WW LXXXIII Marvel Universe - Game Over! Rebel victory!
Contact info - hoopsguy1154 (AIM) and TyrithofMuse (AIM).
Start date for this one is targeted at Monday, October 6th. A couple of unconventional things going on here with sign-ups for this one: 1.) I'll need to know what character you want to play. I'm more than happy to help with suggestions for people who are not well versed in comics. However, it helps me if you can give some kind of ideas about what kind of character you want to play - either "super powers" or some kind of "WW role" correlation. Requests should be limited to the Marvel universe, since it is the setting for this game (no Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, etc) For those of you who submitted requests earlier, you can either stick with those characters or go with someone new. Maybe you've had second thoughts, maybe the rules suggest that there is a more optimal play ... I'm absolutely fine with you switching to someone else if you want to do that. But I need a PM, one way or the other, letting me know who you will play. Once I post a hero/villain, I hope that you will stay with the person out of respect to other players who might have wanted to take the person you choose but will have to instead pick someone else. 2.) You should PM me (and Tyrith) with the character you will be playing. Don't post it in the thread, unless you want to advertise this information. At the start of the game you will receive a PM that tells you the sign-in information for the FOFC/OS account created for your character. There will be a PM waiting for the character that describes his character, faction, and whatever other important game information is required to get going. All posts in the thread, beginning on Day 1, should be done using this name. Example - Solecismic signs up to be Thor, I'll PM him at start of game with the name/password for the "Thor" FOFC/OS account. 3.) I'll update the player list with the list of registered heroes/villains, not with the actual FOFC names 4.) All PMs to moderators, including the initial sign-up stuff, should go to both me and Tyrith. We will be co-moderators. People who played the last version of this game know that there are a bunch of moving parts and I'm not smart enough to keep track of them all by myself. I'll add additional items to this "sign-ups" post as they come up. Last edited by hoopsguy : 10-20-2008 at 10:29 PM. Reason: added AIM info for both moderators |

Moderator Source Note #1 - There were a pair of superhero games on BoardGameGeek (BGG), one involving Thanos and another that was an X-Men based game, that got me looking at comics as source material.
- The Werewolf Gauntlet: The Werewolf Gauntlet - Starting Aug 7 | BoardGameGeek Forums - X-Man: The Cure: The X-Men Cure - Game Over! | BoardGameGeek Forums From there I ran a game here and read one more comic game at BGG. This game draws upon elements from all of the BGG stories, while continuing the story from my first Apocalypse game. - Apocalypse Awakens: Werewolf XLI - Apocalypse Awakens - Game over! - Front Office Football Central - End of Forever: The End of Forever - Game Over - Evil Triumphs | BoardGameGeek Forums Moderator Source Note #2 - this game will be based very loosely upon the X-Men story "The Age of Apocalypse". This was a story written in 1995 where Professor Xavier is killed, thus creating an alternate timeline where Apocalypse comes to rule. A number of familiar characters are cast in new roles in the harsh "survival of the fittest" regime. In our story, Apocalypse defeated the heroes in "Apocalypse Awakens" and has broadened his power base over the past two years. Here is a summary of the original story in the comics. Note that I will be quite liberal with my adaptation to werewolf and that events are likely to deviate substantially from the comic version. - .: UncannyXmen.Net - 8 Years young! : :. Moderator Source Note #3 - anyone who reads all of the links I provide probably has too much time on their hands. Background: Apocalypse has established dominion over the Americas and is looking to extend his power across the globe. The primary enforcers of his will are a high council of Prelates. Although there have been sporadic uprisings over the years, but none have had required resources and leadership necessary to disrupt Apocalypse's rule. However, that may be changing as the Hounds have identified a traitorous Prelate. If this wasn't enough of a concern, there is the little matter of the arrival of Galactus, Eater of Worlds, sizing up Earth. Factions: Players: 25 (not a fixed #) Evil/Werewolves: rebellion against DOOM! Good/Villagers: DOOM!, his Prelates, and those loyal to him Others: those who don't neatly fit under the other two categories During sign-ups, each player selects a Marvel comics hero or villain that they would like to play during this game. The moderator has the right to refuse a selection (Galactus cannot be selected) but will try to accommodate any reasonable selection. The moderator will assign roles/powers prior to the start of the game. The game begins with an established ruling hierarchy under Apocalypse. This is well known to all players - these are public roles. Not all players will have a public role. Each player has a private role that includes powers, health, energy, and win conditions (if different from overall group) Win Conditions: Minority ("Good"): Easy way: Overthrow the tyrant (ie - kill Apocalypse, er DOOM!), plus assume majority of seats on ruling council. Hard way: kill Apocalypse (er, DOOM!) and every one of his followers. Either one will do. Oh, and don't let Galactus eat the planet. Majority ("Evil"): Squash the rebellion - eliminate all good/minority. Don't let Galactus eat the planet. Others (what? there are others?): ??? Characters: Each character will be assigned a set of powers, as well as ratings for Health and Energy. Health - how much damage a character can sustain before they are killed Energy - the currency for taking actions. All powers cost at least one point of energy Powers - these will differ from character to character. As you would expect with a comic book theme, some characters will be inherently more powerful than others. Each character will have a Standard Attack, Standard Defense, and at least one "Special" power. Powers: There are four classes of damage: physical, energy, psionic, and magical. Characters may have resistances to some or all of these damage types. There are a few powers that are automatic; these do not need to be declared in thread or via PM. Expect that there will be some duplicate powers, depending on character selection but a ton of unique powers as well. Powers should be a reflection of the comic book character, but likely will not be an exact representation. In rare cases different powers have been assigned. This is done for both game balance and to introduce some elements of unpredictability in the game. Recovery: All characters recover 4 energy and 1 health per day unless otherwise noted. Health cannot exceed the starting value, but there is no cap on energy levels. If a character does not launch an attack during the Day cycle they will only recover 2 energy. This is in place to encourage participation and to remove any incentives to skipping an action during the day. Deadlines: Day ends at 9PM CST Night ends at 5AM CST Day Cycle: Each day players issue a "Standard Attack" - this is the equivalent of "voting". Each character declares their attack and their target in the thread - use caps and bold at the bottom of your post to declare this. A post in the thread assumes that one point of energy will be expended for the attack. However, characters have the option of delivering additional damage. PM the moderator if you want to deliver extra damage. Unlike last game, attacks can be revoked. Only one attack can be issued per day (although if an attack is revoked, another attack can be initiated in its place). A player may still use a special attack in addition to their standard attack. Each player has the option to exercise their "Standard Defense". The moderators will accept conditional orders on the use of defense powers, but make sure that the order is as clear and non-ambiguous as possible. In addition to the Standard Attack/Defense powers, a player may exercise one, and only one, of the following actions over the course of the day/night cycle: - Special Attack/Ability: every player has at least one option that falls under this category. - Guard Action: protect a player during the night phase. A guard action ensures that the guarding player is the recipient of a night attack on the player guarded. Note that this may only be ordered by Apocalypse or Prelates - players will not do this of their own volition. - Mission: participate in a daily mission. - Galactus: attempt to slow Galactus from destroying the planet. Once a player has committed to one of these four actions they become ineligible for the other three. So if a player is participating in a mission they are not eligible for guard actions, Galactus actions, or using a Special Attack/Ability. Lynch (End of Day Cycle): At the end of the Day cycle, the character who receives the most effective damage (some damage may be negated by use of active or inherent powers) is eligible for lynch. If the effective damage is greater than their remaining health, that character is removed from the game. Additionally, a second character who sustains a level of effective damage greater than or equal to twice their health rating (ex: Health of 6, if reduced to -6 or less they would fall under this rule) will suffer the same fate. So it is possible for there to be no "lynch" or for their to be two "lynches" in a given day. The tie-breaker for 2nd kill, if it comes to that, is 1.) furthest value from zero 2.) most damage sustained in current day. Note - Apocalypse can be injured by attacks, but cannot be the victim of a conventional lynch. In the event that there is not a day kill (excluding Day 1) Galactus will move one day closer to devouring the planet. No, this doesn't really fit from a comic book standpoint, but it does create consequences for the players if they attempt to "wait out" the minority force. Conditional rule – in the event that there are more than 25 players, then any player who is knocked to negative starting health (6 starting health, = -6 or lower at end of day) is also dead. Players will likely not have complete information on damage delivered by attacks over the course of the day, but the end of day recap will include the total amount of damage delivered to each character. Note that this amount will often differ from the amount of damage sustained by the players. The recap will also include the player who executed the "kill shot". Character faction will be revealed upon death. Night Cycle: Many characters will have powers that can be used during the Night Cycle. This includes the "minority" force, who have the option to execute a night kill during this phase. Note that the night kills take energy, just like any other activity. Players may be able to impact the night kill through use of powers or guard actions. Below is the order for night actions. Order of Night Actions: 1. Defense actions 2. Research actions 3. Attack actions 4. Energy/health regeneration Tie-breakers on order - actions that cost less energy are processed before actions that cost more energy within the same category. In the event of a tie in order of operations and energy cost, the first action submitted will be processed first. Additional Concepts: Prelates: The ruling class in Apocalypse's order, the Prelates are responsible for enforcing his will. There is a declared hierarchy among the Prelates. Each of the Prelates is publicly known by all players. - Prelates have option to issue an order to a player to do one of the following: "Guard", "Mission", or "Galactus" - A player has the option to refuse an order (privately or publicly) if they are the target of an order in consecutive days - In the event that Prelates have conflicting orders, the order of the higher ranking Prelate will be followed - The 1st and 2nd Prelates cannot be ordered at all, but lower ranking Prelates may be ordered by Apoc, the 1st Prelate, or the 2nd Prelate - In the event that a Prelate is killed, all eligible Prelates move up one rank and Apocalypse (er, DOOM!) assigns a new Prelate. No new Prelates are assigned after the death of Apocalypse (er, DOOM!) Guard Action: - only ordered by Prelates - precludes use of other "special actions" during day/night cycle - when ordered by Prelate, the order will dictate both the player who will guard and the person they will protect. Example - "Prelate Silver Surfer orders Wolverine to guard Captain America" - when a player is on guard duty, they become the target of a night attack in place of the person they are protecting. Example - Wolverine takes an attack intended for Captain America (as well as any attacks targeted at Wolverine, if he is not protected by another player) - a Prelate can "bluff" the order. If this is the intent, the Prelate must PM the moderators to inform them of his intention. This must take place during the day phase. The moderator will convey this information to the player ordered to guard at the start of the night cycle, allowing them the option to take an alternative night action. However, the “pseudo-ordered” player does miss out on the chance to participate in Mission Actions or Galactus Actions as a result of the bluff. The penalty for the Prelate is that they sacrifice the option to issue Guard actions for the remainder of the game. Mission Action: - as a general rule, there will be one mission per day - participation in "mission action" precludes use of other "special actions" during day/night cycle - players who participate on a mission will PM the moderator the amount of energy they want to use to help make the mission a "success" - missions may involve competition between factions, or a pre-set amount of energy needed to complete a mission - each mission will involve either rewards for the winners or some sort of penalty for failure Galactus Action: - once per day the players can send a group of players to encounter Galactus - participation in "Galactus mission" precludes use of other "special actions" during day/night cycle - players who participate on Galactus action will PM the moderator the amount of energy they want to use on the mission - activity in these missions is intended to slow Galactus' progress in devouring the planet or to deter him entirely Voice of the Madri - the masses of players can stage a revolt against a prelate by popular vote. Apoc and the 1st Prelate are immune to this, but all others are potentially vulnerable to this. All prelates below the disgraced prelate move up a rank and a new prelate is inserted immediately in the 5th Prelate role. This is separate from an attack - just a straight "vote" option that is available. The Prelates (and Apocalypse) are not part of this vote. Can only be exercised once per three days. "Make Your Own Power" - aren't happy with what the moderator assigned you? Once per game, you have the option to create your own power based on your comic book character. PM the moderators with your concept for how the power should work, what the cost should be, when it can be used, etc. Moderators will either approve, "counter-offer", or outright refuse. Refusal does not count as use of the power. The PM conversation must take place at least one day before it can be used (day + night cycle). The intent here is to encourage creative play that is within the spirit of the theme. Teams: Heroes may form "teams" by mutual declaration within the thread. Team benefits include: 1.) Receive a bonus when teammates act together on Mission Actions and Galactus Actions, larger bonuses for more participants 2.) Opportunity for enhanced communication if certain in-game parameters are met 3.) One extra point of damage delivered if two teammates deliver attack posts with back-to-back posts in the thread (post #101, post #102). This is cumulative (post #103 for a 3rd teammate) 4.) Some powers may be more effective in team environment 5.) Opportunity for additional rewards based on duration of team 6.) Opportunity for team sabotage at any time. Can be completed in one of two ways, will be known publicly either way: - siphon energy from team during night cycle, saboteur gains 1/2 of energy (rounding down) from every teammate in addition to their own energy - can 100% negate actions of all teammates on a Mission Action or Galactus Action Teams can be formed and broken up at any time. The declaration of a team must be agreed upon in the thread. The team should be announced in bold, with the name of the team and all member of the team. Additional benefits may become available for teams who remain together for a sustained period of time. Additional Game Notes: 1. If you try to use a power and do not have enough power to use it the power will not activate 2. If you try to use a power and use more energy than you currently have, the moderator will assign all remaining energy to the power 3. No editing posts 4. Unlike last game, not all actions are processed in real time. This is to allow defensive powers to be more useful. The moderators will note any actions that will be processed immediately, either in character PM or within the game thread. 4. Character powers will take precedence over any rules posted in this thread. The rules here are meant to apply to the majority, but in some cases may not apply to a small minority 5. This is a comic book setting. Expect some new mechanics for this game that pay homage to a comic book universe. 6. Playing in character is highly encouraged. The moderator reserves the right to reward players for especially good role play, either publicly or privately. 7. If a character is driven below 25% of their health, but still lives into the next day, they will be listed at 25% of their health (rounding up) heading into the night cycle. Regular healing will take place at that time. 9/30 edit: clarification on win conditions, previous use of word "evil" was inaccurate 10/2 edit: added info on Apoc "unlynchable" status 10/6 edit: updated "wolf" victory conditions to include "kill 'em all" as alternate path to victory 10/9 edit: updated win conditions Last edited by hoopsguy : 10-09-2008 at 09:39 AM. |

Okay, I'll play as Green Lantern.
Is it important to read all those rules? Or can I just take my power ring into the fray and proceed to do battle? I kid, I kid. |

20 in the books so far! I'm getting greedy and hoping to grab a couple of more players between now and the start date.
Also, there is a pretty good chance that D1 will end up spanning Monday and Tuesday. Tyrith is unavailable that day and it looks like I'll be visiting a new client that day. So everyone should have a little more time to get adjusted to the new rules. |

I'll be closing sign-ups at midnight on Friday. I'll need the weekend to address final game balance issues, finalize account creation for all the heroes, and get the initial PMs sent.
Day 1 will be an extended day, spanning Monday and Tuesday. Hopefully this gives plenty of time for people to get comfortable with the rules. I'm expecting Day 1 will be a little more eventful than usual, given the structure of this game - day cycle isn't just "vote someone out". |

Would it be helpful for people if I list information on the heroes in the game? I can put the Wikipedia, or alternate, link up that I used as part of the character creation process if people would like to see that added.

Also, a note on the "universe" where this game takes place. It is not exactly a friendly place. Apocalpyse lives by the motto "survival of the fittest" and each of you is (or is pretending to be) a member of his elite forces. The best of you are self-serving, while the worst of you are outright psycopaths. This is true even for those of you who are "heroes" in the normal Marvel universe.
Want to play nicely with others? Chances are the rest of the players are not trying to create "win/win" scenarios, but instead to advance up the ruling hierarchy. Want to backstab everyone in your path? A great strategy as long as you have the strength to carry the day. Want to sacrifice your minions (er .. allies) while trapping the traitors? Now we're talking ... |

Oh, just thought about a balancing issue if you're encouraging role playing. You can't role play someone who is smarter than you, (ie it's not going to help me if I'm Mr Fantastic, Henry Pym or Beast but you can role play so it makes you do things that aren't omptimum in the game. That means that the village is likely to play slightly dumber than usual (I'm taking a wild guess that the wolves won't be going all out to role play, although they'll be able to use role playing as a cover).

Given that the villagers are servants of Apocalypse that should be just because the person you're playing is usually good that doesn't mean you're bad in this game.

Is it weird that this signup thread is dominating the actual game thread that's going on?

I was reading back through the last game and sort of cringed at our gloating towards the end, even though I still think it was totally a comic-book thing to do. Plus, after getting through a game like that and being able to pull a surprise was just so much damn fun......

What they hay, I'm in. I'm limited on time, so I won't be around much, but I'll do what I can.

27 in, have three more people that I believe are in but I'm waiting to nail down characters. So, barring any late surprises, we'll have 30 for this game.
Now, how do I get you guys to kill each other fast enough for this game to end in two weeks? (Insert sinister laugh here) |

I never got around to reading the entire first thread. Not to spoil any surprises, but did it end sorta like this?

Nah, Professor X was long dead by the end But same general feel. If I remember correctly, Storm's one shining moment didn't work out exactly as planned. |

I seem to recall something about percentages being behind my demise in that game...
