RIP John Madden

He passed away unexpectedly this morning. For some reason my eyes won't stop leaking. Maybe it is just a culmination of so many we have lost this year. But this one hurts.

It is remarkable the impact that man had on the sport of football. My childhood was listening to him call games and playing his video game.

Damn. Madden brought a ton of happiness to me through his announcing and his games. R.I.P., John. You'll be missed.

Few people ever meant as much to professional football as Madden.

Rest in peace

It really was a privilege to have John Madden/Pat Summerall and Merlin Olsen/Dick Enberg teach me about NFL football.

RIP Coach.

Man, as big a role as Football has played in my life as a player and coach only magnifies how much this hurts.

Rest in Peace coach, you changed the way America watched the game.

I still—to this day in 2021–picture Madden/Summeral when I narrate football in my head.

I've only known of old Madden in my life, but I love reading about younger Madden. He really did explode onto the scene in football as both very young coach and then a still young announcer. This perspective from a 1983 SI article is pretty cool.

Fwiw, Dutch and Belgian media report on his passing, despite that they give zero attention to the NFL's ongoing regular season.

NFL Network should cancel its talking head shows for today and just do a marathon of 80s/90s NFC games.
