Countdown to Dec 21, 2012 - End of the World

Watching CNBC special on preppers and got me thinking. Anyone sweating this Dec 2012?

I don't believe it but the build up to it will get me thinking about replenishing my emergency supplies anyway.

BTW - I finally watched "The Road" as Fry's had it on special. Depressing as hell. If it was me, I would have let go.

2012 — History.com Articles, Video, Pictures and Facts
Quote:
There has long been speculation that on December 21, 2012, the world as we know it will end. Some predict that we'll be wiped out by a natural disaster like a giant tidal wave, an Earth-wide earthquake or a tremendous volcanic eruption. Others believe that on that day in December, the Earth will collide with a mysterious "Planet X," causing magnetic pole shifts, gravitational reversals or a black hole so big that our solar system will simply disappear. What's more, believers say that this news is not really news at all; on the contrary, they argue, we have known about the coming apocalypse since the ancient Maya predicted and recorded it on their Long Count calendar more than 2,200 years ago.

If the world is going to end there isn't much point in emergency supplies.

I've wondered. There seems to have been a lot of natural disasters within the last last couple of years. Winter was mild and we're seeing lots of hot, record breaking weather.

If the world is going to end, there's nothing we can fucking do about it.

There's been some odd natural events and weather - it was a poor summer in Australia and it's been a colder and wetter than normal winter - but at the same time, we just forget about the bad runs different eras have had previously.

Interestingly enough before this thread I'd never heard about this:

i first heard the 12/21/12 thing from terrance mckenna's timewave zero stuff. that was late 90's early 00's iirc. then the mayan stuff starts making the rounds.

i forget where i read it but it was some conversation between rfk and secret service during the cuban missile crisis asking him if he wanted his wife and kids moved to a gov't bunker. he said, 'no. that's not a world worth living in.'

Shit will go down someday one way or another, nothing lasts forever, but when it happens or starts to happen has nothing to do with the Mayans.

Preppers do realize that while other people might starve to death, that the preppers will get murdered for their stockpile of shit. I don't really see the point.

Not if they've got a small arsenal to go with it (which they'll need for the zombies anyway).

I have no belief that that date is the end.

HOWEVER, I've wondered if it not become some sort of self-fulfilling prophecy where so many people convince themselves that it is the end, that they make rash decisions, do stupid stuff, etc. and end up making it the end.

So what happens when we hit 2013 and we're all here? Do these people make up some lame excuse as to why it didn't happen? It's the one thing I never get about conspiracy theorists. How can you keep going on after being wrong so many times?

They will come out and say it was a miscalculation in our interpretation of the Mayan calendar and that the world is actually supposed to end on 10-25-2015. For realsies this time.

I love how they tack on actual science at the end of that long string of crackpot theories. Sure, I'll just bet the world ends in 5 billion years, science! And what happens when we go 5 billion more years and the sun's not a red giant and we're all still here, huh? I know, you made a mistake, right? You meant 5,000,000,001 years? Whatever.

I think there were a lot more people afraid 2000 was a possible end of the world because of the Y2K scare so if we weathered that for the self-fulfilling reason then I think we're safe this year.

The Mayan calendar doesn't have leap years, so we're already past what would have beeb the end of the world.

I still remember back in the 80s listening to weather-folks pointing out that we had been through a decade or two of historically mild weather, and that when it returned to normal people would be freaking out over what is actually typical weather.

Perhaps the Mayans weren't very good at spelling, and confused Global Warning with Global Warming?

Odd, though, the appeal of various numeralogies. I'm not sure why anyone even pretending to understand science would see relevance in numbers of turns around the sun. Did the Mayans even think the Earth had an orbit? What are the Adventists up to these days?

Apparently the backstory is that he left meteorology about a year ago and this was a final broadcast he had put together as a joke but never aired it- just giving it to some friends and family but it leaked out to the internet. Now with the weird weather on the east coast, it's gone viral in the last week a year after it was created.

I'll see everyone here on the 22nd of December this year. Anyone that thinks the Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world are one of two kinds of people: 1. Too stupid to look up the actual facts on how the Mayans kept time or 2. People trying to make a buck off of the people listed in number 1.

'apocalypse' means end of the age. not end of the world. we're moving from pisces to aquarius at some point. idk that there's an official consensus on the date though.
