Did you ever work at McDonalds?

I admit it. I worked there, and even dated several burger queens (as my dad liked to call them) back in the day. They were all psychos. I think all the grease fried their brains...

I couldn't stand the idea of working in fast food. I worked retail instead (Office Max). I suppose that's more a lateral step than anything.

No shame in that. I used to stay sober at all the parties in college so I'd have an easier time picking up drunk chicks.

I Was 16, hated working for an awning guy so I quit that. My mom said find a job or no computer for a week every day you dont have a job.

Closeset I've been to fast food is Woodstock's, but that's (my opinion, I guess) a huge step up from say your local Domino's, whatever chain you have.

I worked for Long John Silver's for a couple of years in college. It wasn't too bad, really. Never dated the seafaring equivalent of a "burger queen" however.

I worked at a McDonald's in high school / early college days and loved it. We had a good crew (a fair number of mature, reasonable people, especially on the closing shift I worked a lot) and reasonable management which made all the difference in the world. I worked at a different McDonald's for a month or so in college that didn't have a good staff or management and it was miserable.

But the experience gained at the first one was invaluable for teaching some responsibility, independence, and providing a small amount of cash to pay for car insurance and gas...

I worked at Denny's (Does that count?) when I was in high school (moved on to Chili's when I was in college). I was the dishwasher, cook , and eventually a waiter at Denny's. It wasn't that bad at all. To be honest, I really don't understand how people worked retail while they were in highschool/college. The tips that you can make as a server (well, at least in the Northeast, I've heard horror stories about southern tippers), are at least 2x what you'd make as retail.

To put it in perspective, I always worked the "breakfast shift" at Denny's (6 am - 2/3pm) and never walked out of there with less than 100 in my pocket (that would be a terrible shift), and most of the time around 150-160. And this was 5 years ago. Plus you're always running around doing stuff so the time really flies by.

my first job was as a dishwasher at Friendly's, back in the days of the polyester uniforms. that's about as close to a McDonalds job as I had.

worked at a supermarket too, but that was for only a brief 10 years of utter hell.

I've worked in a number of fast food/sit-down dine-in/delivery places. I’ve worked every job, from busboy to waiter to cook to bartender to delivery driver to assistant manager to manager.

I was a Domino's delivery driver for a summer during college.

After that experience I decided to spend my next summer as a human guinea pig in a drug study at the local hospital.

Despite all the blood draws, stool samples, movement restriction, prohibition on showering (!), mandatory consumption of spinach, and potential for serious drug interactions, I found the latter experience preferable.

And it paid better, too.

Really? Wow, you must have worked at a bad store. It was nothing for me to walk out with $100 after about 3 hours on a Friday night delivering, and $200-300 after 6 on a Saturday. It was barely work! I took a paycut and added a huge headache when I went from driver to manager.

You're right - it was more the people than the work per se that bugged me. And I never came anywhere close to the kind of money you described, which probably would've softened my opinion of the place considerably. It also would've helped if I had something better to deliver pizzas in than my '82 Chevette. That bad boy used to go from 0-60 in 5.3 minutes!

Why didn't you parlay this into a career as a pharmacist? I'm probably taking it too lightly, but that seems like an easy profession (with the exception of working weekends). The doctor writes the prescription, you fill the prescription. If there's an conflict, a computer should point that out to you. Correct?

At the store I worked at, the pharmacist had the best job. In the pharmacy, they had a fridge and a television, to go along with many good-looking pharmacy-tech's. The only day they were busy was the first of the month and when I say busy, we're talking a line two or three deep. Cake job.

You know Pharmacy is usually a 5 year college degree (well for Pharmacy D degree anyway) Crap, I'm forgetting all the details my pharmacy ex-girlfriend told me back in the day. Anyway, she was in some Pharm-D program that was 5 years long. Pharmacy students have to take a lot of hard courses actually to understand pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and various other drug interactions.

I didn't realize they were in Florida, but looking at the list of cities, it's everywhere northerners go.

One Summer in high school I got grounded for a month - the only time I was allowed to leave the house was to go to work. I already worked at Wendy's at night, so I got a second job opening Burger King in the morning. I added a 3rd job when another Wendy's in the area was in dire need of additional crew. So at one point I was working from about 7a to 1a three or four days a week.

Good times.

I had just dropped out of College and was desperate for a job. Moved in with my sister that lived up in Connecticut. I worked at the Naugatuck II store (nostalgia for anyone living in that area).

I was still in football-shape when I worked there and the outfit they gave me was so tight, it looked like I had spray painted my clothes on, or I was trying hard to be on an episode of Simon and Simon.

Not to sound like an old fart, but just to be working is commendable. Not everyone is fortunate enough to get a "spiffy" job either early or later in life. At the very least, it will make you appreciate whatever comes your way later and you learn the value of the dollar.

At the pharmacy I worked at, it was amazingly busy and the pharmacist was pretty stressed much of the time. I worked in a small town that was growing very very quickly, but at the time we were the only drug store for miles. Anyway, the pharmacists I worked with were very frustarted much of the time, because much of their job involved sitting on hold with insurance companies to find out why the prescriptions they were trying to fill weren't being approved.

Also, at the two stores I worked at in high school, the pharmacists were very overworked and underpaid. The first place was open 9-9 Monday through Saturday and noon-6 Sunday. We had two pharmacists. One of them would work 9-5 M-F, the other 3-9. Then they took turns working the full weekend. One weekend pharmacist A worked 9-9 Saturday/12-6 Sunday, the next weekend pharmacist B.

It really looked like a pretty crappy life to me. I couldn't have done the school either

Every time I travel back to New England and Upstate New York, Friendly's is my #1 choice (unless I'm traveling with my wife, then we go really upscale).

As far as early jobs, I applied to several fast foods but I am very, very glad I didn't work at any of them. Instead, I worked at Thrifty Drugs dishing out ice cream and selling hooch (as well as cleaning the @%#$! place at 11:00pm). Then for a very short while, I worked in the back room at Farrell's (you know, the place where they served "ice cream" in a trough?). Once in college, I got very easy on-campus jobs.

DD: Keep forgetting to mention to you. When my wife and I were traveling across So. NH in September, we traveled on Rt 101 through Keene. Almost got caught behind a massive line of cars turning left off of 101 right by Applebee's. It was the Sunday crowd but I imagine some of those folks in line weren't going to turn left but they had no way of knowing why it's backed up. If that makes any sense.
