No BYU either and they are better than last year, lost Allgeier, but most everyone else back on Offense and they added transfer RB Chris Brooks who will do damage behind that line.
Defense is healthy with most key players back and some solid additions. They should be a 10-2 team |

Yeah, we had the "okay, who is the non P5 team that has a shot" conversation here in the bat cave. Looking at schedules, etc. That BYU schedule makes life tough even though they might very well be the best non P5 team. fwiw, I sorta settled on "yeah, looks like the Houston vs Cincy winner is the most likely answer to the P5 hopeful question". Not because I think either is that good but rather because of the schedules of other possibles.

Over $1 billion a year is insane. Unless there is something I'm missing, the SEC might have signed another bad TV contract. They are only getting $300 million it seems.

Giving NBC a slice means ND is in.
Add the 4 west coast schools, the B1G has to go to 24. Then you have 4 six team pods. These teams have to come from the East.

Why would NBC being in change Notre Dame's decision? It just adds inventory for NBC and they'd pair it with ND as a double-header.
All this conference bingo is simply rearranging deck chairs during this transitory phase. The idea is not to get left out. Notre Dame will never be left out. If this weren't a transition, the Big Ten and SEC would already have eaten all the edible meals out there. The big question is what happens when the whole FBS ship hits the iceberg of player union/revenue sharing. How do players get paid and distributed to teams? What brands are in and what brands are out? For three of the mid-major conferences (MAC, SB, CUSA), media rights are less than one million per school per season. The Mountain West and AAC are in the mid-single digits, with almost no hope of significant increases. The big question is what happens to the ACC/Pac 12/Big 12 with the next contracts. That will help determine the shape of things post-iceberg. How many schools get to compete in the organized league when major-league college football breaks away from the NCAA? We seem to be a long way from this happening, but this transitional phase is going to lead to a lot of unhappy schools and players and lawsuits. |

I believe Notre Dame and NBCs contract is up and they have to renegotiate. But if ND is in the B1G and the B1G has ND, I believe both make more money than being on their own.

Money doesn't drive ND if it's similar, they want flexibility and feeling special, and they get it.

Re the poll 5 seems high for an ND team that doesn't have a QB I'm sold on and a new coach who I love in theory, but had a 2nd half collapse in his only game as head coach. (Granted we were missing our best offensive & defensive players, but still.)

I see another 8-4 or 9-3 season ahead.
The defense is going to be better this year than last. I am really excited to watch them play. Offense will suck again as we are the only school in the world that hangs on to their shitty OC whose offenses have ranked near the bottom of college football his entire tenure. Oh yeah, its the HCs son.

Yep. Top 5 teams probably shouldn't be 14.5 point dogs in their opener. Not sure how smart scheduling that one was, though maybe they were hoping it was one of those offseasons Ohio State would need to suspend 8 starters for week 1.

so an Alabama transfer to Texas (who was suspended at Bama and left the program) is now suspended from the Longhorns for damaging a parking boot that was placed on his car.

My favorite thing about college football right now are the videos of the players finding out they are now on full scholarship. Watching their teammates celebrate the player’s achievement will probably be better than anything I see on the field this year.

B1G is a money machine. Any school that doesnt realize this is a fool. Alabama would make teice as much mponey if they were in the B1G.

I didn't even realize FSU played today until an alert came up on my phone. I had to look up Duquesne, never heard of the school. It's in Pittsburgh apparently. FSU is favored by 41. I wouldn't put money on FSU to beat our middle school team by 41 at this point.
I can't imagine Norvell surviving this season if they win 6 or fewer games. I'm taking the under in hopes that I'll be pleasantly surprised. If they struggle against Duquesne at all, I invite LSU fans to take him out blindfolded to a swamp in the middle of nowhere next Sunday and leave him. It might be kinder than what Tallahassee will do.

I'm not sure about that. After seeing about a quarter of this one I've come to the conclusion that these are both pretty crappy teams. Might improve as the year goes on but, in late August, these are not good teams.

On paper, they're seemingly always the best (insert losing record here) team in the country. How in the world can you add up all that talent on defense and do absolutely nothing to stop Northwestern? Quips aside, they'd probably win double digits anywhere other than the SEC or Big Ten. |

Nebraska give up 530 yards of offense to one of the worst Big 10 offenses from a year ago and blames his offensive staff for the loss in the post game.

Watching that game, I'm not sure the blame doesn't fall on recruiting as much as coaching. It looked like the cupboard was/is almost bare still. There are a few athletes in evidence but not much in the way of football players that I could see.

I didn't watch, but it's a mystery how Frost made it to this season. Their defense *should* be able to put enough pressure on the quarterback and the running game to simply out-talent a team like Northwestern. I wouldn't bet on Frost lasting the entire year, if this is what they've come up with. |

It looked like a team with athletes but not much football talent against a team that was primarily D-II grade talent. And the D-II team WON. Northwestern outcoached 'em, aside from the stupid onside kick, the key to the outcome was the decision to "make Nebraska beat us". And as the second half wore on, you could see Nebraska remembering who they've become, even players who weren't on the roster looked like they knew they were fucked.

Oh, I forgot to comment on this part Their only effective offense was having Thompson throw the ball as hard as he could and hope for the best. The OL did basically nothing, the run game was non existent. Officially 110 yards on 31 carries, 3.5 ypc but if you take away a 46 yard run & 2 sacks the numbers for the other 28 carries go down to 83 yards, just 2.96 ypc.

I figured Frost would be left in Ireland.
There were something like 25000 Nebby fans at this game. That hot seat is blazing right now. Nebbys defense is terrible. NW ran on them at will in the 2nd half. It was almost like the ran out of steam, but we all know that couldnt be true. Shoot players were puking 18-20 times during practice.

The onside kick was incredibly weird because the one thing Northwestern is known for is how prepared they are. Especially on special teams. They have the least amount of talent in the Big 10 just about every year. But they're well coached and don't make dumb mistakes. I don't even know where Nebraska goes to from here. This isn't even supposed to be a plucky Northwestern squad with a few NFL talents on the roster. It's one of their worst rosters in a long time and they still won. |

NE has to be a tough sell. Lincoln is larger than I thought it was, but how many recruits are thinking out of the gate "oh, yeah -- I want to go to Nebraska?" I don't know that you pull much from the surrounding states, save for maybe Kansas -- if you live in Iowa I'd say Iowa is a better choice; heck, if you're in the Dakotas you might rather opt for UND. You're 37th in state population.

Yeah, makes sense in their heyday. If you're in the championship mix you can draw from anywhere. But once you lose that momentum, you may not get it back.
