CT & Jivin would be happy.

That's awesome. We should be doing more stuff that has a high rate of death for the few people involved but could significantly advance the species. The idea that we made it to the moon and back with less computing power than a smart phone but a mission to Mars would be too dangerous says more about our fear of liability as a culture than anything else.

(I also fully support more deep sea exploration, but you can count me out personally because the oceans terrify me.)

It'll be like Australia, but in space!

I imagine the first hours on Mars would be pretty fantastic, just for the "holy fuck I'm on Mars!!!!!" feeling. But what do you do for the rest of your lifetime. It would take 3 years before another shuttle could arrive with resupplies and/or people. I imagine it would be a lot of facebook and a lot of sex, or if not sex then a lot of rape.

I think this is more reality show concept than actual feasible space exploration.

Can't remember the title, but I read a story once about space colonization that ended up being a disaster because of the mental-makeup of the type of people who would volunteer for a one-way/near-certain-death trip like that.

Given the experiences of female friends I've known who have roomed with other female friends over the years in cramped apartments, it would probably seem pretty awesome for the guy up until about 5 minutes after launch......

Haha, actually I'm a hotel GM with just a 55 year old maintenance guy and a new hire amongst around 20 females, so after thinking about what I go through on a daily basis I would like to rescind that comment.

I thought this whole thing was just a reality show with a fantasy theme, but it looks like it's actually just a scam.

Mars One Is Broke, Disorganized, and Sketchy as Hell

"You get points for getting through each round of the selection process (but just an arbitrary number of points, not anything to do with ranking), and then the only way to get more points is to buy merchandise from Mars One or to donate money to them...."

And the TV production company that was to produce the reality show pulled out. So it's not even that anymore.
