What's up with Joaquin Phoenix?

I read online this morning that Joaquin Phoenix has announced he's retiring from the film industry to focus on a music career. It might not sound so strange were it not for the way he announced it. Here's the bizarre interview.

We all just wanna be big rock stars
And live in hilltop houses driving fifteen cars
The girls come easy and the drugs come cheap
We'll all stay skinny as we just won't eat
And we'll hang out in the coolest bars
In the VIP with the movie stars
Every good gold digger's gonna wind up there
Every Playboy bunny with her bleach blond hair and well,
Hey hey I wanna be a rock star

Well, at least he won the 'who lives longer' bet with his brother. His life is a freeroll at this point.

Looks like a publicity stunt to me. Could be wrong, but it appears that way.

I don't buy it, it seems more like a stunt of some kind.

I know that some people believe this whole thing is a hoax, but after watching his interview on Letterman last night, I'm pretty sure it's not a joke and that he's seriously in trouble. I thought on more than one occasion during the interview that Joaquin was going to jump up and assault Letterman.........

Letterman did a great job making that very entertaining. That said, I still say this is an act. Casey Affleck is filming a documentary about Phoenix right now. If he is really as bad as he looks I have a hard time believing that Affleck would just continue filming. Arent they brother-in-laws anyway?

Here is him "preforming". Link. Looks like a mockumentary to me.

10:49 long, but worth it, especially the end when it starts to go bad a little bit. I may watch this a few more times today it's so damn funny to me.

I agree it was quite possibly an act, but I don't think the two [putting on an act/substance abuse issues] are mutually exclusive. I do think he was being intentionally bizarre last night, but with his apparently well-known substance abuse issues of the past he might be sliding into that hole as well.

Would he really apparently sabotage his whole career just to spoof people for a documentary? I think the guy has serious issues.

The thing that doesn't make sense to me about this ... well, one of the things anyway ... is why Affleck would put his own marketability at risk with continued involvement in whatever sort of documentary this is supposed to be if Phoenix is either high or s.f.n. or both.

I mean bad judgment is one thing but surely he enjoys going to the bank too much to completely ignore what would have to be a steady stream of "please get away from this" calls from his management.

Isn't he related to River Phoenix? If so, substance abuse wouldn't surprise me.

This is Casey Affleck, not Ben. And I could see this being an amusing documentary wound into real life.

Though not so much if it isn't a spoof.

This is great. These talk shows are almost too embarrasingly awkward for me to watch even when they have "normal" guests. The staged Q&A, bagged stories, and rediculous applause meter crowds, come on. I mean, Letterman came out swinging about the beard and set the tone for a messed up interview. Who gives a fug if the guy has a beard, is it that funny? I would've been standoffish too. That being said, Joaquin is clearly out of his mind. Even so, kudos to him for giving an Erik Bedard like interview on Letterman.

Come on, guys, think about it. Casey Affleck is an Academy-caliber actor. You think he would jeopardize his career for a stunt that would go bad or be subjected to lawsuits?

I have a hard time believing Letterman would let him on the air if he was as messed up as he seems legitimately. I don't think they'd sit and mock him the entire time either if it were legit.

that's acting. people have too many handlers in Hollywood that they can just walk into any talk show they want and pull their cocks out. you think he wasn't checked out by Letterman's people backstage? you think they're gonna let a beligerant and drunk and possibly violent wildcard close to the host?

Definitely an act. He wouldn't have been allowed anywhere near Letterman otherwise. Letterman's too old for that crap, and is clearly comfortable and in is element here.

After a second viewing it seems fairly obvious that he is doing some things to try and keep from laughing. The sighing, looking down, etc. And I agree with the comments about Dave. A completely different guy from the Crispin Glover interview.

I do like what they're doing here though. entertaining.

I vote acting, as well.

I suspect we would have seen a publicist's response and Mr. Phoenix entering some form of "rehab" if this was legit.
