FOF2k4: New Orleans Saints - Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler
  Introduction In a football season unlike any NFL team has ever faced, the New Orleans Saints continued to do what they have always done best: lose game after game. When Hurricane Katrina devastated their hometown of New Orleans on the eve of their first game of the regular season, many league officials wondered if the Saints organization would even be able to field a team, and serious questions remained as to where and when the storm-crossed team would play. With the Superdome shattered by high winds and the streets of their corporate headquarters flooded, owner Tom Benson examined the options and bravely decided to abandon the city, his season ticket holders, and the fans, and flee to San Antonio, desperately pledging to move the team there permanently in an attempt to grab as much money off the table as quickly as possible under the cover of the nation's greatest natural disaster. With players and staff separated from their homes and families indefinitely, the team demonstrated incredible resolve in the face of adversity. Off the field, players made a point of using days off to visit fans scattered by the storm in shelters in Houston, Atlanta, and Baton Rouge. On the field, the Saints continued to prove the naysayers wrong and played with a consistency and resolve that have impressed many across the nation. Sporting an ignominious 3-13 record, the Saints bounced back to their usual level of performance and played as if Hurricane Katrina never happened. "Watching them was sheer torture," said displaced fan John Maurice. "It's like the whole team reached down deep inside and worked to play the kind of football that we have all depended on year in and year out. I've never been prouder to be a Saints fan. I know that no matter what I can always count on them to go out there every Sunday and take it up the ass." Pro Bowl wide receiver Joe Horn was modest about his team's achievements this year. "I don't want to make a big deal out of it. We knew that there were a lot of fans out there who were counting on us, and we didn't want to let them down. I think a lot of people if they turned on their TVs and saw us racking up big wins and heading to the playoffs would be confused and disturbed. Instead we go out there and play Saints football just like we do every year." When questioned about what he thinks of the Saints fans unofficially referring to 2005 as "Saints Torture Time," Horn was self-effacing. "We don't worry about all that stuff. Sure, torture is the hot thing these days, but we just try to go out there and be consistent and do the little things the fans count on: dropping balls, lining up offsides, pissing away leads, whatever it takes. Now if you want to be all trendy and call that torture, well, I can't argue with you." Aside from visiting with fans, many of the team leaders have also lent their time and talent to a fund-raising song and video earmarked to raise money for hurricane relief. Top New Orleans musical talents Branford Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr., and rapper Master P have recorded a rap song and video with team members called "The Saints Second Line Torture Shuffle." The song has already raised over thirty thousand dollars for storm relief as fans have snapped up copies of the video that features game footage of the team self-destructing on the football field intercut with shots of players being playfully tortured by whip-wielding fans in the streets of the French Quarter. Despite all the media fanfare that goes with another dismal losing season, quarterback Aaron Brooks remains firmly committed to doing his job and helping the community as well. Recently at a hospital visit in Shreveport, Brooks chatted with a group of young fans. When Michael Green, a six year old fan recovering from a broken leg, asked if Brooks thought they could keep it up and pull out a big loss on Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons, the quarterback smiled and guaranteed a defeat. As the children cheered, Brooks handed out autographed footballs and told Green, "We're gonna lose big, Michael, and I'm gonna throw an interception for you and for each of your three brothers, too." The pediatric ward exploded in cheers. Being a Saints fan is torture, and they wouldn't have it any other way. "Laissez les bon temps rouler" a.k.a "Let the good times roll!" [This is a fictional dynasty that's main goal will be to right the New Orleans Saints, starting with a replay of the 2005 season and hopefully leading them to a Super Bowl appearance sometime in the foreseeable future!] |

Executive Vice-President/General Manager Grant Romero has proven to be a natural for the legion of responsibilities that come with directing the Saints toward that objective. He will oversee all aspects of the club's football operations, including coaching, player personnel, salary cap management, contract negotiations, equipment, video, athletic training and public relations. Season Preview
Preseason Roster New Orleans Saints Roster, Scout Overview Looking at the initial roster that I've been given to work with, things don't look very good. The team has a lot of dead weight in the form of veteran players with minimal or no talent and huge bonus money tied to them for the next two to three seasons. My first order of business will be to rumage through the available free agents and maybe sign a few undrafted kids that look like the might have a future. Then I will need to decide who stays and who goes in the way of veterans. I don't mind dead cap room for this year but would like to stay away from the future. After sitting down with the coaching staff and looking over current players scouting reports, it was obvious that we have a lot of talent (especially on defense) but that we also have a lot of dead weight taking up roster spots that could be held by somone of some use. So after looking over the initial roster, I made the tough (but easy) decision of parting ways with the following players:

The organization saw nothing in any of the players that would warrant keeping them on the roster for this season or next. Overall, we are looking at $3,740,000 lost cap room this year and $5,020,000 next season. Looks bad on paper but it is a small price to pay to rid the franchise of the dead weight that was dragging it down. After the players were notified of their release, we were able start the tidous task of sifting through hundreds of scouting reports on the available undrafted free agent rookies. After spending two days working out our targeted players, we signed the following players to one-year contracts: QB Junior Barlow (12/45) - kid looks to have a solid future as a backup QB; good ability at all passing distances; excellent timing rating and kick holding. QB Jerome Maeser (11/44) - not quite as good as Barlow but has decent potential and high volatility (84); excellent kick holding ability and will be the primary holder this season. LG Lincoln Clark (12/40) - just a body; decent future as a backup possibly. LG Austin Hall (17/42) - just a body but one with very high volatility (86); decent future as a backup maybe even a starter. RG Harold Farr (13/42) - a kid that will be thrust into a starting role this season due to limited guard talent; decent potential, enough that if he develops could become a decent starter. LT Nicky Rose (14/53) - couldn't believe that we were able to find this kid in the free agency pool; looks to have great future potential at run and pass blocking; no blocking strength and decent future endurance. LT Antoine Rivers (22/47) - similar to Rose, except with high volatility (81); could possibly start down the road. RT Broderick Batch (18/49) - great future potential as a run blocker; low potential everwhere else but has a 93 volatility rating. DT Brant Griffin (21/47) - kid has a great future from the end position; little light at 289 pounds for a DT, so we will look to get him some playing time from the DE position; great future potential in run defense, technique and strength. DT Adam Schwartz (18/51) - has all the abilities we look for in a solid DT; this 6-4, 323 pounder has great potential at stuffing the run and pass rush technique; only limited by the amount of young talent ahead of him on the depth chart. LB Dennis Randle (21/47) - we had very little talent at linebacker and the addition of Randle should help that; projected to be our starting WLB to start the season; no run stopping ability at all but solid across the board everywhere else. CB Wayne Gillespie (13/41) - decent future as a backup; might have to start due to lack of talent at the CB position; should battle it out with veteran CB Jason Craft for the starting role but we will be watching other teams releases for a chance to upgrate. CB Howie Lindsay (12/34) - just a body primarily; decent bars might make him a decent backup one day but mainly signed him for his high volatility and a hopefully eventual boom down the road. SS Oscar Prince (20/55) - a love safeties and when we saw this guy on the free agent market, we had to have him; good future in all areas; should be an excellent backup/spot starter for us given the amount of talent we already have at the position. SS Fred Urbanchek (23/55) - another guy we just had to have; future similar to Prince's except better ability to pick off the QB; again should be an excellent backup/spot starter for us. Before the season gets underway we decide to add a couple free agents to round out our preseason roster:

We finish the preseason with a 3-1 record, somewhat surprising considering the amount of playing time that my starters actually spent on the field. There were definitely some surprises during preseason, players that were not expected to contribute or only on a limited basis actually making a case for playing time. Game Notes: Not exactly the way we invisioned opening the season, as Seattle ran all over us and won 24-16. RB Shaun Alexander (34 carries, 180 yds) and QB Matt Hasselbeck (19/26, 294 yds, 3 TDs) had great games to carry the Seahawks. Our guys looked sluggish all game long, probably the lack of playing time the starters saw during the preseason. QB Aaron Brooks (11/29, 181 yds, 2 TDs, 2 INTs) struggled for much of the game, finally deciding to show up late in the 3rd and finished out the game by throwing 2 TDs to WR Joe Horn (3 rec., 70 yds, 2 TDs). RB Deuce McAllister (11 carries, 52 yds) had a great yards per carry average of 4.7 but because we were playing from behind the whole game, only finished with 52 yards. Our young defense seemed to be the biggest problem of the day. Despite how bad the offense played, they still gave us a chance to win but the defense gave up 474 total yards and that is just unacceptable. We have too much talent on that side of the ball to let teams steamroll us like that. The lone star on defense was DE Charles Grant (10 tackles, 2 assists, 1.5 sacks), who terrorized Hasselbeck all day long. To make matters worse on defense, we lose CB Mike McKenzie for the next six games with a broken wrist. Game Notes: I've never seen a team make a rookie QB look as good as what my defense did against the 49ers. QB Alex Smith (18/28, 271 yds, 4 TDs, 1 INT) was on fire! Smith hit WR Arnaz Battle (6 rec., 119 yds, 2 TDs) for two of his 4 TD passes and WR Jason McAddley (2 rec., 22yds) had a 103-yd kickoff return as San Francisco beat us 38-31. Smith's lone mistake of the day was an ill-timed pass that LB James Allen (5 tackles, 1 INT) picked off and returned 68-yds for a TD and at the time a 17-14 lead. The defense finished the day, having given up another 443 total yards. Again, DE Charles Grant (9 tackles, 1 assist) had a strong day but one man can't do it all. The offense did everything in their power to hang with the 49ers right down to the last play of the game. QB Aaron Brooks (22/32, 286 yds, 1 TD) had a much improved game over the opener. WR Joe Horn (4 rec., 104 yds, 1 TD) and WR Az-Zahir Hakim (7 rec., 82 yds, 1 TD) was the beneficiaries of Brooks good day. Horn now has 3 TD receptions in two games. RB Deuce McAllister (15 carries, 77 yds, 1 TD) added another solid effort. RT Nicky Rose (3/5 key run blocks, 0 SA), the undrafted free agent that we are really high on was 0-1 in key run blocks and two sacks allowed in our first game but played much better in the 2nd game of his career. One injury to note, SS Oscar Prince (2 tackles) who was filling in at CB for the injured CB Mike McKenzie has a stress fracture in his foot and will miss up to seven weeks. Just how bad can our secondary get? Game Notes: Same 'ole song and dance for the Saints. We visited the Rams and again the opposing team put up strong offensive numbers, amassing 429 total yards. It was the 3rd straight that our defense has given up 400+. The Rams offensive attack was lead by QB Marc Bulger (19/26, 284 yds, 3 TDs) and the amazing performance of TE Brandon Manumaleuna (7 rec., 137 yds, 1 TD). With our secondary so beat up, teams have just picked them apart at will and not one of our guys can cover to save their lives. RB Deuce McAllister (14 carries, 93 yds, 1 TD) continued to carry the rock for big chunks of yardage and broke a 55-yd run for our only TD of the game. QB Aaron Brooks (14/24, 186 yds, 1 INT) didn't play bad but did nothing to help us to win the game. WR Joe Horn (5 rec., 75 yds) was held without a TD for the 1st time this season. WR Donte Stallworth (3 rec., 67 yds) had his 1st solid game of the season and even caught a 45-yd pass from Brooks. DE Charles Grant (8 tackles, 2 assists) & LB Courtney Watson (8 tackles, 3 assists) lead the way for the defense, each making 8 tackles. The lack of pressure being put on the opposing QB is not acceptable. We have a lot of talent on the D-Line and we should be controlling the line of scrimmage but we are not. We travel to the (1-2) Arizona Cardinals next, so the team will accept nothing less than our first win. Game Notes: We travel to Arizona in Week 4 looking for nothing less then our first win of the season and hold on to beat Arizona 34-31. Quite a shootout as the Cardinals scored 21 unanswered points and actually recovered an onside kick with under a minute to go but failed to get into FG range to tie the game. RB Deuce McAllister (28 carries, 145 yds, 3 TDs) was the star of the game. He was absolutely unstoppable. QB Aaron Brooks (13/22, 218 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT) opened the game by throwing an 80-yd TD pass to WR Joe Horn (4 rec., 119 yds, 1 TD) on the first play of the game and that pretty much set the tempo for the rest of the afternoon. The offensive line played better than what the actually are. LT Wayne Gandy (6/9 key run blocks) and LG Jermane Mayberry (4/8 key run blocks) lead the way for the line. One move that we made before the game really payed off. We had been starting TE Boo Williams (1 rec., 9 yds) but he had only had one catch through the first four games of the season, so we started TE Ernie Conwell (3 rec., 36 yds) and he came up with three huge catches on 3rd down to keep drives alive. The defense listened to my rant about not applying enough pressure and responded with 5 hurries and 1 block. S Dwight Smith (9 tackles, 2 assists) was all over the field, making key stops about every down. DE Charles Grant (7 tackles, 2 assists, 2 sacks) continued what looks to be a possible MVP season. Several new significant injuries of note. We have lost our 2nd (Az-Zahir Hakim and 3rd (Donte' Stallworth) receivers for the next few weeks. So with only three other WRs on the roster, we will have to search for a couple veterans to add to the receiver corps. On tap next is the (0-4) Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A win in that game puts us right back in the hunt for the division lead. Game Notes: After picking up our first victory of the season, we returned home to face the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers and crush them 31-6. Tampa Bay managed just two FGs in the game from K Matt Bryant (2/2, 49 yds, 28 yds). The defense played stellar all game long, holding the Bucs to just 274 yards. They also had 9 sacks and two takeaways. DE Darren Howard (5 tackles, 5 assists, 3.5 sacks) and Charles Grant (5 tackeles, 4 assists, 4 sacks) harrassed QB Chris Simms (17/30, 225 yds, 2 INTs) a day and never let the rookie get into a rhythm. Grant now has 39 tackles, 11 assists and 7.5 sacks through our five games.....can you say MVP? S Dwight Smith (8 tackles, 2 assists, 2 INTs) picked off Simms twice on the day. The offense wasn't too bad either! QB Aaron Brooks (15/26, 169 yds, 4 TDs) had his best game of the season and raised his QB rating to 91.4. Brooks hit four different receivers for TDs in the game. RB Deuce McAllister (23 carries, 129 yds) continues to shine and is now 3rd in rushing yards and 2nd in TD runs. The offensive line is owed a huge amount of credit for the seasons Brooks and McAllister are putting together. Through five games, the line has allowed only 5 sacks! Game Notes: What a game our contest with the Minnesota Vikings turned out to be. With the game tied at 17-17, we took the lead on an 8-yd TD run from RB Deuce McAllister (21 carries, 83 yds, 2 TDs). But a Minnesota FG, a three and out by our offense and a 59-yd pass from QB Daunte Culpepper (25/38, 319 yds, 1 INT) to WR Travis Taylor (6 rec., 133 yds) put the Vikings at the NO19 with :43 left in the game. We were sweating bullets but CB Jason Craft (3 tackles, 2 assists, INT) would pickoff Culpepper in the back of the endzone to seal a 24-20 victory. QB Aaron Brooks (18/27, 226 yds, TD, INT) had a decent game, hitting seven different receivers. One of which was TE Ernie Conwell (5 rec., 58 yds, TD), who has been on fire since being named the starter. McAllister moved into a tie for the most rushing TDs with seven. The offensive line didn't allow a sack and C LeCharles Bentley (4 KRB) opened holes for McAllister all day. The defensive end tandum of DE Darren Howard (5 tackles, 2 assists, 2 sacks, 1 hurry) and DE Charles Grant (3 tackles, 2 assists, 3 hurries) continued to wreck havoc on opposing QBs. LB Courtney Watson (11 tackles, 1 assist) has been a pleasant surprise, recording 43 tackles, 11 assists and 1 sack through our first six games. Well on his way to a 100+ tackle season. We will try to keep the current win streak alive as we travel to Oakland next. Game Notes: We headed to Oakland riding a three game winning streak and proceed to hold the Raiders to 4 FGs from K Sebastian Janikowski (4/4 FGs). The offense looked sluggish for much of the day without our top WRs in the lineup. QB Aaron Brooks (18/31, 229 yds, TD, 3 INTs) had a bad game but RB Deuce McAllister (20 carries, 86 yds, 2 TDs) and TE Ernie Conwell (7 rec., 94 yds) carried the offense on this day. McAllister's 2 TD runs gave him the league lead. Conwell was named Player of the Game for his performance. RG Harold Farr (3 KRB) helped open holes for McAllister and the line only allowed one sack. The defense played a solid game but nowhere near how they have played the last couple. DE Charles Grant (7 tackles, 1 assist) wasn't much of a factor for the first time this season but DE Darren Howard (4 tackles, 1 sack) notched another sack. S Dwight Smith (9 tackles, 1 assist) continues to be a tackling machine, as does LB Courtney Watson (6 tackles, 1 assist, INT). Watson, Smith and Grant each have 49 tackles through seven games. Again we were hit by the injury bug, this time losing WR Michael Lewis and P Mitch Berger. Lucky WR Az-Zahir Hakim is 100% and will return after the off week. We will enjoy our bye week as we get prepared for a three game stretch against the rest of the AFC West.
