Top 100 Coaches in the NCAA

Thought this might generate some discussion. Maybe not. I've always liked this site, they seem to hit things pretty close to the mark most of the time, and this list doesn't seem to be one of those "let's say something stupid to generate a lot of hits" lists. So what do you think?

Leavitt over Schiano? /thread

Geez, how bad do those 10 coaches have to be in order to be behind Lane Kiffin with what he's done so far?

And they were not nice to Randy Shannon...he's going to be a good one. Kragthorpe should probably be #99, with Kiffin stuck in the rear.

Bill Lynch, 86? I think they left off the number in front of 86.

Top 100 based on what?
Guys you wish were in charge of your program for a year? A decade?
Coaching one game you had to win? Something else?

The most glaring questionables to me are having Randy Shannon eleven spots behind Gene Chizik and having David Cutcliffe any spots behind Rich Brooks. And having Dave Clawson on the list ahead of anybody.

There can't be a criteria here. Spurrier #11? Really? If this list came out last year RichRod would've been top 10, and Dantonio one spot behind him, ahead of Les Miles no less?

Don't get it.

Not officially. He had Derrick Johnson, who got lined up all over the place. He was unstoppable in college.

Hmm...I'm a Penn State fan and even I think that Paterno (assuming we're ranking current ability of coaches) is pretty high.

By what criteria do they put Steve Sarkisian 18 spots ahead of Doug Marrone, and 21 ahead of Mike Locksley?

Petrino ahead of Ferentz? or Miles? Rodriguez ahead of Miles, someone that has a National Championship?

I agree with #1. Butch Davis seems a bit high.

Don't get it.

In this ranking we are factoring in what the coach means currently to college football. Obviously if we went by alltime resumes a guy like Bobby Bowden or Steve Spurrier would be much higher.

OMG, if that is the criteria, then this is a huge fail.

Dave Clawson ahead of anybody breathing or less than 3 days dead?

I like seeing Jim Grobe up there that high. When he almost came to Arkansas, I seemed to be one of the few people around here that was thrilled; it was like a kick in the gut when he changed his mind.

From what I've seen so far, I would be surprised if in the end he did turn out to be better than Petrino, though.

Hard to compare the two when you factor in the ability to recruit to their respective schools.

I agree, I would probably put Brown just below Tressel. I think the lack of winning the conference hurts Brown, but Texas is in it every year and they get great talent in that program.

I agree with that. In terms of organization, professionalism, and coaching ability though, it would appear to be pretty darn tough to beat what I've seen so far from Petrino is basically what I meant. Not saying it couldn't be done by Grobe (and from all accounts, he would give him a run for his money, which is why I was fired up about him), but it would be somewhat surprising to me.

A part of me still wishes Grobe were here so I could see what he could do.

What the coach currently means to college football?

Good god, I hate to keep saying positive things about KU but ask anyone who follows the big 12 about how Bill Snyder compares right now (no history, just right now) to Mark Mangino or Gary Pinkel. According to this list he is a step up. And of course Bo Pelini who hasn't beaten either of these guys yet is higher as well. Sure...

"What the coach means to college football"? That's a staggeringly vague description. Butch Davis is the 5th most meaningful coach to college football? Really? Seriously? He's only been at UNC two years and was out of college coaching for a number of years before that.

Oh, and he keeps getting beat by the #54 coach on the list. How is this list even valid?

It's stupid because Snyder should either be in the top 10 for doing one of the best coaching jobs of all time (if you're talking about his overall body of work) or probably fairly low if you're talking about his current ability if you take into account that he's been out of coaching.

Also, there's no list I would put Mangino over Pinkel in any facet save that he seems to own MU in head to head games. The only reason that even is a thought in my head is because Pinkel always comes into the game with more talent and a team that has done better and Mangino does better by comparison. Yes, he lost the big meeting two years ago but Pinkel has the better team every year yet Mangino has a winning record. (ed. note: I wanted to work in an "eating contest" joke there badly, but just couldn't pull the trigger)

Again, this just goes to show that this list is just one big April Fools joke

This list is so horrible it's barely worth the effort to mock. Dantonio and Pellini ahead of a guy who recently won a national title? And Pellini ahead of Pinkle and Mangino, two guys he hasn't even beat yet?

Dantonio is probably the worst. He's barely a .500 coach and he's in the top 25???

Don't get it.

Before everything is said and done, Dantonio will be in the top 25 and higher every single year. Although I wouldn't say he merits his high spot right now.

In terms of running the entire football program, yes. You can feel free to start a poll, but I would trust what I have seen of his job performance (and pretty much everyone that is involved with the football program since he has taken over) over the opinion of people that aren't involved with him since he's been here. You may, of course, feel free to trust the side that hasn't actually seen what has been going on here since then.

Please understand, I realize it was rough in Atlanta and things didn't end in an admirable fashion (that is a whole separate issue which I'm not interested in going over again).

His professionalism here has been along the lines of freakishly professional, though, and that is what I'm commenting on.

edit: and that is why I say it would be difficult for Jim Grobe--it would be difficult for anyone, and I think I have more respect for Jim Grobe than your average person does, I'm pretty sure.

Do be honest if the list was top 1oo recruiting coqaches yeah he should be NEAR the top and even on this list he should be in the top 10-15 coaches but come on. The guy coaches at USC it isn't like the poor bastard coaching at Boise St. evryone wants to play at USC. All he has to do is give these guys a playbook, uniform, pads, and a Song Girl and they are all ready to tear some poor bastards heads off in the PAC.

Tim Brewster should have another 6 in front of his rank.

For some reason I want Miami (FL) to hire Mike Leach. That could be awesome, or at least entertaining.

Well, clearly Michigan needs to keep RR and not go after Harbaugh.

I still think June Jones is too low. I think he is a top 30 head coach.

Kirk Ferentz is in my top 10. What he is doing at Iowa is remarkable.

June Jones is for sure a top 30 coach as is Bronco Mendenhall IMO and Chris Peterson is top 10 for what he has done at BSU, as is Harbaugh.

Overrated = Davis, Petrino and Rich Rod.

I vote for both, it would definitely be a fun team to watch and Leach could have his very own Pirate ship within driving distance.
