If the Cincinnati Bengals' offseason couldn't get any more strange, Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson may have added a new chapter just before the regular season.

According to Miami radio station 790 The Ticket, which is in Johnson's hometown, the receiver has legally changed his last name to "Ocho Cinco." Johnson's -- sorry -- Ocho Cinco's reported name change has been rumored in NFL circles for weeks, and according to the station today, it's official.

Johnson forewarned the public that a major surprise was coming during a recent interview with Chris McKendry on ESPN's SportsCenter.

"A lot of people look at Chad Johnson and say he's crazy and he does a lot of stuff, but I don't think people really understand how smart I really am," Johnson said. "So come Sept. 7, I believe when we play the Baltimore Ravens, I think that's the game, there's a surprise for everybody -- for everybody. When I say something, it is what it is, just enjoy it. Because it's going to last 16 weeks, plus some more."

Could this be it? If the report is correct he should be able to wear his nickname on the back of his jersey without penalty, which he's wanted to do for quite some time.

The media also would have to refer to him as Chad Ocho Cinco from this point on.

Sounds a little strange, but nothing is too outlandish for No. 85 or the Bengals these days.

yer not alone at all. I love what Chad can bring to the field, I just tihnk he's too wrapped up in the extra-curriculars to really do his job to the level he professes that he can.

He's always talked about a 2000 yard recieving year, well he'd best start actually catching the rock and stop running his yap.

If the players on the Bengals all played the way Houshmanzadeh has they'd be freaking incredible. Sometimes I think they just do "enough" and not "everything it takes"

Its fine to love the game AND to make it fun, try DOING your JOB first though

Johnson's antics generally come at times when he's either not producing or is being criticized for something he did or didn't do on the field. As much as I know and believe he's one of the best, I've still yet to see him totally dominate a single football game.

He's had 2 200+ yard games, the Bengals lost both. I guess what I mean by dominant game is one where he simply takes over and turns it into a win. When the other team simply can't keep up with what he's doing.

I know he's played great, but far more often it seems like he plays...good, when he COULD be playing great. Not that he's taking plays off or dogging it, but when you really expect him to make THAT catch, the one that really turns the game around, it just doesn't seem to happen.

Maybe its just me, but I always come away from the games dissapointed with OCHO DORKO.

Johnson, and for that matter T.O., are good to great players, but their style is more "me-first" rather than helping to lift a team to the next level. I'm sure part of that stems from ego problems in the locker room that affects team chemistry.

Thats quite true, and added to that the fact that the truly GREAT players make the plays that need to be made when the team needs them.

Rice in Super Bowl 23 made a huge catch and run in the final drive that probably saved that game for the niners. Michael Irvan made numerous catches that saved Dallas' ass during his career, Carter for the Vikings, Andre Reed for those Bills teams that dominated most of a decade. These guys made everyone ar0ound them better and when it came to crunch time they made THE play that helped the team win games.

I haven't seen that yet from Chad. I WANT to, I desperately want to see him be that guy. I think he can be.

I'll give you that he hasn't always played well in big games, but that's different from saying he's never dominated a game. There isn't much more a receiver can do than a couple TDs and over 200 yds.

I'm not sure how much a WR can really make everyone around them better. But for whatever its worth, keep in mind that T.J. Houshmandzadeh, a poorly-regarded seventh round pick, has become a superstar playing opposite Johnson.

This is some of the dumbest shit I've heard. He's a god damn receiver, how do you expect him to make his team better any more or less than Marques Colston?

He hears the snap, runs a route and turns to see if he's open and the ball is coming. How is that any different than any other WR in the game? He's so me-first, he demands Carson throw him the ball even if other receivers are more open?
