Our school take every student to the movies at the end of the year if they reach certain school wide reading goals. This year, the movie was Up. About half the staff talked about how it dragged at moments and some thought the entire dog thing was a little over the top.

I probably shouldn't have talked to them before I saw it a week later. It was Okay, but probably my least favorite Pixar movie. I was glad I went once, but I wouldn't add it to my collection.

For historic epic, what about 300? I didn't care for it, found it rather boring actually, but I am sure others here liked it.

Ironic since that is my exact criticism of There Will Be Blood. I have only watched maybe 2 movies (Seven Years in Tibet being one) that bored me more.

Wow, you actually watched Seven Years in Tibet? I knew by the looks of it that it would not interest me. Unless of course you were coerced into watching it...

It's been years, but it was one of those where someone else rented it when a group of us were watching a movie at a friends house kind of thing.

Along the same lines, I've never heard anyone state a dislike for Bull Durham, even if they (like me) can't stand Sarandon's and Robbins' politics.

Durham is a good pick.

Crash Davis: Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
Ebby Calvin LaLoosh: [to himself] What's this guy know about pitching? If he's so good how come he's been in the minors for the last ten years? If he's so good how come Annie wants me instead of him?
Crash Davis: Oh, hey, and another thing, Meat. You don't know shit, all right? If you wanna make it to the bigs, you'll listen to me. Annie only wants you so she can boss you around, got it? So relax! Let's have some fun out here! This game's fun, OK? Fun goddamnit. And don't hold the ball so hard, OK? It's an egg. Hold it like an egg.

If you can't enjoy a movie because you don't like an actor/actresses opinions in real life, then that's your problem.

If you're a baseball fan, then you have to like Bull Durham. To claim otherwise is blashphemy, and you should be forced to watch Major League 3: Back to the Minors for 72 hours straight as punishment.

I was not aware that there WAS a Major League 3 movie. How bad must that thing be...?

It's so bad. You can't even say "it's so bad that it's good" because it is worse than that.

Susan Sarandon's character spoils Bull Duraham at times for me. I still like the movie ok, but can see how her and Costner's characters can turn one away from it. Major League, while probably an inferior movie, might be the better choice for a sports comedy.

Obvious recent example already talked about on this board: Star Trek (2009), nowhere near the best Star Trek themed movie, but far and away the best Star Trek franchise movie for this exercise.

Unfortunately, I made the mistake of spoiling the outcome of the Woody Harrelson-Rosie Perez subplot, and now she won't watch the movie. Ah, well. Since there was no "she" identified in this paragraph, I'm gonna assume you're talking about Rosie Perez. Good job buddy.

Bingo. The perfect baseball movie IMO. Comedy, solid story, and good acting by guys who can actually play baseball -- an underrated part of sports movie.

Bull Durham is great but every time they show Robbins winding up as he pretends to be a baseball player I want to hang myself.

Crap, I totally deleted the sentence I had put in about my wife, I guess. I have been trying to get her to watch the movie, but now she won't. And, apparently, I think Rosie Perez won't watch it either. I am a puddle of goo.

I like this. Except I prefer a more unconventional method of suicide; I force myself to watch The Bridges of Madison County. I pray for death before the opening scene has even started.

I hated "300", I am on your side here. I didn't even make it through the entire thing it was so fucking boring. This movie made Sin City look like an Academy Award winner.

If only they could have made a Thermopylae movie based on Gates of Fire.

Personally I find Marathon and Salamis to be more compelling Greek v. Persian battles (though I tend to be more pro-Athenian).

The genre might not appeal to everyone, but Aliens is a movie that I can't think of a lot of people hating.

Since people mentioned baseball movies, for football...what about the original The Longest Yard?

Come to think of it, there aren't any good Football movies out there just in general. The best one IMO is The Program with James Caan.

Friday Night Lights (though after reading the book, I wish they showed more of the racial issues)

What about The Replacements? I know it featured Keanu "I have no brain" Reaves, but it was still an entertaining flick.

The Waterboy, unless enjoyed strictly for the comedy aspect, would make anyone not familiar with American football loathe it.

I was referring to the Adam Sandler remake of the Longest Yard. I've seen the Waterboy and while it's no Happy Gilmore it's a decent sports comedy.

Add me into the 300 hate. The most obvious sign it was a bad movie: it is about 300 Spartans, and they are too lazy to ever show close to 300 spartans in the movie. Its the f'in title emphasis of the movie, and we can't even CGI in what at least looked close to the emphasized number of soldiers? (Hell they had to CGI everything else!)
