Words or phrases that immediately make you stop listening to or reading something

"The Deep State"

There are some financial guys who like to throw that term out in their writings. It's a great way to get me to totally discount whatever you're saying. They usually seem to be gold/precious metals guys.

White knighting.
Virtue signalling

These are used by someone who wants to avoid actually debating the issue at hand and/or pretend that they aren't racist/misogynist/homophobi, but just "concerned" about the overreaction to what people say.

It was a term with a narrow and useful meaning to describe a very specific form of reality manipulation.

Now, people just use it to make their disagreements with others sound more dramatic.

Close-minded phrases like this are what does it for me. Similarly, 'there's no reason to believe X', assumption of motives and character assassination phraseology, etc. .

Good, because that's exactly the reason I despise those phrases. My opinion doesn't matter. I must be an SJW or I just want to virtue signal. It has absolutely nothing to do with the content of my argument.

"Think about it" is usually followed by an incredibly specious argument

"It's common sense" tells me you don't have an argument or any evidence to support your position, and for good measure, you're going to imply I'm an idiot for not just agreeing with you.

On message boards, "would of", "should of", or "could of" are 100% deal breakers. Odds are I'll never take that person's arguments seriously again.

That and the the "boomers"/"millennials" stuff makes me look away and stop listening. In a time where we're trying to stop racism and equalize the rights of men and women, starting a whole new level of separation based on another aspect of life we have no control over just isn't something we need.

There's probably quite a few. The first one that came to mind was "white privilege"

Dola,

"Living wage." Minimum wage jobs were once primarily supplemental income for high school or college students. Now, apparently it's some moral societal obligation to pay the cashier at Burger King enough to support a family.

"Minimum wage jobs are for high school or college students"

So you clearly appear to be arguing for legislation that only students under 21 should be paid minimum wage? "No, God no! I'm simply saying we should deny the existence of those other poor people."

Some have been mentioned before: SJW, Cancel Culture, Virtue Signaling.

One time at a bar someone thought it was a good idea to drop "You aren't some libtard are you". Yeah.. that shut down that conversation fast.

Re: minimum wage. When Franklin Roosevelt pushed for the first federal minimum wage law in 1933 he said the following:

Quote:
It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country.

So the whole minimum wage was intended for high school and college students is quite simply a lie.

Good one.

It isn't quite a specific phrase, but when someone attempts to solve a complex problem that has resisted easy solutions for generations by making a simple analogy:

"Here's the thing with peace in the Middle East. Imagine that you have two neighbors, Bob and Jim, and they don't like each other . . . "

SJW - This tells me you really have no interest in the topic, you just want to try and negate anything that person has said or done by using SJW as a pejorative.

Identity Politics - Dog whistle by racists and people that are ok with discrimination and don't really want to acknowledge the problem or they are totally fine with the problems those people deal with on a day to day basis.

Not a true/real 'X' - No true scotsman falacy

Last but not least: Then vs Than. get it right people!!!

This thread is showing that if you are writing something from the Left or the Right and are actually trying to persuade folks (as opposed to just getting praise from people who already agree with you), there are a lot of terms to avoid.
