Same thing with Watson. If I am Miami I jump at the chance to trade Tua and a first for him. If I am Jax or the Jets, 2 -3 firsts. No problem!

Agreed on both points. I thought there was some type of contract benefit to first round picks (in teams' favor), with the option year. I'm not sure that is the case anymore after looking through a few links.

I think Watson is a tier up from Stafford. I'd easily give Tua + a 1st or two 1sts for him, unless he doesn't look like he wants to be with my franchise long term.

My opinion is Goff is a terrible qb that played in one of the most quarterback friendly systems in the NFL while Stafford is likely a top 8-10 guy. Despite that, I think this is a sound decision by the Lions. They get 2 years to prepare for another qb while seeing what type of qb Goff can be away from McVay. The Rams are going all in on their current roster while the Lions are accepting a rebuild. This trade helps both teams accomplish their goals.

Rams are also an interesting experiment in value and team building.

They clearly think that the other 31 teams overvalue first round picks.

If they are right about that, then they have found a real inefficiency in the system to exploit. They should remain a playoff team by constantly getting more value from first rounders through trades until the rest of the league catches up to them.

Or, if they are wrong, then the whole thing may crash down in a year or two.

But I can appreciate their actions. Having decided that they found a market inefficiency, they are going to lean into it 100%. There is no need to ever use a first round pick if someone else is going to give you more for it than you think it is worth.

I think the Rams problem will be depth. Their cap is a mess so they can't sign any good backups. If they get a lot of injuries, or injuries to one position group they are in trouble.

It doesn't even take a position group. An injury to Donald, Ramsey, or Stafford & they're in a lot of trouble in a very competitive division. Doesn't mean I think it's a terrible trade, but I don't think this is like the NBA where you can go ahead & assume both first will be mid to late 20's - pretty decent chance one will end up in the teens.

The interesting catch in there is that the current GM for the Lions was still part of the Rams front office 2-3 weeks ago.

I don't think the Rams are nearly as poorly run, but just ask the Texans how quickly things can go to shit even if you have several young elite players... I definitely don't think anyone thought they were trading an eventual #3 overall pick for Laremy Tunsil.

Yeah, you saw it the last 18 months with the line for the Rams where they just couldn’t afford the backups or to replace guys leaving from attrition or going down with injury... which is what started this whole crazy Goff downswing in the first place.

Stafford should be better suited to a scenario where everything isn’t perfect for him (he’ll he’s been a Lion for how long now?) but still, things have to go significantly right for the Rams to pass up the Packers or Chiefs IMO, so it’s a huge risk for the Rams to take. On the other hand, in for a penny in for a pound, not like the current iteration of the roster had much of a chance to win or a bright future as it stood. Just kicking the can further down the road.

The Athletic (sub required) had some potential trade offers, with commentary from both franchises' perspectives, for Watson: Deshaun Watson trade: Jets, Dolphins offer Texans best deals – The Athletic

Some of the more interesting ones:

Broncos:
Quote:
No. 9 pick in 2021 draft, 2022 first-round pick, 2023 second-round pick, QB Drew Lock, TE Noah Fant

Raiders:
Quote:
No. 17 pick in 2021 draft, 2022 first-round pick and 2023 first-round pick, QB Derek Carr

Bears:
Quote:
No. 20 pick in the 2021 draft, 2022 first-round pick and 2023 first-round pick, ILB Roquan Smith, QB Nick Foles

Jets:
Quote:
No. 2, 23 and No. 91 picks in 2021 draft, 2022 first-round pick, 2023 fourth-round pick

Dolphins:
Quote:
No. 3 and 18 picks in the 2021 draft, 2022 first-round pick, 2023 fourth-round pick, QB Tua Tagovailoa

(There were a few more, but don't want to lift too much from it)

They summarized that the Jets and Dolphins seemed like the two best offers and thought the Jets was the best. I'm not so sure about that since they seem like they are more than just a QB away from being competitive.

I think the Raiders' offer looks like the best example of a "who says no?" offer. Watson, with their young core, has to make them at least a couple wins better, I would think. The Texans don't get a top 5 pick (and probably will not), but three #1s and I would imagine that Carr (is an UFA after '22 season) can either be a quality starter for a year to see if he looks good enough to build around for awhile, could probably be flipped for another late 1/early 2 (maybe?), or can be franchised (and signed or flipped).

Really not sure why the Phins are ready to pull the plug on Tua so quick, he had normal rookie growing pains, but still has a lot of upside and while Watson gets them closer quicker, I think 2022 was really going to be when they made a run anyway.

There are also some stories coming out of Vegas that the team culture there might be suboptimal.

There's a chance that those 2022 and 2023 picks are higher in the first round than people expect.

And I like Carr.

I think I like that offer and the Dolphins' offer best if I am the Texans.

Yeah, the Dolphins offer looks like the best to me.

I'm not sure why the Raiders aren't content with Carr. Seems like he is good enough with the right team around him.

I told a friend the bears should offer Houston their choice of any 3 players on the roster plus 2 firsts and a 2nd for Watson and see what happens.

Thoughts out to him and his family.

Probably the greatest coach of the Super Bowl era to never win a Super Bowl (now that Reid has won one). I might be missing someone obvious, but he's certainly up there.

I have this gut feeling that the Bucs are going to pull it out.

The rational part of me says that the 14-2 team with all the best players and the Hall of Fame coach will win by double digits, and none of us should be surprised by it.

But I don't know . . . just got a feeling.

If I were in Vegas, I'd be primed to lose many hundreds of dollars today.

If this is Super Bowl LV, why is the logo made in such a way it looks like it's Super Bowl LIV? Apparently they made this silliness start at LI, which looked like LII, and so on, but this time around it's much sillier.

I’m with you. The VLT destroys the numerology in the logo, and has done for four years in a row
