FOF2k4: New Orleans Saints - Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler
Introduction In a football season unlike any NFL team has ever faced, the New Orleans Saints continued to do what they have always done best: lose game after game. When Hurricane Katrina devastated their hometown of New Orleans on the eve of their first game of the regular season, many league officials wondered if the Saints organization would even be able to field a team, and serious questions remained as to where and when the storm-crossed team would play. With the Superdome shattered by high winds and the streets of their corporate headquarters flooded, owner Tom Benson examined the options and bravely decided to abandon the city, his season ticket holders, and the fans, and flee to San Antonio, desperately pledging to move the team there permanently in an attempt to grab as much money off the table as quickly as possible under the cover of the nation's greatest natural disaster. With players and staff separated from their homes and families indefinitely, the team demonstrated incredible resolve in the face of adversity. Off the field, players made a point of using days off to visit fans scattered by the storm in shelters in Houston, Atlanta, and Baton Rouge. On the field, the Saints continued to prove the naysayers wrong and played with a consistency and resolve that have impressed many across the nation. Sporting an ignominious 3-13 record, the Saints bounced back to their usual level of performance and played as if Hurricane Katrina never happened. "Watching them was sheer torture," said displaced fan John Maurice. "It's like the whole team reached down deep inside and worked to play the kind of football that we have all depended on year in and year out. I've never been prouder to be a Saints fan. I know that no matter what I can always count on them to go out there every Sunday and take it up the ass." Pro Bowl wide receiver Joe Horn was modest about his team's achievements this year. "I don't want to make a big deal out of it. We knew that there were a lot of fans out there who were counting on us, and we didn't want to let them down. I think a lot of people if they turned on their TVs and saw us racking up big wins and heading to the playoffs would be confused and disturbed. Instead we go out there and play Saints football just like we do every year." When questioned about what he thinks of the Saints fans unofficially referring to 2005 as "Saints Torture Time," Horn was self-effacing. "We don't worry about all that stuff. Sure, torture is the hot thing these days, but we just try to go out there and be consistent and do the little things the fans count on: dropping balls, lining up offsides, pissing away leads, whatever it takes. Now if you want to be all trendy and call that torture, well, I can't argue with you." Aside from visiting with fans, many of the team leaders have also lent their time and talent to a fund-raising song and video earmarked to raise money for hurricane relief. Top New Orleans musical talents Branford Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr., and rapper Master P have recorded a rap song and video with team members called "The Saints Second Line Torture Shuffle." The song has already raised over thirty thousand dollars for storm relief as fans have snapped up copies of the video that features game footage of the team self-destructing on the football field intercut with shots of players being playfully tortured by whip-wielding fans in the streets of the French Quarter. Despite all the media fanfare that goes with another dismal losing season, quarterback Aaron Brooks remains firmly committed to doing his job and helping the community as well. Recently at a hospital visit in Shreveport, Brooks chatted with a group of young fans. When Michael Green, a six year old fan recovering from a broken leg, asked if Brooks thought they could keep it up and pull out a big loss on Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons, the quarterback smiled and guaranteed a defeat. As the children cheered, Brooks handed out autographed footballs and told Green, "We're gonna lose big, Michael, and I'm gonna throw an interception for you and for each of your three brothers, too." The pediatric ward exploded in cheers. Being a Saints fan is torture, and they wouldn't have it any other way. "Laissez les bon temps rouler" a.k.a "Let the good times roll!" [This is a fictional dynasty that's main goal will be to right the New Orleans Saints, starting with a replay of the 2005 season and hopefully leading them to a Super Bowl appearance sometime in the foreseeable future!] |

Saints Fire GM Loomis; Name Romero New GM
New Saints GM Grant Romero's objective is simple: To build and maintain a Super Bowl-winning team in New Orleans. Relying on polished leadership skills, a keen attention to detail and a myriad of lessons learned from over six years in the NFL. Executive Vice-President/General Manager Grant Romero has proven to be a natural for the legion of responsibilities that come with directing the Saints toward that objective. Always cool in his approach, Romero possesses a combination of talents and experiences that mesh seamlessly with the everyday duties of the position. He will oversee all aspects of the club's football operations, including coaching, player personnel, salary cap management, contract negotiations, equipment, video, athletic training and public relations. Though his title and authority have evolved during his stint in New Orleans, Romero continues to follow the same fundamental beliefs that have defined his NFL tenure: Have confidence in those around you, carefully consider every option and be assertive and resolute with each decision. In assembling a team, Romero believes in building through the draft and complementing the roster through free agency. His background in managing the salary cap helps immensely in that effort, because in today's NFL landscape cap management cannot be separated from personnel decisions. Romero understands how the two areas connect when completing a roster. Romero brings a blend of experiences to his position. In his former post as Director of Football Administration, he handled contract negotiations with free agents and draft picks and also managed the club's salary cap structure. From draft meetings to post-practice evaluation sessions, Romero has been a trusted voice among the Saints' highest management circle since he arrived in 2000 and his views have proven to be as savvy as his approach. |

Season Preview
Preseason Roster New Orleans Saints Roster, Scout Overview Looking at the initial roster that I've been given to work with, things don't look very good. The team has a lot of dead weight in the form of veteran players with minimal or no talent and huge bonus money tied to them for the next two to three seasons. My first order of business will be to rumage through the available free agents and maybe sign a few undrafted kids that look like the might have a future. Then I will need to decide who stays and who goes in the way of veterans. I don't mind dead cap room for this year but would like to stay away from the future. More to come..... 2005 New Orleans Saints Schedule

After sitting down with the coaching staff and looking over current players scouting reports, it was obvious that we have a lot of talent (especially on defense) but that we also have a lot of dead weight taking up roster spots that could be held by somone of some use. So after looking over the initial roster, I made the tough (but easy) decision of parting ways with the following players:
QB Todd Bouman (11/33) - $410,000 lost cap in 2005; $410,000 lost cap in 2006 QB Adrian McPherson (9/35) - $40,000 lost cap in 2005; $80,000 lost cap in 2006 RB Aaron Stecker (27/32) - $160,000 lost cap in 2005; $320,000 lost cap in 2006 FB Jasen Isom (16/34) - $0 lost cap TE Lamont Hall (19/27) - $0 lost cap WR Nate Poole (21/32) - $0 lost cap WR Talman Gardner (17/30) - $0 lost cap WR Chase Lyman (18/27) - $140,000 lost cap in 2005; $420,000 lost cap in 2006 G Jamar Nesbit (15/23) - $100,000 lost cap in 2005; $100,000 lost cap in 2006 G Kendyl Jacox (29/29) - $690,000 lost cap in 2005; $690,000 lost cap in 2006 G Montrae Holland (21/29) - $110,000 lost cap in 2005 T Spencer Folau (13/15) - $250,000 lost cap in 2005; $250,000 lost cap in 2006 DE Tony Bryant (21/25) - $0 lost cap DT Shaun Smith (12/28) - $0 lost cap DT Willie Whitehead (22/29) - $160,000 lost cap in 2005 LB Ronald McKinnon (20/23) - $0 lost cap LB Roger Knight (18/24) - $0 lost cap LB T.J. Slaughter (27/34) - $0 lost cap CB Aaron Beasley (23/34) - $0 lost cap CB Fred Thomas (21/23) - $1,250,000 lost cap in 2005; $2,500,000 lost cap in 2006 CB Fakhir Brown (18/25) - $150,000 lost cap in 2005 S Jay Bellamy (27/27) - $250,000 lost cap in 2005; $250,000 lost cap in 2006 S Steve Gleason (20/34) - $0 lost cap S Mel Mitchell (16/37) - $30,000 lost cap ____________________________________ $3,740,000 lost cap in 2005 | $5,020,000 lost cap in 2006 I looked for any possible reason to keep these guys. The organization saw nothing in any of the players that would warrant keeping them on the roster for this season or next. Overall, we are looking at $3,740,000 lost cap room this year and $5,020,000 next season. Looks bad on paper but it is a small price to pay to rid the franchise of the dead weight that was dragging it down. After the players were notified of their release, we were able start the tidous task of sifting through hundreds of scouting reports on the available undrafted free agent rookies. After spending two days working out our targeted players, we signed the following players to one-year contracts: QB Junior Barlow (12/45) - kid looks to have a solid future as a backup QB; good ability at all passing distances; excellent timing rating and kick holding. QB Jerome Maeser (11/44) - not quite as good as Barlow but has decent potential and high volatility (84); excellent kick holding ability and will be the primary holder this season. LG Lincoln Clark (12/40) - just a body; decent future as a backup possibly. LG Austin Hall (17/42) - just a body but one with very high volatility (86); decent future as a backup maybe even a starter. RG Harold Farr (13/42) - a kid that will be thrust into a starting role this season due to limited guard talent; decent potential, enough that if he develops could become a decent starter. LT Nicky Rose (14/53) - couldn't believe that we were able to find this kid in the free agency pool; looks to have great future potential at run and pass blocking; no blocking strength and decent future endurance. LT Antoine Rivers (22/47) - similar to Rose, except with high volatility (81); could possibly start down the road. RT Broderick Batch (18/49) - great future potential as a run blocker; low potential everwhere else but has a 93 volatility rating. DT Brant Griffin (21/47) - kid has a great future from the end position; little light at 289 pounds for a DT, so we will look to get him some playing time from the DE position; great future potential in run defense, technique and strength. DT Adam Schwartz (18/51) - has all the abilities we look for in a solid DT; this 6-4, 323 pounder has great potential at stuffing the run and pass rush technique; only limited by the amount of young talent ahead of him on the depth chart. LB Dennis Randle (21/47) - we had very little talent at linebacker and the addition of Randle should help that; projected to be our starting WLB to start the season; no run stopping ability at all but solid across the board everywhere else. CB Wayne Gillespie (13/41) - decent future as a backup; might have to start due to lack of talent at the CB position; should battle it out with veteran CB Jason Craft for the starting role but we will be watching other teams releases for a chance to upgrate. CB Howie Lindsay (12/34) - just a body primarily; decent bars might make him a decent backup one day but mainly signed him for his high volatility and a hopefully eventual boom down the road. SS Oscar Prince (20/55) - a love safeties and when we saw this guy on the free agent market, we had to have him; good future in all areas; should be an excellent backup/spot starter for us given the amount of talent we already have at the position. SS Fred Urbanchek (23/55) - another guy we just had to have; future similar to Prince's except better ability to pick off the QB; again should be an excellent backup/spot starter for us. On to the preseason games..... Last edited by Man_In_Black : 03-26-2006 at 05:35 PM. |

Before the season gets underway we decide to add a couple free agents to round out our preseason roster:
RB Brandon Bennett (20/24) - signed to return kicks as he has a kick return rating of 82/90. WR Karl Williams (31/34) - signed to return punts as he has a punt return rating of 88/95. Last edited by Man_In_Black : 03-26-2006 at 05:32 PM. |

Saints Preseason Games
Preseason - Week 2
Preseason - Week 3
Preseason - Week 4
Preseason - Week 5
We finish the preseason with a 3-1 record, somewhat surprising considering the amount of playing time that my starters actually spent on the field. There were definitely some surprises during preseason, players that were not expected to contribute or only on a limited basis actually making a case for playing time. Week 1, 2005
Game Notes: Not exactly the way we invisioned opening the season, as Seattle ran all over us and won 24-16. RB Shaun Alexander (34 carries, 180 yds) and QB Matt Hasselbeck (19/26, 294 yds, 3 TDs) had great games to carry the Seahawks. Our guys looked sluggish all game long, probably the lack of playing time the starters saw during the preseason. QB Aaron Brooks (11/29, 181 yds, 2 TDs, 2 INTs) struggled for much of the game, finally deciding to show up late in the 3rd and finished out the game by throwing 2 TDs to WR Joe Horn (3 rec., 70 yds, 2 TDs). RB Deuce McAllister (11 carries, 52 yds) had a great yards per carry average of 4.7 but because we were playing from behind the whole game, only finished with 52 yards. Our young defense seemed to be the biggest problem of the day. Despite how bad the offense played, they still gave us a chance to win but the defense gave up 474 total yards and that is just unacceptable. We have too much talent on that side of the ball to let teams steamroll us like that. The lone star on defense was DE Charles Grant (10 tackles, 2 assists, 1.5 sacks), who terrorized Hasselbeck all day long. To make matters worse on defense, we lose CB Mike McKenzie for the next six games with a broken wrist. Injuries: RT Broderick Batch - Broken Foot (Out, 5 Weeks) LB Alfred Fincher - Hyperextended Knee (Probable, 1 Week) CB Mike McKenzie - Broken Wrist (Out, 6 Weeks) Boxscore:

Week 2, 2005
Game Notes: I've never seen a team make a rookie QB look as good as what my defense did against the 49ers. QB Alex Smith (18/28, 271 yds, 4 TDs, 1 INT) was on fire! Smith hit WR Arnaz Battle (6 rec., 119 yds, 2 TDs) for two of his 4 TD passes and WR Jason McAddley (2 rec., 22yds) had a 103-yd kickoff return as San Francisco beat us 38-31. Smith's lone mistake of the day was an ill-timed pass that LB James Allen (5 tackles, 1 INT) picked off and returned 68-yds for a TD and at the time a 17-14 lead. The defense finished the day, having given up another 443 total yards. Again, DE Charles Grant (9 tackles, 1 assist) had a strong day but one man can't do it all. The offense did everything in their power to hang with the 49ers right down to the last play of the game. QB Aaron Brooks (22/32, 286 yds, 1 TD) had a much improved game over the opener. WR Joe Horn (4 rec., 104 yds, 1 TD) and WR Az-Zahir Hakim (7 rec., 82 yds, 1 TD) was the beneficiaries of Brooks good day. Horn now has 3 TD receptions in two games. RB Deuce McAllister (15 carries, 77 yds, 1 TD) added another solid effort. RT Nicky Rose (3/5 key run blocks, 0 SA), the undrafted free agent that we are really high on was 0-1 in key run blocks and two sacks allowed in our first game but played much better in the 2nd game of his career. One injury to note, SS Oscar Prince (2 tackles) who was filling in at CB for the injured CB Mike McKenzie has a stress fracture in his foot and will miss up to seven weeks. Just how bad can our secondary get? Injuries: RT Broderick Batch - Broken Foot (Questionable, 4 Weeks) CB Mike McKenzie - Broken Wrist (Out, 5 Weeks) SS Oscar Prince - Stress Fracture in Foot (Out, 7 Weeks) Boxscore:

Week 3, 2005
Game Notes: Same 'ole song and dance for the Saints. We visited the Rams and again the opposing team put up strong offensive numbers, amassing 429 total yards. It was the 3rd straight that our defense has given up 400+. The Rams offensive attack was lead by QB Marc Bulger (19/26, 284 yds, 3 TDs) and the amazing performance of TE Brandon Manumaleuna (7 rec., 137 yds, 1 TD). With our secondary so beat up, teams have just picked them apart at will and not one of our guys can cover to save their lives. RB Deuce McAllister (14 carries, 93 yds, 1 TD) continued to carry the rock for big chunks of yardage and broke a 55-yd run for our only TD of the game. QB Aaron Brooks (14/24, 186 yds, 1 INT) didn't play bad but did nothing to help us to win the game. WR Joe Horn (5 rec., 75 yds) was held without a TD for the 1st time this season. WR Donte Stallworth (3 rec., 67 yds) had his 1st solid game of the season and even caught a 45-yd pass from Brooks. DE Charles Grant (8 tackles, 2 assists) & LB Courtney Watson (8 tackles, 3 assists) lead the way for the defense, each making 8 tackles. The lack of pressure being put on the opposing QB is not acceptable. We have a lot of talent on the D-Line and we should be controlling the line of scrimmage but we are not. We travel to the (1-2) Arizona Cardinals next, so the team will accept nothing less than our first win. Injuries: RT Broderick Batch - Broken Foot (Questionable, 3 Weeks) CB Mike McKenzie - Broken Wrist (Questionable, 4 Weeks) SS Oscar Prince - Stress Fracture in Foot (Out, 6 Weeks) Boxscore:

Week 4, 2005
Game Notes: We travel to Arizona in Week 4 looking for nothing less then our first win of the season and hold on to beat Arizona 34-31. Quite a shootout as the Cardinals scored 21 unanswered points and actually recovered an onside kick with under a minute to go but failed to get into FG range to tie the game. RB Deuce McAllister (28 carries, 145 yds, 3 TDs) was the star of the game. He was absolutely unstoppable. QB Aaron Brooks (13/22, 218 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT) opened the game by throwing an 80-yd TD pass to WR Joe Horn (4 rec., 119 yds, 1 TD) on the first play of the game and that pretty much set the tempo for the rest of the afternoon. The offensive line played better than what the actually are. LT Wayne Gandy (6/9 key run blocks) and LG Jermane Mayberry (4/8 key run blocks) lead the way for the line. One move that we made before the game really payed off. We had been starting TE Boo Williams (1 rec., 9 yds) but he had only had one catch through the first four games of the season, so we started TE Ernie Conwell (3 rec., 36 yds) and he came up with three huge catches on 3rd down to keep drives alive. The defense listened to my rant about not applying enough pressure and responded with 5 hurries and 1 block. S Dwight Smith (9 tackles, 2 assists) was all over the field, making key stops about every down. DE Charles Grant (7 tackles, 2 assists, 2 sacks) continued what looks to be a possible MVP season. Several new significant injuries of note. We have lost our 2nd (Az-Zahir Hakim and 3rd (Donte' Stallworth) receivers for the next few weeks. So with only three other WRs on the roster, we will have to search for a couple veterans to add to the receiver corps. On tap next is the (0-4) Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A win in that game puts us right back in the hunt for the division lead. Injuries: WR Az-Zahir Hakim - Hyperextended Knee (Out, 3 Weeks) WR Donte' Stallworth - Strained Back (Out, 5 Weeks) RT Broderick Batch - Broken Foot (Probable, 2 Weeks) DT Adam Schwartz - Broken Hand (Probable, 5 Weeks) CB Mike McKenzie - Broken Wrist (Questionable, 3 Weeks) SS Oscar Prince - Stress Fracture in Foot (Out, 5 Weeks) Boxscore:

Week 5, 2005
Game Notes: After picking up our first victory of the season, we returned home to face the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers and crush them 31-6. Tampa Bay managed just two FGs in the game from K Matt Bryant (2/2, 49 yds, 28 yds). The defense played stellar all game long, holding the Bucs to just 274 yards. They also had 9 sacks and two takeaways. DE Darren Howard (5 tackles, 5 assists, 3.5 sacks) and Charles Grant (5 tackeles, 4 assists, 4 sacks) harrassed QB Chris Simms (17/30, 225 yds, 2 INTs) a day and never let the rookie get into a rhythm. Grant now has 39 tackles, 11 assists and 7.5 sacks through our five games.....can you say MVP? S Dwight Smith (8 tackles, 2 assists, 2 INTs) picked off Simms twice on the day. The offense wasn't too bad either! QB Aaron Brooks (15/26, 169 yds, 4 TDs) had his best game of the season and raised his QB rating to 91.4. Brooks hit four different receivers for TDs in the game. RB Deuce McAllister (23 carries, 129 yds) continues to shine and is now 3rd in rushing yards and 2nd in TD runs. The offensive line is owed a huge amount of credit for the seasons Brooks and McAllister are putting together. Through five games, the line has allowed only 5 sacks! Next up the Minnesota Vikings come to town as we look to make it three in a row. Injuries: RB Deuce McAllister - Deep Thigh Bruise (Probable - 1 Week) WR Az-Zahir Hakim - Hyperextended Knee (Questionable, 2 Weeks) WR Donte' Stallworth - Strained Back (Out, 4 Weeks) RT Broderick Batch - Broken Foot (Probable, 1 Week) DT Adam Schwartz - Broken Hand (Probable, 4 Weeks) CB Mike McKenzie - Broken Wrist (Probable, 2 Weeks) SS Oscar Prince - Stress Fracture in Foot (Out, 4 Weeks) Boxscore:

Week 6, 2005
Game Notes: What a game our contest with the Minnesota Vikings turned out to be. With the game tied at 17-17, we took the lead on an 8-yd TD run from RB Deuce McAllister (21 carries, 83 yds, 2 TDs). But a Minnesota FG, a three and out by our offense and a 59-yd pass from QB Daunte Culpepper (25/38, 319 yds, 1 INT) to WR Travis Taylor (6 rec., 133 yds) put the Vikings at the NO19 with :43 left in the game. We were sweating bullets but CB Jason Craft (3 tackles, 2 assists, INT) would pickoff Culpepper in the back of the endzone to seal a 24-20 victory. QB Aaron Brooks (18/27, 226 yds, TD, INT) had a decent game, hitting seven different receivers. One of which was TE Ernie Conwell (5 rec., 58 yds, TD), who has been on fire since being named the starter. McAllister moved into a tie for the most rushing TDs with seven. The offensive line didn't allow a sack and C LeCharles Bentley (4 KRB) opened holes for McAllister all day. The defensive end tandum of DE Darren Howard (5 tackles, 2 assists, 2 sacks, 1 hurry) and DE Charles Grant (3 tackles, 2 assists, 3 hurries) continued to wreck havoc on opposing QBs. LB Courtney Watson (11 tackles, 1 assist) has been a pleasant surprise, recording 43 tackles, 11 assists and 1 sack through our first six games. Well on his way to a 100+ tackle season. We will try to keep the current win streak alive as we travel to Oakland next. Injuries: WR Devery Henderson - High Ankle Sprain (Out, 18 Weeks) WR Az-Zahir Hakim - Hyperextended Knee (Probable, 1 Week) WR Donte' Stallworth - Strained Back (Out, 3 Weeks) RT Nicky Rose - Strained Triceps Muscle (Questionable, 3 Weeks) DT Adam Schwartz - Broken Hand (Probable, 3 Weeks) LB Alfred Fincher - Herniated Disk (Out, 5 Weeks) CB Mike McKenzie - Broken Wrist (Probable, 1 Week) SS Oscar Prince - Stress Fracture in Foot (Out, 4 Weeks) SS Fred Urbanchek - Sprained Knee (Questionable, 3 Weeks) Boxscore:

Week 7, 2005
Game Notes: We headed to Oakland riding a three game winning streak and proceed to hold the Raiders to 4 FGs from K Sebastian Janikowski (4/4 FGs). The offense looked sluggish for much of the day without our top WRs in the lineup. QB Aaron Brooks (18/31, 229 yds, TD, 3 INTs) had a bad game but RB Deuce McAllister (20 carries, 86 yds, 2 TDs) and TE Ernie Conwell (7 rec., 94 yds) carried the offense on this day. McAllister's 2 TD runs gave him the league lead. Conwell was named Player of the Game for his performance. RG Harold Farr (3 KRB) helped open holes for McAllister and the line only allowed one sack. The defense played a solid game but nowhere near how they have played the last couple. DE Charles Grant (7 tackles, 1 assist) wasn't much of a factor for the first time this season but DE Darren Howard (4 tackles, 1 sack) notched another sack. S Dwight Smith (9 tackles, 1 assist) continues to be a tackling machine, as does LB Courtney Watson (6 tackles, 1 assist, INT). Watson, Smith and Grant each have 49 tackles through seven games. Again we were hit by the injury bug, this time losing WR Michael Lewis and P Mitch Berger. Lucky WR Az-Zahir Hakim is 100% and will return after the off week. We will enjoy our bye week as we get prepared for a three game stretch against the rest of the AFC West. Injuries: WR Devery Henderson - High Ankle Sprain (Out, 17 Weeks) WR Michael Lewis - Hyperextended Knee (Out, 3 Weeks) WR Donte' Stallworth - Strained Back (Questionable, 2 Weeks) RT Nicky Rose - Strained Triceps Muscle (Questionable, 2 Weeks) P Mitch Berger - Tonsilitis (Out, 2 Weeks) DT Adam Schwartz - Broken Hand (Probable, 2 Weeks) LB Alfred Fincher - Herniated Disk (Doubtful, 4 Weeks) SS Oscar Prince - Stress Fracture in Foot (Doubtful, 3 Weeks) SS Fred Urbanchek - Sprained Knee (Questionable, 2 Weeks) Boxscore:

Week 9, 2005
Game Notes: We spent the bye week trying to recover from some of the various injuries that has plagued the team all season so far. We headed to San Diego riding a four-game winning streak and knowing that in order to make it five we would have to stop the Charger ground game. The defense did just that, holding RB LaDainian Tomlinson (21 carries, 87 yds) out of the endzone and limiting San Diego to just two FGs from K Nate Kaeding (2/2 FGs). This was the 2nd consecutive game that the opposing team failed to find the endzone and 3rd out of the last four. WR Joe Horn (7 rec., 129 yds, TD) and RB Deuce McAllister (21 carries, 84 yds, 2 TDs) carried the offensive load. QB Aaron Brooks (18/28, 244 yds, 2 TDs, 2 INTs) had a decent game but has all of a sudden started throwing some picks. WR Az-Zahir Hakim (6 rec., 66 yds) returned from injury and contributed a little on offense. With P Mitch Berger still out with tonsilitis, K John Carney (1/1 FGs, 4/4 XPs) handled the kicking duties as well as the punting duties (5 punts, 44.6 AVG, 4 IN20). The defense held San Diego to just 234 total yards. DE Charles Grant (6 tackles, 0.5 sack), DT Rodney Leisle (6 tackles, 1 assist, 0.5 sack) and DE Darren Howard (1 tackle, 1 sack) combined for 3 sacks and five hurries in the game. S Dwight Smith (3 tackles, INT) and CB Jason Craft (4 tackles, INT) each had picks. Only one new injury, as Leisle tore some cartilage in his knee and will miss 4 weeks. Leisle had been filling in for DT Adam Schwartz and would have remained the starter after Schwartz returned from injury because of his solid play. But now Schwartz will resume his role until Leisle returns. Injuries: WR Devery Henderson - High Ankle Sprain (Out, 14 Weeks) WR Michael Lewis - Hyperextended Knee (Probable, 1 Week) RT Nicky Rose - Strained Triceps Muscle (Probable, 1 Week) DT Rodney Leslie - Torn Knee Cartilage (Out, 4 Weeks) DT Adam Schwartz - Broken Hand (Probable, 1 Week) LB Alfred Fincher - Herniated Disk (Questionable, 2 Weeks) SS Oscar Prince - Stress Fracture in Foot (Probable, 1 Week) Boxscore:

Having reached the halfway point of the season, I thought I would give a little analysis of how the first half of the season went. At the start of the year, we had low expectations. We knew that we had very good talent on defense but it was a little wet behind the ears. On offense we saw a few guys that could contribute but knew that the offense was going to be a work in progress. After starting out 0-3, our low expectations became even lower. Then we faced Arizona and got the monkey off our back and before you knew it, we were riding a five game winning streak at the halfway point. Currently we are (5-3), 1 game behind Carolina for the division lead. We still have five games left within the division, so a division championship isn't out of the question. As I stated before, we had low expectations for our offense. QB Aaron Brooks (1739 yds, 13 TDs) has performed remarkably and has showed no signs of struggling with the new system. With the lack of standout talent on offense, RB Deuce McAllister (749 yds, 11 TDs) was expected to carry a huge amount of the offensive load and responded with a solid first half. WR Joe Horn (34 rec., 662 yds, 6 TDs) came up with big play after big play to help us to were we are and has developed a solid relationship with Brooks. Our other WRs Az-Zahir Hakim, Donte' Stallworth & Devery Henderson were plagued by a variety of injuries during the first eight games and have each only seen limited action so far. TE Ernie Conwell (20 rec., 240 yds, 2 TDs) was beat out in camp for the starting TE job by TE Boo Williams (6 rec., 70 yds). Williams struggled early, only grabbing three receptions through the first five games and he was benched. Conwell responded big when given the chance to start and we haven't looked back. A big part of our offensive success so far must be credited to our offensive line. This was the biggest question mark on the offensive side of the ball and we ended up starting three veterans and two undrafted rookies. They all five responded, only allowing six sacks through eight games and opening big holes for McAllister. The defense that we have assembled is a crazy talented group that is going to dominate offenses for years to come and have already started down that path this season. Our bookend defensive ends, DE Darren Howard (26 tackles, 12 assists, 8 sacks) and DE Charles Grant (55 tackles, 15 assists, 8 sacks) have combined for 26 hurries. Opposing QBs have been frustrated by these two all season long. Our DTs are young and raw but have performed well, about like expected. Our linebacker corps was a concern area in my mind before the season started because of their lack of ability to play the run. The group has done a better than expected job, lead by the play of LB Courtney Watson (53 tackles, 16 assists, 1 sack) and LB James Allen (42 tackles, 13 assists, 2 sacks). Both could eclipse 100+ tackles, along with Grant and that would be amazing. Early on during our three game losing streak to start the season, our secondary was giving up huge chunks of yards through the air. I knew with the talent we had back there, that is was only a matter of time before they started playing up to their talent. CB Mike McKenzie got off to a slow start and was injured, ending up missing most of the first eight games. Without McKenzie, we were really thin at CB but CB Jason Craft (35 tackles, 9 assists, 2 INTs) played WAY beyond his talent and kept us in a lot of games. S Dwight Smith (52 tackles, 14 assists, 3 INTs) also got off to a slow start but over about the last four games has become a tackling machine and is starting to play up to the level we expect. S Josh Bullocks (23 tackles, 13 assists) is only a rookie and has performed like one. Overall, we are overjoyed in the way the team has performed up to this point. No way would I have believed that we would be (5-3) at this point in the season. Injuries have been our biggest concern in the first half and will probably continue to be a thorn in our side. If we can stay healthy, I would be willing to say that we could finish 9-7 or 10-6. However, that is a BIG IF! Last edited by Man_In_Black : 04-02-2006 at 11:04 AM. |

Week 10, 2005
Game Notes: As the second half of the season got underway, the Chiefs came to New Orleans sporting a 5-2 record and leading the AFC West. Things got off to a really bad start as we turn the ball over five times on our first five possessions. That lead to 17 unanswered points before we even knew what happened. QB Aaron Brooks (13/26, 234 yds, TD, 5 INTs) had a really bad game and his play ultimately cost us this game. We eventually got things rolling and starting clawing our way back. Brooks threw a TD and RB Deuce McAllister (20 carries, 115 yds, 2 TDs) rushed for another couple scores in the 4th quarter to pull the score to 27-21 with 6:15 to play. After our defense forced a punt on the next Chiefs possession, Brooks would hit WR Joe Horn (2 rec., 59 yds, TD) for a 52-yd gain but we ended up settling for a 19-yd FG from K John Carney (1/1 FGs, 3/3 XPs). Again the defense would hold the Chiefs and we got one last shot with 1:19 to play. Again, first play goes for 43-yds to Az-Zahir Hakim (4 rec., 94 yds) and we are feeling good about our chances. On the next play, Brooks would throw his 5th interception of the game and that would end our five game winning streak, 27-24. I can't be too upset by the outcome because the Chiefs have a great offense and to be able to comeback from 17 down to have a chance to win speaks volumes for where this team is at this point. Our defense never really let QB Trent Green (16/37, 165 yds) get into a rhythm, defending nine passes and hurrying the QB seven times. DE Charles Grant (6 tackles, 1 assist, 1 sack) added his 9th sack of the season. RG Harold Farr (5 KRB) one of two undrafted rookies starting on our offensive line, was having a great season and had a great game but is now lost for five weeks with a broken clavicle. Injuries are really starting to piss me off! Good news is that Carolina lost, so we remain only one game back as we prepare for Denver. Injuries: WR Devery Henderson - High Ankle Sprain (Out, 12 Weeks) RG Harold Farr - Broken Clavicle (Out, 5 Weeks) DT Rodney Leslie - Torn Knee Cartilage (Out, 3 Weeks) LB Alfred Fincher - Herniated Disk (Probable, 1 Week) LB Courtney Watson - Hyperextended Elbow (Doubtful, 2 Weeks) Boxscore:

Week 11, 2005
Game Notes: The Denver Broncos rolled into town riding a six game losing streak and things didn't change much, except for them picking up another loss as we give them an Orange Crush, 37-20. RB Deuce McAllister (33 carries, 209 yds, 3 TDs) was the difference maker, scoring three 1-yd TDs and a catching a 3-yd TD pass from QB Aaron Brooks (20/30, 221 yds, 2 TDs, INT). Brooks rebounded nicely from his horrible performance against the Chiefs last week. Brooks also threw a TD pass to WR Joe Horn (6 rec., 99 yds, TD). McAllister's 209 yards on the ground gave him the Single-Game record, surpassing RB Steven Jackson of the St. Louis Rams, who had 202 yards earlier in the year against the Arizona Cardinals. The defense played another solid game, as DE Darren Howard (6 tackles, 3 assists, 2 sacks) and DE Charles Grant (4 tackles, 1 assist, 1.5 sacks) dominated yet again. Starting to become a broken record but that will be on hold for awhile, because Grant was injured at the end of the game and will miss up to four weeks. Two straight division games next...it is do or die! Injuries: WR Devery Henderson - High Ankle Sprain (Out, 11 Weeks) RG Harold Farr - Broken Clavicle (Out, 4 Weeks) DE Charles Grant - Severe Wrist Sprain (Out, 4 Weeks) DT Rodney Leslie - Torn Knee Cartilage (Doubtful, 2 Weeks) LB Courtney Watson - Hyperextended Elbow (Probable, 1 Week) CB Mike McKenzie - Strained Triceps Muscle (Questionable, 2 Weeks) Boxscore:

Week 12, 2005
Game Notes: Things get off to a rough start, as we start a five out of six game stretch against division opponents. Our injuries finally caught up with us this game. The defense couldn't get any pressure on QB Michael Vick (20/27, 194 yds, 4 TDs), especially with DE Charles Grant out of the lineup. Vick lead the Falcon offense up and down the field at will and win this one 35-27. The Falcons defense did a great job of limiting QB Aaron Brooks (15/30, 279 yds, TD) and had him frustrated for much of the day. RB Deuce McAllister (14 carries, 76 yds, 2 TDs) did his part to make it closer than what it actually was. McAllister continues to be a force at scoring TDs. With his two in this game, he now has 18 on the season. WR Joe Horn (5 rec., 97 yds) continues his strong season as he is approaching 1,000 yds receiving. LB Courtney Watson (13 tackles, 3 assists) & S Dwight Smith (11 tackles, 3 assists) both had solid games on defense, despite the letdown of the loss. Injuries: TE Ernie Conwell - Sprained Thumb (Probable, 3 Weeks) WR Devery Henderson - High Ankle Sprain (Out, 10 Weeks) C LeCharles Bentley - Viral Infection (Questionable, 2 Weeks) RG Harold Farr - Broken Clavicle (Out, 3 Weeks) RT Antoine Rivers - Bruised Shoulder (Probable, 1 Week) DE Charles Grant - Severe Wrist Sprain (Doubtful, 3 Weeks) DT Rodney Leslie - Torn Knee Cartilage (Probable, 1 Week) CB Mike McKenzie - Strained Triceps Muscle (Probable, 1 Week) Boxscore:

Week 13, 2005
Game Notes: Coming off a divisional loss to the Atlanta Falcons, our game against the NFC South leading Carolina Panthers was a big game and one we really needed to win. It was a shootout from the start and Carolina kicked a FG with :05 remaining to send the game to overtime. They won the toss to start OT and marched downfield and K John Kasey (3/4 FGs, 4/4 XPs) would win it for them with a 23-yd FG, 30-27. This loss is a tough one to swallow. After looking so promising, we have now lost three out of the last four and the injuries continue to mount. QB Aaron Brooks (16/29, 187 yds, 2 TDs, INT) had a good game in leading the comeback in the 4th to take the lead at one point but was injured with a hyperextended knee and is doubtful for the next few games. RB Deuce McAllister (16 carries, 45 yds) was our leading rusher and receiver in the game. As with Brooks, McAllister suffered a broken ankle and will miss the next six weeks. WR Joe Horn (3 rec., 32 yds, TD) was silent for most of the day but did manage his 9th TD of the season. The offensive line did a horrible job of opening holes and allowed two sacks in the game. Our biggest problem in our last four games has been the lack of pass rush we've been getting. With DE Charles Grant still out, no one has stepped up and DE Darren Howard (7 tackles, 1 assist, 1 sack) has seen lots of double teams. Second year LB Courtney Watson (2 tackles) was continuing to have a great year but was lost to injury with a separated shoulder. S Dwight Smith (12 tackles, 3 assists) has taken over as the leading tackler on the season and had another great game. At 6-6 things are looking pretty bleak at this point, especially with all the injuries. So from here on out unless a player is listed as out, they will be playing. Making the playoffs is just too important. Injuries: QB Aaron Brooks - Hyperextended Knee (Doubtful, 3 Weeks) RB Deuce McAllister - Broken Ankle (Out, 6 Weeks) TE Ernie Conwell - Sprained Thumb (Probable, 2 Weeks) WR Devery Henderson - High Ankle Sprain (Out, 9 Weeks) WR Az-Zahir Hakim - Sprained Ankle (Questionable, 1 Week) C LeCharles Bentley - Viral Infection (Probable, 1 Week) RG Harold Farr - Broken Clavicle (Probable, 1 Week) DE Charles Grant - Severe Wrist Sprain (Questionable, 2 Weeks) LB Courtney Watson - Separated Shoulder (Out, 5 Weeks) Boxscore:

Week 14, 2005
Game Notes: With four games remaining during the regular season, our trip to Dallas was an important one. The defense showed up to play, holding the Cowboys to just 13 points, all of those coming on the final two drives against the 2nd string defense. CB Mike McKenzie (5 tackles, 2 INTs) and S Dwight Smith (4 tackles, 2 assists, 3 INTs) picked off QB Drew Bledsoe (21/46, 221 yds, TD, 5 INTs) five times and kept Dallas' offense in check all day. DE Charles Grant (3 tackles) returned to the lineup but wasn't much of a factor. DE Darren Howard (3 tackles, 1 sack, 2 hurries) added another sack to raise his season total to 12.5. The offense had a lot of stalled drives but K John Carney (3/4 FGs, 3/3 XPs) was on top of his game, just as he has been all season. Despite playing hurt, QB Aaron Brooks (13/22, 194 yds, TD) had a good game and played mistake free football. RB Antowain Smith (28 carries, 102 yds, TD) started in place of the injured RB Deuce McAllister and put my mind at ease in regards to our running game. WR Joe Horn (6 rec., 83 yds, TD) continued his All-Pro season and Dallas didn't have an answer for him. No new significant injuries was a plus. Now it is on to Tampa Bay for three straight divisional games to finish out the season. Injuries: QB Aaron Brooks - Hyperextended Knee (Questionable, 2 Weeks) RB Deuce McAllister - Broken Ankle (Out, 5 Weeks) TE Ernie Conwell - Sprained Thumb (Probable, 1 Week) WR Devery Henderson - High Ankle Sprain (Questionable, 8 Weeks) DE Charles Grant - Severe Wrist Sprain (Probable, 1 Week) LB Courtney Watson - Separated Shoulder (Out, 4 Weeks) LB Colby Bockwoldt - Severe Anxiety (Probable, Unknown) Boxscore:
