Yea, this deal is actually including his 2015 year for prorated purposes so the cap numbers aren't bad at all. And in reality, what are you going to do? Go find a new QB? We see that happen all the time.

So what's Chip Kelly's problem with talented players? Isn't Brandon Boykin like really good? The steelers got him for a 5th that can become a 4th.

Kelly is 100% in on his system. If you don't fit, then he'll get what he can for you.

I'm anxious for him to fully implement his system so we can see if the NFL's game engine is broken.

Unlike the string of retirements, which seemed to come out of the blue, Aldon Smith's deal was part of the risk the 49ers had coming into the season. Based on his history, this was something that was certainly possible.

They had already reworked his deal into a bunch of roster bonuses, I believe. It's not that surprising he was on his last strike

Also it's a pretty sneaky tanking move. He had to be worth a half of a win or so, this just buys them a pick 5 or so higher.

The bullshit around his alcoholism and supposedly overcoming it last year really did no favors for him. It was remarkably transparent last year when he quickly made it through treatment that he was likely to have continuing problems. He, his agent, the team, and the NFL all were more concerned about short term profit and now the guy is likely out of the game for good.

I missed the introductory press conference but I was very impressed with how Tomsula handled the press conference. Is he always that respectful to the press?

Think I finally have reached my burn out point with the NFL.

Used to be that I'd have known this game was on and been ready to watch it two hours before kickoff. Found out this was on, still watching the Dodgers/Pirates and will watch the CFL game I recorded earlier today when I'm done on the interwebs.

Flynn's out, Lindley's in as the Patriots' clipboard carrier. If Belichick can make Ryan Lindley into an NFL quarterback, he's not just Hall of Fame worthy, he's Football itself.

At least it happened on the field, not like the Jacksonville punter and the axe in the locker room.

Seems like they only made this move so they'll have a backup Thursday, and there's a better chance they'll re-sign Flynn once healthy than actually try and develop Lindley. "Asked what traits he sees from Lindley that makes the Patriots want to work with him, Belichick said, "He has some experience, been with a couple different organizations, played some, and he's healthy. That's the most important trait.""

The Jags may have two in per-season camp, they brought someone in for competition who just had some really intriguing kicks in the first scrimmage and such. You can have the one we don't wind up with.

The Lions are actually set at kicker, they just went through a couple kickers, a draft pick and practically lost last season getting there.

Saints looking pretty meh in first preseason game. Over the last two offseasons, the team gave big contracts to Jimmy Graham (traded), Junior Gallette (cut), and Jarius Byrd (injured).

I think that the team has done the right thing by trying to fix those mistakes and take the cap hit, as opposed to keeping the contracts on the books as an albatross. But it also means that the team could not really improve this offseason in free agency.

Unless the rookies step up in a bigger way than I expect, it seems like 7-9 is likely again.

And Rob Ryan seems like a super duper fun guy. But I am not sure why he's managed to stay around as a DC for so long: Rob Ryan Record, Statistics, and Category Ranks | Pro-Football-Reference.com

Kudos to ESPN writer Field Yates for this nugget. Only 3 players on Green Bay's 88-man roster have played an NFL snap for another team: Peppers, Letroy Guion and John Kuhn. Pretty crazy in today's NFL.

Yeah I am biased, but....I suspect Stephone Anthony is going to be the rookie shock of the league this year.

He was never asked to be a stud in his college system and still jumped off the film. TREMENDOUS Athlete and a great natural instinct for the ball

I really expected rugby-convert Jarryd Hayne's NFL experiment to be a miserable failure, but he's certainly shown some flashes. A nice 55 yard rush today and a couple of decent kick returns... I'd say he's a real shot to stick the way he's been going.

I'm not sure I have a huge problem with it since the guard pulled and he was following him while the entire OL blocked one guy... but yeah he still sucks.

very surprised they resigned him. I would have thought they would roll the dice on a rookie given how he's looked the past couple seasons.
