NFL Week 6-Revised Bounty Suspensions.

Yeah, many more weeks of discussion about the tragic injustice that has been hoisted upon Jonathan Vilma

Sources -- Roger Goodell upholds suspensions of Jonathan Vilma, Will Smith - ESPN

Quote:
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has reduced the bounty-related suspensions of two New Orleans Saints players while upholding the punishments of two others, a source told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.

Linebacker Scott Fujita's three-game suspension has been reduced to one while defensive end Anthony Hargrove's eight-game penalty has been trimmed to seven games, the source said.

The suspensions of linebacker Jonathan Vilma and defensive end Will Smith will remain the same, the source added.

Vilma is on the Saints physically unable to perform list and will not be eligible to play this year but can keep the money he has been paid for six weeks on the PUP list, a source told ESPN's Ed Werder.

The four players have 72 hours to appeal Goodell's latest ruling. Should they choose to do that, the understanding is that they would be allowed to play until the appeal process is completed, a source told Werder.

Goodell appoints the person who will hear the appeal and last time chose to do so himself. He is scheduled to formally announce his redeterminations involving the punished Saints players Tuesday afternoon.

The players had been suspended as a result of a bounty pool that league investigators have said the Saints ran for three seasons from 2009-11, but the bans had been vacated on technical, jurisdictional grounds by an appeal panel operating within the NFL's collective bargaining agreement. That decision had led to the re-instatement of the four players and has forced Goodell to begin the disciplinary process for the players over again.

In addition to fighting their previous suspensions through procedures called for by the NFL's labor agreement, the four players have also sued in federal court in New Orleans. Vilma has his own attorneys, while the NFL Players Association has represented the other three. Only Vilma has sued for defamation. The other federal claims, made by all four players, generally state that Goodell violated labor law by failing to act as an impartial arbitrator. They also ask the judge to bar the commissioner from punishing the players in the bounty matter.

Steelers and Titans on Thursday night. It would be great to see the Steelers take a poor Titans squad to the woodshed.

Forgot to include the mocking air quotes around tragic injustice.

Fuck Vilma and the Saints.

While I agree these players got off easier than they should have, Goodell wields far too much power.

Not sure how Goodell has too much power. The union and owners deemed him the sole arbiter of punishment. Vilma finds a sympathetic court who define conditions and authority. Then Goodell reaffirms using different language. I think it's fine how it works. Slapping 10k in cash on a table to encourage injuries is pretty low.

Don't the other sports leave discipline to single individuals? Not sure who handles appeals, but it's not like discipline is overturned very often.

Donald Brown had his knee scoped and is out 2-3 weeks.

Funny part is that I got an email from my brother on our fantasy football email chain about this a couple hours ago before anything broke. One of those "I work with a guy who knows a guy who is friends with a girl who is like a sister to Donald Brown..."

So what are the chances of the NFL banning all blocking below the waist?

The color commentator on the NFL-owned network actually uttered the words "Dude, that's a great throw!" a few minutes ago.

You mean the league that doesn't allow you dive at a QB below the waist, but has said you can do that to a defensive player, as long as you don't start from too far away before taking out a knee?

I miss the good ol' days, when the Steelers had defensive players that made plays to shut down those last ditch drives. Carnell Lake, Woodson, and young Troy P. used to almost always come up with a turnover or a big play that shut down last minute drives.

Right, because 54 is so routine

If Ben runs for the three or four yards he could have easily got, the kick would have been good

54 is rapidly becoming a chip shot.

They should have gone for it or punted and gone for OT. Suisham doesn't have that kind of leg.

He's 9-9 before that kick. Tomlin has to reconsider that kick. The miss gives Tennessee the ball at midfield.

The only thing I'm surprised by was Tennessee didn't just throw passes deep down the sideline to get another two DPI calls and put them inside the 20.

I do agree Tomlin shouldn't have kicked it from 54, but if your kickers range is around 50, and you have the chance to run for 4-5 yards to get him inside that range, you have to know that.

But they have the media on their side now so no big deal made about it.

However, Goodell will soon have the ability and pool of backups to replace guys who aren't calling things right.

NFL Redzone channel to the rescue.

I'd love...LOVE to see the 49ers just pummel the Giants today. Something like 42-10. Just complete domination in every phase of the game, not unlike the 49ers last two games.

Then I'd like to see Gillbride blame the loss on Justin Smith holding onto his O-linemen, or something else equally minuscule.

My beloved Cards take on the Bills at home today. Cards have no offensive line-sacked 17 times in last two games. They have no running game-#1 Beanie Wells is on the Injured Reserve/Can Return list until late Nov. #2 Ryan Williams is now on Injured Reserve.

Bills got absolutely stomped in their last two and a half games. I predict Arizona wins in the desert 56-40.

I'm torn on starting Alex Smith or Kevin Kolb. Do you really think Kolb is going to light up the Bills secondary like that? I'm especially cautious with him because of that paper-mache O-line.

Haha. I can see it if it was for 50 million or something but for 10K, lol.... Tightasses.

3 yards shy of the NFL record for 10k.

Tough week for the Niners kicks off today as they begin their portion of the two games in five days part of the schedule.

I expect today's game to come down to the final two minutes.

I know he was written off as a bust after the 2nd quarter of the first game, but Tannehill might be okay as a starter for the Dolphins.

The only thing Kolb will be able to do is throw the ball-no line to protect him and no line to make holes for whatever running back they use. I'd probably still go with Smith cause he's at home and out for revenge against the Giants.
