A quick look at three major news sites

CNN:

An ominous picture of the White House against a cloudy background with the CIA logo superimposed over it.
Headline: "Leak investigation focuses on White House, CIA"

MSNBC:

A neutral picture of Bush.
Headline: "Bush Orders Full Cooperation with Justice Department Probe into Leak of CIA Analyst's ID"

FOXNEWS:

A picture of Bush looking serious and ready to solve a problem.
Headline (quoting Bush): "I want to know who the leakers are."


One story. Three perspectives. Not any real comment from my end--just something that I thought was interesting given common perceptions about the political slant of the networks.

For sure. Many other countries are much better. For instance, if this happened in Canada the headline would be "Ham, half priced through Saturday!" Of course there would be a second headline underneath it that would say something like "Jambon, moitié eue le prix indiqué par samedi!"

Actually, it would be "Leafs third-string goalie injures pinkie in pre-season game", but you're close.

But on page 24, there'd be a picture of Chretien looking serious and ready to solve a problem. Headline (quoting Chretien): "Da leek-urs, I do not know who did tha leaking thing. I want to know, but I kannat know uf all da leaking, you know?"

The more things change:

FOXNEWS:

Picture of Rumsfeld pointing his finger and looking determined and text indicating that he will "do what is necessary" to right the wrongs at Abu Gharib prison.

MSNBC:

Picture of Rumsfeld looking contrite and the headline "Deepest Apology"

CNN:

Picture of Rumsfeld holding his hands up and text indicating that "lots more pictures of abuse exist."


Again, no comment from me. Just an interesting look at one story through three "objective" news sources.

But the problem with such an observation is that the pictures/captions/headlines change about every half hour or so. Fox had the MSNBC one a little while ago. Also, a while back while the Condi thing was brewing, Fox had the scowling pictures just as much as the others. They were just rotated so they can get more hits.

But I know your point. Fox and MSNBC seem to be within a similar range but why does CNN have to consistently be slightly further left when they are the supposedly the biggest of the three (we don't talk about ABC and CBS)? Fox does have some left-leaning articles and columnists but they also have some right-leaning ones as well. Does the presense of any right-leaning columnists and articles makes Fox (or whomever) a right-winger site???

Are we so used to seeing and expecting only left-leaning journalism (as in the case of the other major networks) that any such aberrations make a network or site to be ridiculed?

Fwiw, I only go to Fox daily because their site is much cleaner and not cluttered with graphics junks and mismatched frames like CNN, et al.

Don't laugh but cspan isn't all that bad just to find out what was said and reactions and such. Plus it's not a messy site.

I don't know about the site, but FoxNews is consistently right-wing, the counter balance to CNN's left-wing (if we ignore ABC/CBS/NBC.) MSNBC "doesn't know what the hell it wants to be."
