Donnie Darko To Be Altered And Re-Released

http://http://www.scifi.com/scifiwir.../10/14.00.film

Richard Kelly, director of the cult SF movie Donnie Darko, told SCI FI Wire that his recently finished extended cut of the movie, which is due in theaters later this year, dramatically alters the movie. "[Newmarket Films] is re-releasing it, and they're letting me have a director's cut, which will come out this summer in theaters, that I just finished today," Kelly said in an interview at the Saturn Awards on May 5. "No one's seen it yet, but it will definitely be a completely new experience as a film. It will probably surprise and shock even the most hardcore fans."

Kelly said that completing this new version was an opportunity to fully develop all of his original ideas for the film and create what he considered a complete rendering of Donnie Darko. "Ultimately, for me, I'm just psyched I finally got to finish the film," he said. "While I'm proud of the theatrical cut, I feel like there were some elements that were never fully realized that I'm excited to be able to realize now. It's been a dream come true, and I'm really lucky to have gotten to do it."

Donnie Darko stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a disaffected teen who narrowly escapes death, then finds himself taking instructions for increasingly destructive behavior from a 6-foot rabbit. Kelly said that the director's cut will premiere at the end of May, and the film's subsequent distribution will be based upon initial reactions from filmgoers at the upcoming Seattle Film Festival. "They're going to test it in Seattle May 29th, and they're going to determine, like, a week later what the audience is, if they can really sell it to the multiplexes and to the suburban crowd," Kelly said. "The anticipation would be that maybe it could cross over and become more than just a cult film. It might become more of a mainstream success."

Interesting. I just saw this the other day at a midnight showing in a theatre in town. I wonder what there is to add.

I've never seen it. Given the above synopsis, I don't think I've missed much.

Its like a sci-fi 80's teen comedy. Check it out. Definately worth watching.

I've seen the movie, I'm just confused by you referring to it as an 80's teen sci-fi comedy. Unless I'm missing something, which is probable.

Am I the only one who immediately thought "Darko Mcilic" (or however the hell his last name is spelled) when I saw the thread title?

Actually Bowie had some good seasons, I think. Injuries were his real downfall.

It's set in the 80's. It definitely has heavy sci-fi elements (but not really in a visual sense, more of a theoretical sense).

I'll probably go see it. I wouldn't mind seeing it in the theatre.

Wasn't Bowie taken before Jordan?

And who exactly was taken below Mcilic that you're high on? If I remember, it went LeBron-'Melo-Darko.

actually it was lebron-darko-melo-bosh-wade

And I think that all 3 of the guys taken directly after Darko will end up being better than him in the long run. Of course I don't run an NBA Team and have no real insight into any of these players, it's just my rather unifmormed opinion.

If you watch the DVD w/ and w/o the director's commentary you see 2 entirely different movies. His comments (i.e., what a scene was supposed to be conveying) don't come across on screen very well which is a sign of poor story-telling, IMHO.

With that said, i'm happy to have it in my DVD collection and I'll probably purchase this new version as well.

Huh. Well, if Darko went before Melo, then the comparison actually makes sense to me. I just always thought that the Pistons wound up with the 3rd selection.
