Mount Rushmore: HBO Original Series
The Wire: Hands down #1, sort of like Lincoln up there on Rushmore.
Deadwood: Too short but maybe like the British shows that is what is necessary so you don't pull a Homeland season 12 of the same crap. Band of Brothers Curb Your Enthusiasm: Could be because I'm a huge Seinfeld fan but this show is my sense of humor with the R-rated stuff Seinfeld couldn't do. Omissions: I left off Game of Thrones just because it hits at about 75% but I just can't get into 25% of it. Never had that problem with the Wire or Deadwood. (OK maybe the Kima and Jimmy home life stuff but that was like 5 minutes) Also left off the Sopranos. Never could get into that show either which is weird because I love Ray Donovan which is basically just a cheap Sopranos knock-off. Honorable Mentions: The Leftovers Season 1 True Dectective Eastbound and Down/Vice Principals combo Rome |

When I saw this I legitimately thought that there was a new HBO miniseries called "Mount Rushmore", and figured to get its own thread, it must be particularly noteworthy or controversial in some way.

The Wire
The Sopranos Game of Thrones Curb Your Enthusiasm If the MR question is "greatness" rather than "your personal favorites," then I think this is pretty clearly the list. |

Oz was great and I could have given it credit for being a pioneering show and dropped Curb for it. The other three on my list are, IMO, 3 of the 5 or 6 best television shows of all time.

That's why Game of Thrones wasn't even in contention for me. Great in moments, but just good overall. It'd end up somewhere in the 7th-9th range overall for me I think. |

...but "greatness" isn't the same thing as "goodness." I'd argue that GoT has created a niche in culture significant enough to absolutely cement its slot here, regardless of where it lands on the quality continuum between good and great. The Rolling Stones aren't great because they're good, they're great because they're the fuckin Stones, man. |

I have my frustrations with the last couple of seasons of Game of Thrones but I don't see how it gets left off of any Mount Rushmore of HBO shows. I don't think its cultural impact is matched by any show on HBO and the first 3-4 seasons were brilliant.

Fair enough, I see it differently though. You could argue that the Walking Dead has done the same thing currently, but its a downright bad TV show. Does GoT get on a list because its just good enough + impact? In my view, that's why I have Oz higher up. Great for a few seasons then became pretty flawed. But Oz was completely groundbreaking, and without Oz, I'm not sure the Sopranos, The Wire, or Breaking Bad exist. so Oz gets bonus points for me because that kind of impact is far more meaningful than GoT's in my mind. |

In that case, how does one leave off "Sex and the City" from their lists? It's niche in the culture was pretty significant itself.

I think Sex and the City edges out Curb, but that's entirely for the cultural niche part.

Yeah, Sex and the City was a cultural phenomenon every much as big as Game of Thrones. There are some that argue that it basically created 'brunch' culture.
Curb has always been, IMO, seen in the wider culture as Seinfeld 2.

Band of Brothers
Game of Thrones The Wire Curb Your Enthusiasm Rome - If not for the sped up Season 2... Entourage - Loved it, but was always a step below the greats. Oz, Six Feet Under, The Sopranos - Gonna have to get around to watching these at some point Honorable Mention for VICE and Last Week Tonight - the issue with these, for me, is rewatchability. Their content out dated pretty quickly. My four MR picks get rewatched regularly, especially Band of Brothers. |

The thing that turned me off from Deadwood is that that they tried to build the hardware shop guy up too much too early and that every other word in the show is c***s*****. It gets kind of tedious.
