Went all underdogs this round and surprisingly only 1 matchup gave me pause to really think about it.

Good to see the grunge scourge eliminated. Now we just need to get rid of Pink Floyd.

I went all dogs except LZ.

3/6 was also my toughest choice. But I had to go what i play in my car most. And I play the Who more than Pink Floyd.
Though, I did see Floyd in concert.

4/5 was the only one that made me stop and think. And that wasn't very long. I like Mick and the gang a little more than Freddie's bunch

3/6 was impossible so I voted for both. They are 2 of my favorite groups of all time. I've been a Floyd fan for so much longer, but since I've really discovered the Who...I can't decide.

So it boiled down to a bunch of old classic rock, with AC/DC the young Bucks of the lot.

Kind of disappointing.

True, but I think most had their formative music years in the 80s and 90s. I would expect something from that era in a "favorite" poll.

AC/DC's Back in Black
AC/DC's For Those About to Rock..,
Pink Floyd's Delicate Sound of Thunder
Queen's Made In Heaven
Queen's Live Aid 85

I didn't think The Who would be able to win this round, happy to see them in the lead currently. For a number of years of my life, they were my favorite group. I really got into Quadrophenia, enjoyed their offbeat Odds and Sods album, and other stuff.

As it stands now, I am going with Queen as long as they last, which unfortunately will probably be the final 4 with the Beatles next. Beatles changed the game for sure, but Queen is just at a level nobody has reached for me. (They are also the only group I would have voted for over my personal favorite act ever Cheap Trick)

The lack of support for the Stones and the level of support for Queen makes me scratch my head. Granted, I've never been a huge fan of Queen. Yeah, there's some classic songs there, but when you compare that to the Stones, it's no contest: between Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street you have a nearly unmatched run of awesomeness. Add in all the great songs from before and after that period and you have a group that has arguably the most impressive catalog of recorded work in rock music.

Ah well. My top vote is going to Led Zeppelin, and it looks like they're a good bet to make it to the finals.

Sure, it wasn't a technical point. The Stones and AC/DC released content decades after that. They all came up in the 60s / 70s. AC/DC you can argue the turn of the decade with Back in Black. They still are not 80s rock.

That said, I like all of these bands, they just are not in my top 8, except for the mighty Zeppelin!

The answer for how Queen can beat the Stones is easy - the vote is for favorite rock act. Beatles and Rolling Stones are the top 2 rock bands of all time. I can acknowledge that and not vote for either of them as my favorite.

I have personally never owned a Stones record. Beyond hearing them enough on XM as it is, I don't think I'll ever need to listen to them on demand. Without doubt, they are one of the biggest bands ever and I even like a bunch of their songs. But I'll take Queen every time, not just because I like them more but because they've influenced a bunch of bands I love.

Plus Queen on one album (say Night at the Opera) has far better musicianship, music styles, arrangements and variety than Stones in their entire 50 years. And yes, each member is better than their counterpart in Stones, and Queen's sum is greater than their parts. The only good thing you can say about the Stones is that they have been around longer.

Led Zeppelin didnt release singles in the UK, so that's why there's no top 10 hits. They concentrated on the album charts instead and had loads of no 1 selling albums.

IMHO, Dark Side of the Moon is one of the best albums of all time.

But what the fuck do I know? I also thought Metallica was a metric shit ton better than Queen.

Ah, no wonder. The stats didn't make much sense to me as Led Zepplin were quite popular. Not a massive following like the Beatles or Queen, but pretty strong. At least that is how I perceive it. Albums did consistently well, but none in the UK all-time top 60.

+1

This summer I worked on a massive new playlist of my all-time favorite rocks songs, mostly by choosing one to several songs from a lot of albums from 1969-1994. When I got to Dark Side, I couldn't narrow it down (except for excluding Money which I completely deleted from my library), so I got nearly the whole album on my greatest hits playlist. Incidentally, the only other albums that I have more than 4 songs from are Rumours, The Wall and Joshua Tree.

I abstained from the Who/Pink Floyd vote. I like both bands fine, but I do not have a deep understanding/appreciation of either. And I know that they each have very devoted fans, so it did not seem fair to pick a side by, in effect, flipping a coin, when others would have much stronger opinions.

And, as of this post, it is tied 42-42. So I am glad I abstained. May the best band win.

Oh yeah, not even close. Back then and now. Led Zepplin is largely forgotten in the UK, very rare to hear their music. Queen have the no.1 and 10 UK album of all time. Zepplin nothing in the top 60.

Beatles have to be no.1 in the UK in a poll like this. Queen probably 2, although I wouldn't count out Oasis.

This bewildered me so completely that I actually threw out a question of "perception as most popular -- regardless of which you prefer personally" on my FB. (Interestingly, virtually every person who replied is either a musician or someone that I know for certain has a very strong sustainted interest in music, zero "casuals" responded either way)

Almost every answer came back with some form of "that's a tough/close one".

Rather than re-type, I'll just paste my own comment to an early reply

At no time in 50 years (prior to today) thought this could even be a question. I'm not a huge fan of either, so I'm not biased by that or anything. I just literally never heard anyone put Queen on that level before today, whereas I was almost beaten over the head countless times for admitting that I wasn't an over the moon Zep fan.

I'd go with the gap in popularity narrowing over the past 20 years or so, but I'm genuinely shocked to see the responses (wife said Queen after wavering over the question for a bit).

You could knock me over with the proverbial feather on this one.
