1000 tak Airulf. Jeg bor "desværer" i Norge, men kommer fra Helsingør. Jeg var faktiskt til træning med Kronborg Knights et par gange i 1999.

Yes, I don't know what you did to them to cause them to say such harsh things, but it must be bad. I truly hope that the thing about ping pong balls, you standing on your head and a target 16 feet away isn't true. If it is, my record is meaningless.

Not that anyone was serious about snagging a copy, but Valve is understandably Uber Pissed about this and will probably show up at your house and rip your balls off personally.
I can't believe that they were hacked like this, but I think I'm more suprised that they can't track this. Pretty smart them haXors.

It was just the source code. UnCompiled and without levels or characters.
But it screws them up the rear chute, they were going to license this technology for other FPS. Now no one will want it, as it is going to be cracked six ways to sunday.

If it's the source code then there is nothing to crack...now, looking at the code and trying to figure out what the hell it all does and how it does it is something else. And it's not that hard to look at a competitor's product and see if they are using technology that you have copyrighted. Besides, when companies license an engine like that, they also get use of the editors and propietary "stuff". SO just having the source code is not going to do a company good because their programmers would have to dig into the code and effectivly reverse engineer it, and that would take way too much time for a game company on a budget and time table. |

What I meant is that enterprising computer geeks will be able to cheat the system a bit. From the discussion on the HL2 boards, it's fairly well commented code.. so you'll know where the 3D engine code is, enemy AI, that kind of thing

From BG's link..
"Our exclusive visit with Gabe Newell and Valve Software did confirm that only a SMALL PORTION of the source code was taken. This is different than most of the reports. The entire source was not taken. Straight from Gabe Newell." Well that's good news, then. One thing I was worried about was the possibility of someone making cheats and hacks for online play. That might not be able to happen now. |

Yeah, I hope so.
I still get this feeling that Gabe is pulling a fast one, somehow. I am very suprised that they would admit so loudly that any code was stolen. You would think that would be hush-hush government type stuff. on the other hand, this game is going to sell well no matter what, so I don't really see any motive for him to pull any wool over anyone's eyes. They need ZERO gimicks for this as EVERYONE has heard of the game (HL, CS, HL2, at least some form). Personally, I disregard coincidences off-the-bat, and will only accept them if all the proof points that way. To me, having the code stolen and the game possibly pushed off until April a bit coincidental especially when it was slated for Sept 30 release (guaranteed by gabe) and that slipped. Regardless of what nonsense is occuring, if this game doesn't ship this year, I will be very disappointed. After seeing that HUGE vid from E3, I almost wet my panties. Oh well. Guess I'll keep dry until further notice.

The same kind of thing happened with the source code is of Quake II (at least that's what I think the game was). The source code was stolen, but they weren't concerned for a large part because no major or comercial products could be made with it without the developer getting their ass in major legal trouble.

I must have watched that E3 footage several dozen times. Guess I'll just have to sit and watch it more and wait...I've been waiting fo rthis one for a LONG time too. And now since Doom III was also pushed to next year, it sucks...more and more games I thought I'd have by the year's end are getting pushed back and back and back... I just hope Knights of the Old Republic can hit it's mid November release. Another I've been eagerly waiting for (NO! I will not get an XBox to play a PC game. Blasphemy!! ) Last edited by sabotai : 10-07-2003 at 05:14 PM. |

I found out the whole story about only a small portion of the source code was leaked is false. The whole thing got taken.

Apparently the hackers have already released a playable beta version, and claim to have a pre-gold version ready to go today.

Sounds like the hackers will release a full version before the developers.

Aye. I saw a screenshot of it. Now, the thing is, they didn't get, to my knowledge, any of the graphics, sound, maps, ect. However, since they have the source, they know all of the file formats and could easily make maps for it, they know what kind of sounds to use, what the model and texture formats are, etc. They could easily create HL2 game with what they have in a short time.
Of course, any bugs and unfinished parts of the code are also still there, so I don't think what they could release would be classified as "playable". |

I am still amazed that this can happen to a developer such as Valve. I think it is funny that the apparent delivery system of the haXor software was Outlook. F'ing Microsoft.

Leak the code, get free Beta testing, have user created mods way before a release date and then release a nice polished version for everyone in April...
doesn't sound like a bad plan on the surface...

This is most definately not a gimick. Had it been, there would have been a leak on a much smaller scale. The source code package is complete. Not only does it contain all of the propreiary code for their game engine, but also the libraries that they had licensed. and their batch files used to compile the game; even all of the comments are there There is no reason for a company to release that muce information just to gain a few months of development time. The major thing a 3d shooter has going for it is its graphics engine. That is what is going to seperate the good games from the bad. The fact that their engine code is in the stolen source tells me that it is not just some ploy. True, a rival company could not take what they did and use it verbatim, but they now have an tremendous reference as to how to make a high performance engine. Their rivals (who I am sure have found copies, either officially as a company or developers acting independently) have most likely already obtained it and are looking through how Halflife does things. 90% of development is design (either formal or seat of the pants as you go along), and it is the most difficult. They're now faced with the very real problem of having to radically change the game in the next 6 months, enough so that they will not have to worry about modified source code versions being out there that will ruin the multi-player game experiencce, and therefore the value of the game. It would take changes to only a handful of lines of code (for example) to allow a modified client to always allow cheats, even when the server does not allow them. |
