Glad you made it out.......that's the important part. I recently went with an alarm company that automatically does fire as well, peace of mind.

Very sorry to hear this news. Best wishes in the coming weeks dealing with insurance, getting a new place, potentially a new pet, etc.

Echo what several others have said about your demeanor seeming really good in comparison to the mess I expect I would be in similar conditions.

I'm keeping myself upbeat. My dad and I were just over at the rubble and planning out how we are going to situate the new house. My insurance company has been great so far. I've got a great support system in place and I'm excited for what the future holds.

Tonight I will be cheering on my Wisconsin Badgers and not worrying about anything else! Again, thanks everybody for the well wishes.

I suppose at this point it matters very little, but has the cause of the fire become more clear now, lungs? Or is it still a mystery?

Starting point for the fire was the garage. This house was built in the 1940s. Who knows how shoddy the wiring job was. We probably will never know for sure.

Put money down on a new house yesterday. Should be built and ready by the end of the summer. Insurance company has been good, they cut a check for the new house a little while back, just need to finalize my possessions list. With what they've valued so far, they've been very fair ($15 a piece for all my hundreds of CDs that were sitting in my attic that I've already transferred to MP3???).

So things are looking up. Again thanks everybody for the good thoughts, it's helped out a bunch in this whole process.

Did you ever figure out if any of your cows are descended from one of Mrs. O'Leary's?

Yikes lungs - I did not see this thread until now. Really sorry to hear about your house - I'm glad to hear you're starting the new house process and (knock on wood) the insurance company has been fair - I have heard nightmares about insurance claims due to fire or water.

Good luck bud!

Can't blame the cows, they were about a half mile down the road from my house

The house is actually going to be built in a factory and shipped to the site.

I really should post pictures of the destruction around the house right now. There was a big red barn, a small red shed, and an old red hog house/chicken coop on the property (none of which were used in many, many years). We had a guy come in and pay us to reclaim the timber from all that so he can sell it to hipsters for their bars. It's quite the sight of destruction at the moment.

I'm picturing something along the lines of a man-made tornado.
