I always love watching this, because it's like the Yakuza episode of the Simpsons, where Homer sees the small Japanese guy standing around on the side not doing anything, then when he leaves the guy suddenly does something awesome. You just see Prince standing over there mostly in the dark for 3 minutes, barely even noticing its him if you don't know, then all of a sudden... |

We have discovered a startling revelation.
Prince dies the day Queen Elizabeth is celebrating her 90th birthday. CLEARLY, we now know the Queen is a practitioner of the black arts, sacrificing Prince so that she may sustain her unholy life. Call the Inquisition immediately. |

Rolling Stone has him as the #33 guitarist of all time. This is crushing for me. I've been in awe of his ability as a musician. Quite simply, a one of a kind artist and musical prodigy. We are much less without him.

As someone with no music talent whatsoever, Prince was someone I was in complete awe of for a long time.

Man. Loved his early mainstream hits of course, then he kind of got weird, and I thought, man, that's a weird dude. Then I started listening deeper to his stuff and I thought, It's pretty cool that this dude seemingly does not give a shit about selling out or pandering for airplay. Then I realized that he was an amazing fucking musician. It says something that people rave about how absolutely great he was and yet he still feels underrated in the pantheon of greats.

I was an early adopter on the music of Prince, among the first artists I felt like I "discovered" before everybody else.
Before "1999", before "Controversy" , even before "Dirty Mind", I managed to pick out his extraordinary talents from the first hit single (hey, I wasn't quite 13 years old, cut me some slack for needing a single). But it wasn't the hits that caught my attention. This was no cookie cutter performer, he was a lot more than image or gimmick. He could play, and frequently did, pretty much any instrument on his albums ... but hand him a guitar and he really stood out. That's what set him apart for me. I moved on from the rap and r&b niches not long after his popularity exploded. Metal grabbed me and held me from that point forward ... but there was no sense of guilty pleasure in enjoying Prince's work before or after, he was as legit as it gets. And there's a whole lot of performers in the rock niche that could stand to take lessons from him.

I liked his early stuff, but even was on board with a lot of the New Power Generation stuff too. Too bad, as it really seemed like he had finally gotten over the whole "artist slavery" thing and was getting some attention back and getting less media-shy.

It seems worth something that I truly did not even remember/realize (thanks liquor!) that the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, U2, or Bruce Springsteen had all played recent half-time SB shows, until I went looking for that Prince performance, which I recall better & enjoyed more than most of the actual games from the last 20 Super Bowls.

Read a story that said some one asked Eric Clapton what it was like to be the greatest living guitarist, and he said "I don't know. Ask Prince."
He was the soundtrack of my teens. I knew every lyric to every song on the Purple Rain album. He was just amazing. Tremendous loss too soon. |

Interestingly, Vox.com just pointed out, that if you want to listen to some Prince and don't have his albums, the only streaming service that has his albums are... Tidal.
That's unfortunate.

This looks to be the (slightly more complimentary) guitarist version of "XXXXX had to go to the emergency room to get semen pumped from his stomach" myth. You used to find that exact same quote/story attributed to Jimi Hendrix, talking about Terry Kath, Billy Gibbons, Rory Gallagher or even Eric Clapton.

I guess I need to listen to more of his music because I'm not understanding the reaction across the Internet. Must have missed the boat on him.
