What was your favorite vacation?
I am looking forward to going on vacation in less than two weeks. My wife and I are driving down to Wildwood, NJ for a week of relaxation on the beach, and walking the boardwalk. I have not been there since a was much younger, with my parents and my cousin, and I still remember that as a great, great vacation.
So, tell us what your best vacation was. Where did you go? Who did you go with? Did you do anything unique? What made it so special?

My favorite vacation was the FOFC field trip to your pants. The best part was when Fritz stood up and yelled "Thar she blows!!"

I went to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. when I was 9 and had a great time going through all the museums and monuments. I was a huge history freak at the time and that was an incredible trip.

Went to Disney World on my honeymoon about 5 years ago. Going without kids in the dead period of fall made just about everything accessible. It was great.
Now, I'm looking forward to going with my kids in a few years (when they're old enough to not be grumpy/sleepy all the time).

I spent last Christmas in England. All expence paid trip thanks to my medical insurance. I had to deal with hobbing around on crutches after my surgery, but it was still a great trip.

my wife and I have been to DC twice, and are thinking of going again next spring for our 5 year anniversary.
Disney is always cool - we actually have a Disney fund started for when the kid(s) are old enough to enjoy it. best vacation I took...well, it was more like a trip. many years ago (I was probably 13, 14) when we were living in Canada my dad and I went on a 3-day canoe trip at Algonquin park (with 2 other dads and their sons). It was a lot of fun. It was definitely "roughing it" (everything we needed we had to carry with us - we had to portage around rapids, fend off mosquitos, try to find a way to light a fire in the pouring rain...but it was a great experience. It was an awesome time, and easily one of the best memories I have of me and my father.

I've been to DC a couple of times, and they were quite enjoyable trips, but by far the most fun I've had on a vactation was on taking a 5 day cruise a couple of years ago. I hope someday I'll have the money to do it again (but maybe a few days longer this time).

Our honeymoon was great, and the entire thing went off without a hitch.
We flew into LA, stayed overnight on Hollywood Boulevard, hit Universal Studios the next day, and drove to Santa Barbara that night. Stayed in SB that night, then drove up US 1 to Monterrey/Carmel the following afternoon. Stayed there for 2 nights. Then drove to Lake Tahoe for 4th of July weekend. Took a dinner cruise on the lake, went horseback riding in the mountains, and watched the fireworks over the lake. Then drove to San Francisco and did all of the touristy stuff for 3 days, plus drove up Mount Tam and checked out Stinson Beach (my aunts live in the area and I used to go there on summer visits). Flew out of SF 9 days after we landed in LA. Perfect trip, although we did a fair amount of traveling, as you can imagine.

For the five years my wife and I were (happily) married we took a two week road trip for our anniverary, starting with the honeymoon. The first trip was the best (7,000 in two weeks!) but all of them were good.
Favorite destinations: The Kennebunks in Maine, Cape Cod, Prince Edward Island, Halifax, Kingston (ontario), Wilmington NC, Savannah.

My favorite vacation is one that now my family actually frequently does each year (or at least for the past 4 years since I lived in the area)..
Go down to Cooperstown on a friday night, stay in one of the overpaid, stuffy hotels nearby, but then spend all weekend there looking at the exhibits. I usually try to time my trips when interesting side events are scheduled too. For those who love baseball history, or want to know more about baseball history, it is excellent. (just a pain in the butt to drive to - in the middle of nowhere.) |

You're VACATIONING in New Jersey????? My favorite trip of all time was going down to San Antonio with one of my friends our senior year in high school. We stayed with his grandparents, which normally wouldn't sound like much fun, except for two reasons: they were exceedingly rich, and exceedingly cool. I got to fly an airplane (it was a Cessena, but hey, I still flew it), sit courtside at a Spurs game, and basically have anything I wanted for free. Good times, and San Antonio is a great city. Oh and I got solicited by dirty whores in Mexico but thats a whole other story. |

I used to enjoy Wildwood as a kid. Our first vacation there was the summer Empire Strikes Back came out, I think we saw it down there (there were kids in the house next door to us that ran around calling everybody "Fuzzballs" the entire week). After about 5 years or so we started going to the Poconos instead, to "Daniels Top-O-The Poconos". Could have had a good time with some twins from Elizabethtown, NJ one year - they asked me to take a walk with them to a nearby stream - but I messed things up (hey, I was 13).

My family owned a cabin on Deep Creek Lake, MD. We used to spend summers up there. One year, there was some big international whitewater rafting competition going on at a nearby river, and while I was out fishing one morning, some swedish chick decided to go skinny-dipping off her dock, basically less than 50 feet from where my boat was anchored. She knew I and my brothers were there - she even waved at us.
As a 13 year old kid, it was probably the best day of my life. Last edited by Franklinnoble : 08-21-2003 at 01:04 PM. |

My favorite Vacation was the first one when Chevy Chase and company were trying to get to Wally World. The bit with the dead body on top of the car was great.

I liked the Christmas Vacation. Actually Disney World, New York City and Boston have been my favorite vacations, in that order too. I only spent three days in NYC though, so there was so much I still didn't get to see.

My trip with my wife to Kauai. Not to be confused with the trip to Maui on our anniversary I mentioned in another post.
Kauai is far and away the nicest of all the Hawaiian Islands. Not real crowded and the most beautiful place I have ever seen.

Best vacation I took as a kid, was a trip that we took from our home in Minneapolis to Yellowstone and back. It lasted either two or three weeks and we had a blast.
i was only four, but I still remember Mt. Rushmore (very, very impressive to a 4-year old), Old Faithful, and sleeping in a pop-up camper in several state parks along the way. Actually, a freak hailstorm cut our Old Faithful excursion a bit short. I remember lots of running and the smell of sulfur in the air. Actually quite frightening to a 4-year old. Either way, it was a blast. Best vacation as an adult was a week my wife and I spent in Key West. I did absolutely nothing and enjoyed every minute of it. If you are ever down there, try conch fritters; they are delicious. Also, real key lime pie is yellow, not green. Now I'm hungry. Time to get a snack. |

The best trip I ever took was when I went to cover the Mint 400 race in Vegas, along with my attorney. We had a suitcase full of every drug you could find, uppers, downers, screamers, laughers. Luckily I have an audio tape of most of the memories.

About 7 years ago, my best friend and I hopped into his truck and drove from ye olde Portland, OR to New Orleans. Along the way, we stopped to stay with friends going to grad school in California and New Mexico. To get to N.O., we took the long way cutting down accross the coast, and then heading west through the SW. Some highlights on the way down were Vegas, the Grand Canyon, and a couple crazy Mexican border towns ...I swear we were driving through Texas for what seemed like a week.
On the way back to Oregon, we pretty much cut it straight through the middle of the country, and though a lot of it was pretty unexciting, there's also some beautiful country in there, Utah is freaking gorgeous, which was a total surprise to me. We camped outdoors whenever we could, and really took our time poking around and trying to check out a little of each state we came through. Overall, an excellent trip.

Now that Split Pea Soup stole my joke ...
I'll have to say my honeymoon. Flew to Denver, spent a few days in the Rockies (Aspen, Glenwood Springs Hot Springs Pool), then spent the next few days in a bunch of National Parks (Arches, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Grand Canyon). I'll agree with thesloppy: Utah, at least most of what we saw, is gorgeous. We took the long way from the north rim of the Grand Canyon to Vegas to see some friends in Flagstaff and go to Hoover Dam. Then, 3 nights in Vegas to finish. A nice honeymoon suite at Mandalay Bay for $79 a night ... too bad it had to end! |

Drove through Yellowstone (camping in a tent, woke up to snowstorm) to Seattle.
Flew to Alaska where we spent 3 weeks (wife's brother lived in Anchorage) and drove their mini camper all over. Camped out at Denali (McKinley) and got close up views without cloudcover (unusually clear) of mountain and lots of wildlife. Picnics in the light at 2 am are fun, and interesting. Back to Seattle, where we picked up our car and drove all the way down the ocean highway. Stopped at SF, LA, SD, among other places. Headed west. Stopped in Vegas. Farther west, went to Carlsbad and saw the bats fly. Home to Texas. When we got home, found out my wife was pregnant. Apparently, the 'warming-up' in the tent never got quite to 'termination' temperature to kill the little bastards. Killer vacation, in any and all aspects you can think of. (sorry to end with a preposition )
