So before these games, I never would have predicted the Giants and Jets get their first wins of the season against the Saints and Titans, nor both going into OT, nor the Giants with over 400 yards passing or Jets with 7 sacks. Crazy game sometimes.

Word is it's not season-ending. They refused to show the replay, because it was "gruesome". But early rumors is an MCL sprain.

Saints/Giants was definitely a "may the worst team lose" game. And the worst team did.

Between Roethlisberger and Rodgers, I can’t imagine there has ever been a game with more TV shots of head shaking, disgusted quarterbacks. If you were to take a drink every time they show one of them rolling their eyes over calls, lack of protection, getting hit, or missing receivers, you’d be in the emergency room.

TV and streaming are worth so much that an NFL owner doesn't really have to care about drawing fans.

I didn't watch the game, Thomkal. Are the Cards for real? They beat 'em by 17, so that feels pretty real to me, but sometimes scores can be deciving.

Given that Murray had never beaten the Rams until today and were on a 8 game losing streak against them, I'd say that feels pretty real to me too. At least until next week where they do something that doesn't make me feel that way

As a Bengals fan, I completely understand. Mike Brown is immune to criticism because he'll make money no matter what he does.

Normally I would watch SNF but this week I don't care about a matchup about inflating balls vs filming the inflating balls.

Cheap in retrospect, but if you believe that the true angles in sports betting lie in narratives, rather than math, then -- the Rams suffering a letdown after obviously pushing all in to beat the Bucs last week seemed like a very strong play. I weighted my ARZ pick heavily in a confidence pool based on that, but I'm not a "put money on the game" sort of guy, really, so didn't hit the money line or whatever would have made sense.

Why would TB try for a TD that would put them up 6 with 2 minutes to go rather than work clock? Not just once, but twice. I don't get it.

Well it's not like they had any chance of getting the crowd when the Raiders are in town. One of the very few times when a team that leaves a city remains popular in that city.

A bit surprising that so many of their fans have stayed loyal with all of the dicking around in the 80s and the recent lack of success.

It doesn't matter who they play, they are always outnumbered. Literally no one in LA cares about them and the fans in SD are scorned and aren't coming to the games.

He clearly does not want to be there.

He's clearly not going to succeed at the NFL level.

But, man, firing a coach (or "mutually parting ways") after 4 games is some Mickey Mouse shit. Makes the Jags look really cartoonish.

I guess Meyer and/or the Jags can fall back on health or family issues. I just don't see him walking away or the Jags firing him any time soon. I don't think his ego or bank account will let him walk this year. He will hang on until at least next year to match what Saban did with the Dolphins.

Having met and interacted with Meyer at a coaching clinic once, I can tell you I have never met a coach more arrogant at any level and in this profession, where you need ego to be successful, that is saying a lot.

I truly believe he is so enveloped in his own hype that he thinks he is above reproach on things like this. He is really a toxic individual whose time in the game has passed, which of course means USC will probably hire him when he is shown the door in Jax.

I get why Coach UM's wife would be mad at him.

I think it's one of two things (or both).

1) Not taking the flight home seems like a big no-no in NFL circles, especially for an 0-4 team that could use a lot of work. And if you're doing it to "spend time with your grandkids" and end up trying to pick up college chicks at a bar, it looks worse. Plus he canceled activities on Monday to avoid the team.

2) The Jaguars realize they made a horrible mistake and are trying to force him out. It seems clear the leak to Lombardi came from someone in the Jaguars front office. And it's also clear Urban was not ready for the big leagues.

It still all boils down to winning. If the Jaguars are 4-0, this isn't a story and Urban is treated as a sly dog getting himself into trouble. We'd chuckle and move on.

I should add that the Jaguars ownership had to know this is who Urban was. His "health" issues at Florida seemed to coincide with rumors of him getting drunk and sleeping around.

Which ain't exactly unheard of at the college level

(not excusing it, simply saying that you probably almost anticipate it if the college HC is within a certain age range at this point)

My one year working at a big law firm, I worked on a matter where Big Company A (our client) was adverse to Big Company B. And one of the partners told me that Company B was in a position to acquire Company A soon, and a lot of what we were doing was determining the ultimate share price.

This feels similar. The Jags and Meyer are going to split up. And all this drams seems like a roundabout way of determining the ultimate buyout price.

was always a poor hire. They actually had an appealing job with #1 and Lawrence incoming and they could have gotten somebody good. We will see if the job has the same appeal for next year (will likely depend on how Lawrence develops over the season).

Every so often a bad owner will get suckered into hiring a successful college coach and watch them flame out when they don't have the superior talent advantage they had in college. There's a big jump between college and the NFL.

I don't know, based on some of the other stuff in Urban's past, I am not sure why this would be the thing for his wife to get mad at him about.

As long as Urban or his wife were not passing judgement and/or dishing out their morality on the players, I don't think the players would give a damn. Honestly, I don't think they give a damn either way tbh. He just needs to be prepared to hear about it if and when he questioned the judgment of the players.

Oh I don't believe that either. They've been pissy from day one, ever since they realized he wasn't some halfwit that kisses their asses constantly.

And I don't even particularly LIKE Meyer myself, but this is all about him not caring to let the inmates run the asylum.

Wait, wasn't the asylum just run by Tom Coughlin and Doug Marrone? Tom Coughlin and Doug Marrone were kissing the players' asses too much so they replaced them with tough guy disciplinarian Urban Meyer? The guy who reportedly had the "Circle of Trust" at Florida?

I don't claim much deep expertise in NFL contract clauses, etc... but the releases this week of Jaylon Smith and Stephon Gilmore both seemed really odd. I have gathered that Smith had a guaranteed-for-injury clause next season that motivated the release now (to avoid the team ending up eating his fat contract for an injured or still underperforming player) ... but Gilmore seemed like an obvious case of "well, we can't work out a long term deal so just play out this season and we'll part ways." Is NE throwing in the towel on this season, or do we think this is a sort of head-on-a-pike message-sending thing?

The Smith thing makes sense the way you describe it.

I wonder if Gilmore has lost a step post-injury, and the team told him he'd not start and he said "cut me if I'm not starting"

I think Gilmore's basically just holding out. He's not going to play this year under his contract (at least for the Patriots under these circumstances), so announcing he'll be released today at 4PM is the Patriots' last-ditch effort to "smoke out" any trade offers before then.

I highly recommend his film "breakdowns" and despite this being satire, I can tell you this is not that far off of how some film sessions are.
