So I come home from work and find that the apartment across the street from me is on fire. Fun times.

Ohio Living is a nursing home but that isn't what was on fire.

The building that was/still is on fire is an apartment complex. Local news is saying that everyone living in the building has been accounted for.

I still see the lights of police cars and fire trucks flashing through my windows even at 11:30 pm.

It's all kind of surreal because I've been thinking all day "That could've been my condo"

I remember my first apartment in Dayton. I was on the computer (as usual) typing my little dreamy dreams away...when my friends called me and asked if I was okay as they saw on the news that my apartment complex was onfire. I looked around and said no it did not seem to be on fire. I went in the other room and sure enough I saw fire truck lights through the window reflected off the wall. Was surreal then too It was the apartment building caddycorner that was on fire.

Freshman year of college, our wing of the dorm burnt down. Dude 2 floors below me fell asleep while candles burned and they caught something on fire. Fortunately, all my stuff was saved since we were 2 floors up but my clothes were basically unwearable from the smoke.

The main thing I remember about that night is that I was young and stupid and never used to take my contacts out at night, but that night I did and when they came banging on our doors at 2am to evacuate, I couldn't find my glasses and went blind for a day until they let us into the dorm to get stuff. I literally had to hold onto my roommate's shirt to get out of the building.

Fires are a fitting topic as six years ago today I almost burned to a crisp in my home if not for the weird premonition I had a month before it happened while walking through Menard’s and bought all new smoke detectors. I hadn’t had functioning smoke detectors for a few years before that. I believe in most alternate realities I am dead.

So check your smoke detectors!

We had a strange event happen on Tuesday night. We were watching the NCAA games in his hospital room, when he started feeling flushed and really light-headed. His pulse rate was pretty high (~140), his BP was elevated as well, and the monitor was reporting A-Fib. The nurse came in, and thought maybe it was because he'd just received his meds and didn't have much to eat for supper, and would monitor for the next 30 minutes or so.

He then said he thought he might need to go to the bathroom, which was good, because he hadn't had a bowel movement since the surgery. They moved him over to the toilet, and a few minutes later he had several legendary farts. The things stories are written about and passed down through the ages.

He said "I'm feeling a lot better". I looked up at the monitors, and all his numbers instantly dropped to completely normal: 70 pulse, 130/65 BP, and no A-Fib.

Without getting into too much {ahem} personal detail about any particular patient buuuut ... I can tell you that this hardly surprises me at all.

(Among the side effects of many pain meds is extreme constipation ... it ain't no joke)

About 3am that day, he did have the first BM, on his own. They were going to force it the next day, one way or another, if it didn't happen naturally. The way he described it was like the puking scene from Team America World Police but out the other end. Musical crescendos and all.

It would be really really nice if this tinnitus would at least reduce its volume. It's like a bunch of cicadas in my ears.

The world’s longest runway is twice the length of the world’s shortest commercial flight

Not sure - is there a seaplane commercial flight shorter than 1.7 miles?
Edit - or I guess the fact was under: there’s a runway longer?

I remember landing in Oakland once and feeling like we spent at least 1/3rd of that flight driving on the runway.

Reminds me of one of the funniest true stories I ever heard. A coworker brought her husband to the emergency room. He was extremely constipated and uncomfortable. For days he had tried everything to solve the issue. The nurse gave him a liquid that they use only in extreme cases. His wife asked "Will this work?" and the nurse replied "Definitely, give it time." So the husband went into the bathroom down the hall with a couple of magazines. He was in there for a very long time, over an hour I think. His wife walked over and asked "Are you ok?" a few times. Finally, as she's sitting in the very quiet waiting area, everybody hears this loud primal scream coming from the hallway.
"ARRRRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!!" He came out about 15 minutes later pale as a ghost and the smell was unbearable in the bathroom. He kept trying to hide his face so no one could identify him.

My friend could hardly tell the story to us the next day. She was laughing so hard she was purple. Poor guy.

Yeah, it was a bad attempt at humor for the runway length.

I already hate Apple products as it is, but I would like to murder whoever came up with the new commercial. It's not just nails on a chalkboard bad, it's nails through my ear drums.

Two random thoughts:

- I had forgotten how much I love sourdough hard pretzels until this weekend. Now I can't stop eating them (well, I've limited myself to 2 at a time but at least once a day since Friday including right now).

- We have a Bradford Pear in the backyard and it is beautiful when in bloom, but the damn flowers smell like rotten shrimp. Our backyard is gross right now. Is this another one of God's inside jokes?

Woke up to every fish in our 55 gallon aquarium either dead or dying. Looks like they have ich. To make it even better my wife flushed the biggest one down the toilet and apparently it is stuck in the pipes.

Had my first eye exam since my lasik followups about 15-20 years ago. Had been noticing things just weren't as sharp.

Good news is, my eyes aren't AS bad as I thought they were. But...age defeats lasik. Regressed a little bit, 20/30 and 20/40, but not as horrible as I thought. Still gonna wind up having a pair of occaisonal use glasses, though.

I've been putting a motion sensing trail camera out in my garden each night for the last few weeks, see what wildlife I can catch on video. It's been raccoons, foxes, squirrels, cardinals, and the occasional possum. Last couple of days has been a raccoon digging frenzy, the cicadas are on their way and close to the surface, it's a good time to be a raccoon. Best so far was a vulture that landed in my garden to drink from my garden waste bin after a couple of days rain filled it up.

So far nothing cool (like deer or bears) and nothing scary (like rats or people), but still daily fun to see what's been out there.

Yesterday I headed down to pick up the camera and there was something nasty a couple of feet in front of it, on close inspection it turned out to be a raccoon head.

The motion sensing camera gave me 10 minutes of video of a fox gnawing at a severed raccoon head, having a dump, then wandering off.

Isnt nature great? Judging by the smell when I picked the head up on a shovel and launched it over my back fence, it wasnt a fresh head.

I've put the same on my back porch. I have at least 3 different foxes that come to visit each night. I've had a group of raccoons occasionally come, along with a possum. The coolest visitor is a ringtail that shows up 3 or 4 times per week. One of the videos shows the ringtail up in a tree, looking down at a fox.

I also put the trail camera in my living room to see what my cats did overnight. They're not nocturnal, they sleep all night too.
