Oh I am in.

*Edit* I have two quick picks and I am going to play two of my own numbers for a total of a 4 dollar play. Hmm might throw in another buck and make it a clean 5.

Not to be cheap but I want to win it and not spend too much. What would your mega ball be?

Yes that strategy is guaranteed to win. All the time. Proven by board members.

Well, technically speaking, the odds of any seven numbers coming up sequentially would be the longest shot of all.

That, actually...I wonder how that would affect the likelihood of people playing Powerball or other lottery-style games, if the numbers you picked had to be sequential rather than just five (or six) plus the 'mega' number.

I'll set aside the first exchange, assuming it was just for sport.

Not sure what you could possibly mean here. If you forced every ticket to include a simple sequential series of numbers, don't you completely change the nature of the game? Would you allow the winning numbers to come from the traditional method, and just ensure that very nearly every time nobody would hit the winning series? What would be the point of that?

Oh, you absolutely would change the nature of the game.

What I was wondering is, your 'regular' lottery players tend to come from two groups of people - the ones who toss a few bucks in each week for shits and giggles, and the ones who see the lottery jackpot as the ladder up and out. The ones so convinced they're going to win that they bet the rent money or what-have-you on Powerball tickets.

If you change the nature of the jackpot requirements, does that change the core players' desire to continue playing, or are those 'hooked fish' anyway?

Not seriously suggesting that they change the game, just wondering - if they DID change it in that way, how would it affect participation? That's all.

You would think participation would necessarily go down -- the odds of winning remain the same, but now you're looking at sharing the prize with 1/48th or whatever of the playing population if you do win. However, since you would go so long (i.e. damn near forever) with no winner, the prize amount could become large enough to balance that out. While I pretty much think that you'd be discouraging a lot of people with such a high probability of not even being able to win if only they had picked the right numbers, you might get a small bump of people buying all of the combinations they're able to, since there would not be many.

I'm willing to bet a significant number of people who play the lottery on a regular basis don't know there is a difference between the numbers being picked sequentially or not and, more importantly for the purposes of your question (if I am indeed following correctly), don't care. They don't call it a stupid man's tax for nothing.

My sequential numbers are just as likely to win as any other set of numbers. It just illustrates how unlikely any given set of numbers is to win. You look at 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 and realize that would practically never happen. But any other set of numbers is just as unlikely to win.

They may not know the difference, but wouldn't you think that if something non-sequential comes up, most of them are going to realize they had no chance to win with that outcome? I guess I'm thinking of a situation where the system was changed to something like this -- maybe if it had always been this way, you could be right.

See, I just assumed he was making a joke. I mean, come on.

There actually is probably a lower EV of submitting a ticket with any sort of rationality to it, due to the increased likelihood of duplicating someone else's ticket and being forced to share the winnings. maybe the same with using numerals 31 and under, for obvious reasons. A side topic, I think we've explored it here before some time ago.

But I can't imagine anyone feeling confident enough in the thinking that one series or numbers is actually less likely than any other to be willing to post as much. Honestly now.

I think you and Sack are talking about two different things. If I'm reading his correctly, you have to pick the sequence or order correctly, but it doesn't have to be a straight numerical sequence (which is how I read yours).

Oh! I think you're right. Then I agree with you even more -- most lottery players probably don't care how astronomical the odds are, as long as they have a chance. Although the fact that there would be much fewer stories of winners floating around might discourage a few potential players.

One could actually make an argument that picking 1 through 7 might be very slightly more likely to win than other sequences, if you assumed the balls all weighed the same without ink. The single digit balls could be slightly lighter due to less ink, and thus be very slightly more likely to pop up and be selected.

If you really wanted to argue something stupid.

As a matter of trivia, I won a number of years ago using my birthday numbers on a ticket that I didn't buy. I had a friend who was a lottery nut, and he bought me a Pick 3 ticket (or something like that) for my birthday using the date for the numbers. I wasn't going to bother even checking to see if I'd won, but he left me a message on my machine a couple days later telling me not to throw the ticket away because the numbers hit. It was for $300 or so, which was pretty nice for a guy who doesn't really buy lottery tickets except for very rare occasions when I cave in for the small entertainment value that daydreaming about winning provides.

So, I'm one of the few people out there who is actually somewhat up on the lottery moneywise. At my current rate of buying tickets once in a blue moon, I'll probably end up breaking even, if I live another 50 years or so.
