Survivor 30: Worlds Apart

Pretty incredible run for this show and it just keeps on going with no sign of it slowing down. Season 30 starts tonight with the premise of White Collar vs. Blue Collar vs. No Collar.

My older daughter is now eight and is getting to the level where she does a great job of following all the strategic moves. My younger daughter is five and she loves just rooting for a tribe color. Either way, it's fun that we all can enjoy the show as a family. Excited about the premiere tonight.

yeah, my kids (10 and 13) love the show. We're relatively new to Survivor. I started watching a few years ago, roped my wife in and now the kids watch it too. Really fun family show.

I'm not sure whether that was planned beforehand or not, but So was awful at tribal council. You never call out your alliance like that. I was shocked that Carolyn didn't play her idol, but it proved to be a good move.

My daughters and I used to have Survivor night, starting in Season 1. My oldest was 8, and my youngest was 3, and the youngest didn't really get it for a few seasons until she got older. We would usually have fish and rice for dinner that night, and I would let them eat with their hands to emulate the survivors. They liked that when they were little, but preferred silverware as they got older. We would always pick a player on the first night, and whoever's player went the farthest got to pick a restaurant for dinner at the end of the season.

Now they're both moved away and in another city for college/work. I miss family Survivor night.

That sounds fun, I may start doing that. Crazy when you put it into that perspective.

I like the law student on the no collar tribe the best.

We were shocked she didn't play her idol. I don't know how much trust you can build that soon to know she was safe, but she felt confident enough, and it turned out to be smart.

Going in, I thought I would like the blue collar the best, and I thought the no collar and white collar would annoy me to no end. Turns out I was backwards on that. The feather head guy is the only annoying one so far on no collar, and I only like the guy that ate the scorpion on the blue tribe at this point. The white collar hasn't been too bad except the guy that got the idol clue.

Should be a fun season. I like the class warfare element. It's funny how as soon as that was announced, all the players started actively trying to live up to the stereotypes.

Holy crap was that a bit creepy. Dude, you just met this chick and had a conversation with her, now you are freaking out because she talked to some other guy. Then the hug, give it a rest loverboy.

First impression was a letdown as everyone is just playing up the stereotypes and the douchiness was pretty off the charts.

I loved the different choices during the challenge. That was really cool.

Feather guy is Gary Glitter level of creepy. He's got to be on a sex offender list somewhere

I think the talent agency guy has a good shot.

I just don't see Will's move as being a good decision. He's now #4 in a three-person alliance and is one of the weakest players in challenges on his team.

He could have been safe with a three person alliance in their tribe til at least the first merge.

I think I'd be happier as #4 with 3 strong players than being in a 3-person alliance with a deaf old woman and a sex offender though. You just have to hope you don't lose 2 of the next 3 challenges, then there will likely be some sort of switch anyway.

The guy he voted out looked like he was a strong player though. If he just stuck with the 4 person alliance and did as they planned with a split vote he would be in better shape than what he did. He basically turned his back on the potential 3 person alliance AND went rogue on the 4 person alliance.

Yeah, but suppose they lose another challenge- I think he would be on the block over Vince, even if Vince is a creep. I don't think they pitch him over Nina.

Just got caught up. Two thoughts on the last episode:

- As always, the gimmick that the whole season is based on lasts just a few episodes before they scramble the tribes. I really wish they'd let them go a while longer -- it just feels so random to mix everything up after only a few days.

- Jeff's complete and total no-sell of Max's immunity idol fakeout was the highlight of the season so far.

Isn't it funny how the teams were shuffled up? Pretty much all the alpha players on one side, and the rejects on the other. That reject team won't win ANYTHING.

I think they should allow them to pick the tribes. Randomly pick one person for each new tribe and which picks first. They pick a player but it can't be from their original tribe. Then the players that were picked pick a player (same rule of not picking a player from your tribe unless it gets down to that is all that is left) and so forth until the two tribes are picked.

To make it more interesting, do not allow them to talk about their selections as they go (so alliances can't direct the selections).

and it was such a solid gimmick too. All three tribes were interesting and did a marvelous job following their stereotypical tribe credo (or at least giving enough soundbytes to allow the producers to edit the shows as such).

however, the switch did force a bit more gameplay on everyone which is always a good thing.

I've enjoyed this season. Lots of really interesting characters. Almost everyone has a clear and unique identity, which hasn't always been the case in recent years.

You're never going to convince me that the tribe shakeups aren't done on the fly by the producers to get better mixes. No way you plan a shakeup that's only going to last two episodes.

Then again, I assume there's plenty of "soft fix" stuff like that going on every season, especially with stuff like which challenges come when.

Like in the men versus women season when the men were winning and suddenly the challenges were all balance related.

Yeah, exactly. That was the classic example.

Even some of the challenges themselves would be easy enough to rig. Look at all the "untie the knots" stuff they've been doing the last few years. If you need to create a little adversity on one tribe, just tighten those knots up a little bit. Nobody would be able to tell.

man, seeing Vanilla Ice (aka Rodney) face run the gamut from "smug asshole" to "wait, how does that math work" to "no, really, this math is hard" to "woah, bro, wtf" is about as good as it gets

I actually think that he believe what he was saying in tonight's show, that he was just playing the other side and that his shorts weren't getting damp every time he talked to Juaquin (sp?).

As much as I dislike Rodney I am enjoying his sports references.

Great play by Jenn, though it knocked out Kelly who I had in our Survivor pool. I'm rooting for Jenn too - great personality and some grade A knockers.

Once the idol had to be played before the votes were read I really only remember this time and the Malcolm idol as the only memorable hidden idol moments (though I really wish he hadn't declared who they were voting for).
