Your Music/Movie Categories

My fever began with DVD Aficionado. I was logging in DVDs and I remember how stupid it was to see Blade as "Superhero" Certainly the character is a Marvel Comics character, but the film;s genre was vampire/horror/action or something other than superhero. It was a lot more like other vampire flicks than XMen, Spider Man or Captain America.

So I changed it in my list. You had the ability to properly place its genre.

And I have held that passion through today. It's really important in my iTunes music. Lots of music is either in the wrong category, or just in a generic one. So I'll move Hooverphonic to Trip-hop. But come on - Depeche Mode is not rock! Oldies is not a genre, it's an era. The songs within that era are Doo-Wop, or Soul, or Southern Rock, or Psychedelic, not merely "old." Etc.

Does anyone else have this morbid obsession of getting the right genre for your music or movies?

Not to that extent, no. And I'm pretty anal about my music.

I am long past putting that kind of energy into anything non-mandatory, but in the past I would have gotten great satisfaction out of fixing stuff like that. However, genre in particular isn't something I think about much.

I used to do stuff like this waaaaay back in the day.

Now, on Saturday I was in bed doing absolutely nothing with my wife out of town. I wanted to watch all of Rounders after stumbling on it on HBO about a half hour in just a few days prior. So first I looked for it on HBO On Demand. Not there. I fired up the Netflix app on my Blu Ray player. Not there. Finally, I opened Amazon Instant Video to see if it was available there. It was...but not free with Prime. I could have had it for $2.99.

I did all of this to avoid the worst possible situation, when I would finally get up and walk into the other room where I had a nice copy of Rounders on DVD.

You should have emailed me. Its one of my DVDs that I actually got around to ripping to my server.

I was anal about my music until I got Spotify. I used to scour Allmusic and use their genres, moods and styles to sort my music.

+1. If I listened to iTunes based on genre, I probably would be anal about it. I've seen some real wacky genres for music in iTunes.

If I went down the rabbit hole, I'd get sucked in because many artists are not pigeonholed to one genre for a career or sometimes even an album. I might classify U2 as alternative though just in case Bono ever sees my iTunes list and I want to piss him off.

There are two categories for me. Those movies and music that are good and those that suck.
