Is that more or less than a bajillion?

I know it's more than a butt-load, but perhaps less than a shit load. Anyway, that's a lot.

It's funny but this just reminds of a neat little Arthur C. Clarke short story I read, in which a bunch of Buddhist monks in the Himalayas were counting and registering the stars in the heavens. It was their belief that when all the stars were counted, pure and total understanding of the world would be achieved (or something like that), and the universe would come to an end.

The monks ended up taking advantage of technology and rented out a big (think like a "Cray" size) computer to help them with their chore. It helped them do the job a hundred times faster. The two computer technicians who went along scoffed at the notion of what the monks were trying to achieve, of course, since they believed the universe couldn't be based on something so flimsy or non-scientific.

The months went by and the monks finally were close to wrapping up their counting. So they let the technicians head back to civizilation (down a mountain path from the monastery, of course). As you might of guessed already, the story ends when one of the technicians looks up at the night sky in disbelief--and watches as stars start disappearing, one-by-one.

I hope Clarke and those monks are wrong.
