FOFC's Favourite Movie - The Tournament

It felt like it was time do go a good tournament and as part of procrastinating about stuff I actually need to get done, I figured I'd get this going. I'm not sure what the time frame will be on this tournament. Hopefully I don't drag it out too long. I'll probably leave each poll open for a few days.

The poll is for your favourite (or favorite) movie, whatever that means to you. If you didn't see a movie and whether you have even heard of it or not, vote or don't vote for it, doesn't really matter to me.

The bracket was made up of the IMDB Top 250 Movies and rounded out by Rolling Stone magazines Readers Poll of the top 25 cult movies. As there were six spots to be filled, the top cult movies that were not already in the Top 250 qualified. I'll get the bracket done up and posted at some point.

I played around with brackets based on eras and genres but really thought that the older eras just might not have the interest. So the seedings are straight 1-256 based on the IMDB rank as of today.

So without further ado, we begin.

Sounds fun. I ended up voting in less than half of the brackets.

Is this a straight vote, or does it go to the electoral college?

I would have preferred the BoxOfficeMojo adjusted domestic gross list.

Surprised that Jurassic Park isn't totally kicking Apocalypse Now's ass. Different genre interests have an effect on that I guess?

Brutal draw for Infernal Affairs. I loved that movie.

Completely different movies for sure.

I voted Apocalypse Now. Just a fantastic movie.

Never saw it but always wanted to. Seeing as how it was remade as The Departed, it's interesting that it got matched up with (one of) Scorsese's other big mafia movie(s) in the opening round.

FYI, this an entire sixteen team movie bracket, so Cuckoo's Nest and Casino are poised to meet up in the next round, etc. and could have a finals matchup like Casino vs Goodfellas.

The winner of the bracket advances to the Sweet 16.

And here's a link to the entire bracket for those that want spoilers but there are a few slugfests yet to come in the opening round.

Question, would people prefer all of a round posted at once for a longer period to vote or a new set of matchups every few days, which obviously drags the tournament out longer?

Casino isn't even top 10 Scorsese, much less better than the amazing All About Eve. And I love Spielberg (and like Jurassic Park), but it's not even close to the same level as Apocalypse Now.

Drag it out longer. Easier to discuss small amounts of movies in each thread.

I went with Jurassic Park in the Park/Apocalypse battle, even though I like both movies.. The special effects in Jurassic Park still look better than modern films and its been 25 years almost. That, to me, makes it better. It was such an incredible feat. Without that, Apocalypse now wins for story.. But I think Jurassic Park might be the best film ever for me if I based it solely on special effects. Also with Apocalypse, I think there are so many good war movies that the saturation sort of drops it a little for me.

Loved both films, tough draw this early in the bracket.

The Appocalypse Now/Jurassic Park battle is tough for a lot of reasons.

Objectivly, I think Apocalypse Now is the better move. Better story. Unbelievable cinematography. A cast full of legends.

All that said, there is the joyous wonder of seeing those dinosaurs for the first time. There is also this: If I decide to watch a movie on a Saturday night, 8 times out of 10, I'm picking Jurassic Park over Apocalypse Now. Apocalypse Now is an incredibly uncomfortable movie experience to watch. That is part of the brilliance of it. But it makes it one where you don't want to repeat it a lot.

The definition of "better" here is going to be very, very different for each user. I'm not shocked at all this is close. If anything, I'm surprised that the dinosaurs aren't beating the hell out of Vietnam.
