This has been a really great thread. Wish that I'd saved my Mount Rushmore for later because I have learned a lot.

Challenging myself to nominate a foursome not previously mentioned in the thread:

The Shadows - Apache (#1 in UK/IR/NZ/SA)

---(Honorable mention here to the Incredible Bongo Band version.)

Steely Dan - East St. Louis Toodle-Oo (On "Pretzel Logic," #8 US Album)
---A personal favorite, and a nice Duke Ellington rendition.

Emerson/Lake/Palmer - Fanfare for the Common Man (#2 in UK)
--- ELP's other Copland rendition, Hoedown, would also be a worthy choice.

Bob James - Angela/Theme from "Taxi" (On "Touchdown," #1 US Jazz Album)

Some I'm surprised nobody has mentioned:

Metallica - Orion
Theme from Magnum P.I.
Theme from A-Team
Imperial March from Star Wars

If the last one doesn't fit, then just the Star Wars theme; I know that got airplay when the movie came out.

I kinda feel there could be a category or two for just theme songs alone. Maybe this should be nontheme songs

That is a good one! That song is like 5 minutes of constant, epic intro, and I keep waiting for it to settle into something that never happens.

Here's a sludgy 70s version of this classic:

I don't think we've hit this one yet either. I remember hearing it a bunch when I was a kid and it always stuck out to me with the corny/awesome harpsichords and harps and shit.

+1. Though I'd imagine several of the excellent new entries defied most peoples' internal definitions of "pop" and as such weren't considered. And this is not at all to discourage said submissions or say that they are wrong / bad - I heartily agree with Quik's initial sentiment of keeping this to the user's imagination so we don't bog it down into a semantic discussion.
