Eh, it's kind of a fine line sometimes.

I have no problem with thanking them all in addition to those who are the actual subject of the day. I mean, it's not like we can really do the former enough. For that matter, perhaps, it's not like we can really do the latter adequately.

If somebody is taking it a step further, what harm does it cause? Seems like this is a +1 type of thing rather than a -2.

My father would've said it is better than a spit in the eye, which is what he got when he came back from Vietnam.

I almost invoked this very thing, I suspect it's at least a subconscious part of why many include all who served in their commemorations of Memorial Day.

I actually had a friend go on a rant about this yesterday.
He is a Marine lifer.

We were at a cookout and someone through a happy memorial day line out and dude literally kind of freaked.

Went all the way to "We have a veterans day it is in November. Memorial day shouldnt be happy. Its the sadest day of the year to remember all the fallen heroes...."

It was one of those moments..where no one could rebut what he said but it was clear he went way overboard.

When somebody is expressing positive sentiment, even on the wrong day, I would think that ranting about it is not going to endear yourself to them at all. Might have been much more productive to thank them, remind them to think of the fallen soldiers, and ask that they thank a veteran when Veterans Day comes along in 5 1/2 months. You accomplish more with honey than vinegar and piss.

They may, unfortunately, remember that particular veteran next time and be inspired to keep their mouths shut instead.

I just changed the VVT Actuator Solenoids on my Saturn (with a little help from my roommate). Feels pretty good to get it done myself...let alone save hundreds of dollars from dealership labor rates in the bargain.

Interesting, perhaps, that I've seen more attention in my social media circles focused on class envy of the Cali shooter having a "new BMW" than on topic of guns or mental health.

We were out and about doing the normal weekend errands earlier on and we got stuck behind a minivan thing owned by a DC United fan (hopefully) with the vanity plate "4DCUNTD".

Surprised that got past the censors.

The Internet has failed me. I know of two job positions (in very different places) that have become open and I can't find out where the two people in those positions currently are going. One of them will be local news (the Finance Director is leaving) so I'm sure I will find out. And the other will come out as the guy is very active on social media. But still the Internet should be able to feed my need for instant gratification in this instance...

That's Clancy freakin' Brown. He does a lot of great voice work in a lot of big name cartoons. Lex Luthor might be his best, tho.

I submit that the Browns should make it part of his contract that he is forced to dress like the Cleveland Brownie, with big pointy shoes and a long orange stocking cap, whenever not in uniform:

Back from a 10-day vacation in the Balkans, and it seems like this place is a lot slower than even usual. Just out of curiosity I looked up the stats for total post counts over the last few months of May - this is across all sub-forums.

May 2014: 7,731
May 2013: 11,346
May 2012: 13,756
May 2011: 13,837
May 2010: 15,646
May 2009: 29,032
May 2008: 19,372
May 2007: 20,057
May 2006: 26,586

The last few months are just as bad. The new game hasn't brought new interest to the board. I'm glad I found reddit in the interim, since its like a mega-version of what FOFC used to be. Still, I miss all the old posters. On the other hand, this place has probably lasted way longer than it has any right to, I guess.

Yeah - reddit's got some interesting stuff in amongst all the noise.

That's a pretty shocking dropoff though...wow.

And on top of that, the 7731 in May this year is inflated due to having the NFL Draft in May this year rather than April.

I think we are all just getting older, having kids, advancing in careers, going to bed earlier, etc...all stuff that takes away from time to read threads and post.

Like Molson said, this place has survived longer than it had any business doing, I don't visit other forums, but it seems to me that this is a very unique place.

25 is the age cutoff for being able to pull off basketball jerseys as a guy IMO.

Older than that, and guys tend to look either stupid, or like douchebros.

Then it gets cool again at 75. Or at least, I think it'd be awesome if a 75-year old guy wore a basketball jersey.

Those few seconds when you click a link and for whatever reason it doesn't take, and you sit there waiting before realizing the page isn't going anywhere. I don't know.

Why are my knives not long enough to slice through a standard tomato? And it's not just that they aren't, it's that I get fooled every time. I slice through and I think it's going to slide right off and onto my plate or sandwich or what have you, and then it just doesn't, or worse, it hangs there and I have to eff with it some more. Fuck you knives and fuck you tomatoes.

But here's the thing, if I dirty up a chopping block just to chop a tomato, or I buy a special knife just for chopping tomatoes, then the tomato wins.

There's plenty more places now on the net where people don't have to put up with that and it wouldn't surprise me if more and more of the traffic from here continues to flow to those places as people get older and have less free time and correspondingly less desire to put up with that sort of thing.

I basically only come here at this point because I feel like I know so many of you, that I have you in mind as I think of specific topics. Likewise, if I "argue" on here, I don't feel like I'm being a prick about it like I would on some other board where I and the other people are basically nameless. So I could think Lathum is completely nuts on one topic and feel comfortable going back and forth in a respectful way, because on another topic we'll feel the same.
