Predict now: Where will Shanahan, Cowher, Gruden and Holmgren coach next year?

Thought it might be fun to get some predictions for where the big name coaches who are out of football right now might land in 2010 (if anywhere).

Cowher in Carolina (John Fox will be the fall guy for a mismanaged team and the absurdly large contract given to an over the hill Jake Delhomme)

Shanahan in Dallas (Wade Phillips is a tool, of Jerry Jones that is)

Gruden in San Diego (if the Chargers don't go to the SB, Turner probably gets fired, or should imo)

I think Shanahan in SD would be interesting. That way, he could stick it to both of his former teams 4 times a year.

Cowher - Carolina Panthers

Shanahan - San Diego Chargers

Gruden - Washington Redskins

Holmgren - Minnesota Vikings

Parcells - Buffalo Bills

EDIT - Or Parcells goes back to Dallas after Jones pays him an extreme amount of money.

This is kind of hard as I think only the following teams have coaches who could be under fire this year:

Cincinnati
Minnesota
Jacksonville
Carolina
Buffalo
Maybe San Diego

Pretty much everyone else is either having success or has a HC with only 1 or 2 years of experience.

Anyway:

Shanahan: San Diego
Cowher: Carolina
Gruden: Minnesota

I think that Snyder would fall in love with Gruden's showmanship and crazy offensive ideas.

And for Gruden, I get the feeling that money talks.

I'll go with:

Shanahan in San Diego
Gruden in Jacksonville
Holmgren in San Fran or sits out again
Cowher in Carolina

I wonder if Parcells will stick around with Miami one more year if this season goes astray (which it appears to be doing). He is not one to leave something unfinished.

I also forgot about Holmgren, are there any rumors of him coming back to the NFL?

If Singletary did not show promise this year, I'd bet on Holmgren returning to the 49er's.

But, I think San Francisco will make the playoffs this year simply because the division is that bad and the 49ers already have two division wins.

If Dallas struggles in the next 2 weeks, I could definitely see Jerry Jones trying to bring Shanahan in mid-season, whether he's up for something like that, Shanahan that is, not so sure.

I think Singletary is doing a great job actually, especially considering the QB disaster they have going on right now. I was hoping the Lions would hire him as their coach, but they took Marinelli instead. Yeah, we know how THAT turned out.

This thread reminds me that Gruden is fucking insufferable on MNF.

Personally I find all three of those guys on MNF to be terrible. Jaworski was much better as a 2 minute-before the game-updates kinda guy. That stupid shit eating grin he has whenever the camera is on makes me want to puke. Tirico was awful on the radio and is even worse on tv. Just my opinions of course.

If Jacksonville doesnt seriously begin to start making headway Del Rio will be gone at the end of the season. Record aside they look terrible.

If the new coach comes in and they cant begin a tradition of winning and fast they'll be the Los Angeles Jaguars before you know it.

You act as though this matters. No idea why you have Dallas off your list of coaches under fire. Phillips has already lost the opening of Jerry's new sandbox. The Cowboys haven't won a playoff game in a decade. Dallas could go 14-2 and lose in the conference finals and Wade is history. Ditto for Daniel Snyder. You think Zorn survives this season looking like he did against the Rams? (hint: no chance in hell)

Let's break these down into catagories:

Team sucks too much, team is too cheap, GM has too much power to hire a big name coach, OR owner/GM brain dead (no idea why I left that part out of the post the first time)

Buffalo, Jacksonville, Cincy Oakland, San Diego

That leaves these teams as possibilities IF their teams do poorly:

Carolina
Washington
Dallas
Minnesota
Chicago
Houston

I'd guess Cowher in Carolina, Shanny in Dallas, Gruden stays in the booth another year. Also wouldn't shock me if Bill Parcells fired the Phins head coach and went down to the field again next year.

That would stop the Redskins? The extremely popular theory down there is that Zorn's #1 attractive feature as a head coach hire was that he would be easy to get rid of.

There is also no question that Cowher is Danny's top choice. But, I am sure he would also go with either of Shanahan or Gruden if Cowher were to go somewhere else. While I could see Cowher preferring Carolina, I just don't see them coming within 5 million dollars per year of the Redskins offer. I think we will see the first 100 million (over 10 years) head coaching contract - or at least offer - for the Redskins/Cowher pairing.

Shanahan to Dallas seems inevitable as well - but, if Cowher goes somewhere else, I think the Redskins would back up the money truck for him as well. This time, the competition would match. Could be an interesting bidding war.

I actually think Cincinnatti would be attractive to Gruden - he likes QBs and they clearly have the best one.

Don't see Minnesota as being an opening, honestly. I just don't see any obstacles to them winning the division.

What about Cowher in San Diego? I believe he wants to stay on the East coast because of family reasons, but having Philip Rivers and a near-super bowl ready team might be enough to convince him, no?

If any of those guys want the Coach/GM dual role, then Washington will not be the place for them.

I am curious as to what is going to happen if there is a strike? Do the coaches still get paid? Will the Broncos still have to come up with another $8 million to pay Mike Shanahan if there is no season?

What about Jason Garrett being the heir apparent in Dallas? That is the only reason he stayed and took the money instead of taking over the reigns in Baltimore.

I don't see anyone else in Dallas but Garrett.

Not sure Garrett even gets offered it if the team keeps sputtering. I think the shine (where did that come from, anyway) is off of him to a large degree.

If Phillips is fired, and Garrett is not offered the job, he will walk away/be fired.

I would say yes. Considering there are only a handful of coaches out there (Gruden, Cowher, Shanahan, Holmgren, Parcells) that are even in the mix for a potential coaching slot, Garrett seems like a nice bet for one of these teams.

Who knows, maybe Dallas would replace Phillips with Garrett, but I just don't see it at this point, not the way that offense has sputtered (I blame it mostly on Romo).

The more success that Mike Tomlin has gives me less confidence in Bill Cowher being successful outside of Pittsburgh. If Cowher is smart, he'll cash in this offseason, before it is too late.

I'd say:

Cowher to Carolina
Shanahan to Dallas
Gruden to Jacksonville (or Philly if Reid decides to take a break)
Holmgren takes another year off from coaching (could see him becoming a GM of an unstable team, letting a hot seated HC take on the early rebuild w/ Holmgren taking on HC duties after things get stabalized -- Cincy? Minny, if the Favre experiment fails?)

Cowher will end up close to wherever his daughter (s?) go to college. They're in Raleigh now, and if they go to Chapel Hill or State he'll probably take the Carolina job when Fox gets fired. If they go somewhere else, he'll take a reasonable job close to wherever they go.

This is pretty hard to believe, but here is the list of current active NFL coaches that have won a Super Bowl:

Bill Belichick
Tom Coughlin
Mike Tomlin

You have all the guys already discussed (Shanahan, Cowher, Gruden, Holmgren, Parcels), plus young "retirees" Dungy, Billick, along w/ guys who are probably too old, but it isn't completely out of the question (Vermeil, Gibbs, Johnson, Ditka) all out as FAs who have SB wins.

+1 on this...

I'd add Holmgren to Washington...but maybe even as just a GM or Parcells type of position. I think Snyder would be willing to give him full control, head coach & GM, if desired.

No way Jacksonville fires Del Rio after this season, mark my words. Jacksonville is bad because of Shack Harris, not Del Rio, and management knows it. He had success in many years in spite of Harris's miss and miss, and the team just got too many bad moves, from Jermaine Lewis, Jerry Porter, Hugh Douglas, and Drayton Florence to draft picks like Matt Jones, Reggie Williams, Byron Leftwich, Marcedes Lewis, etc. He only hit on two picks so far, Rashean Mathis and Maurice Jones-Drew. The Jags have had one just one Pro Bowl player drafted by them in the entire Shack Harris era, despite years with good records. He couldn;t draft, and he couldn't sign FA either. Jacksonville was the subject of the second worst personnel moves in the league after only Matt Million. Del Rio is immune, I guarantee it.

Probably some other misguided teams let Harris draft Mathis and Jones-Drew in a mean-spirited effort to subvert true competition and give Harris a false sense of accomplishment.

There were some rumors floating around Chicago that if Lovie didn't make the playoffs, he'd be out and they'd make a run at Shannahan who is a native of the area. Would also reunite him with Cutler and seems to be a great fit for the city.
