

The Charlotte news ran an interview with the dude the other night...Im assuming first conducted by Knoxville affiliates...if he made it up Id think he would want to keep it kinda quieter and not blast his full name to the world....then again most who would do this sort of thing would decline the interview request so....who knows.

This story is probably a good litmus test for cynical assholes, because when I read the story the part that most sticks out to me is the mom crying "No! Not now!" as her kid died in the arms of a stranger neither one of them had met before (and who immediately ran away afterwards?). The implicit suggestion that the kid (and his family, and we readers) was best served by dying in the hands of a mall Santa, talking about toys, leaves me feeling kind of gross.

I was saying Snopes was being petty, not you. I really don't get why they would even investigate something like this.

A massive +1 to this. Just didn't seem that believable to me. But I am absolutely a cynical asshole and I know it.

Isn't that their stock-in-trade? People send them in things they have questions about whether they are authentic or not, and they then do a bit of research and report on what they found?
