I am also not a fan. But then again I just had a boomer tell me I am too young to be a good lawyer.

Baby boomers are the generation that's made sure they've gotten theirs by hurting our future economically and environmentally while blaming everyone else for not being as successful as they are.

And the unaware prime example of what's wrong with the boomer generation provides the comic relief.

Solid article and I may have to check out the book.

Let's save all your posts to show your clients what an open-minded guy you are. You would have shit without boomers, so watch your tongue. And if you don't know why, well, that figures.

Whether it's about baby boomers, millennials, or whatever, I love when these kinds of articles come out and reading the reactions of those who think it's specifically about them.

You should go read the comments section over at Amazon or FB then. Lol. He was on All Things Considered yesterday and the Boomer backlash is considerable and amusing.

I think the arguments he makes are relevant, however, what generation ever sets up the next with a "here you go, buddy - we made the world better for you!" I guess the "greatest generation" did, but that really wasn't a conscious choice to have a huge world war, win it, and then set up years of prosperity. Can't a lot of the arguments he makes be said of generations of the past?

You could argue that nearly every previous generation of people left things better than they were at the start of their generation.

In China the collapse of the Eastern Han dynasty.
The 30 Years War in Germany
The Justinian conquests of North Africa and Italy in the 520s-550s
Collapse of the Western Roman Empire

EDIT: Meant to say these were notable exceptions

I think that the argument goes deeper than simply no generation ever consciously made the next one better. There's a strong argument that the boomers are the at the center of all major public policies and that you can track it as their generation ages.

Things that were made to happen that benefited them were jettisoned when it became disadvantageous or something more beneficial was needed. Generational studies has been something of a hobby of mine and the arguments here are neither new or controversial. They are simply the result of time and observations.

Those arguments (all of them involve conflict) lend weight to what this book prescribes, that might make my next reader list.

Quote:
Are mass violence and catastrophes the only forces that can seriously decrease economic inequality? To judge by thousands of years of history, the answer is yes. Tracing the global history of inequality from the Stone Age to today, Walter Scheidel shows that inequality never dies peacefully. Inequality declines when carnage and disaster strike and increases when peace and stability return. The Great Leveler is the first book to chart the crucial role of violent shocks in reducing inequality over the full sweep of human history around the world.

Ever since humans began to farm, herd livestock, and pass on their assets to future generations, economic inequality has been a defining feature of civilization. Over thousands of years, only violent events have significantly lessened inequality. The "Four Horsemen" of leveling—mass-mobilization warfare, transformative revolutions, state collapse, and catastrophic plagues—have repeatedly destroyed the fortunes of the rich. Scheidel identifies and examines these processes, from the crises of the earliest civilizations to the cataclysmic world wars and communist revolutions of the twentieth century. Today, the violence that reduced inequality in the past seems to have diminished, and that is a good thing. But it casts serious doubt on the prospects for a more equal future.

An essential contribution to the debate about inequality, The Great Leveler provides important new insights about why inequality is so persistent—and why it is unlikely to decline anytime soon.
