TCY - Let's Go Duke! Let's Go Duke! (Year 5)

Welcome to year 5 of my Duke Blue Devils TCY Dynasty. Feedback is always welcome.

Year 1 (2-10)
Year 2 (2-9)
Year 3 (3-8)
Year 4 (6-5)

Email Time
C Gilbert Eccles has been made academically ineligible for the upcoming season for failing a class.

And our worst fears come true - DE Mark Strand has left the team because of his hip injury.

Ralph Mills has retired from his position of Southwest region scout.

Kerry Jorgensen has retired from his position of offensive coordinator.

Hirings
Offensive Coordinator - Steven Easter (32) We totally lucked out here. The top O coordinator in all the land was available. His worst rating is "good" in QB development...otherwise he has reds and yellows in every other category.

Defensive Coordinator - Sammy Terry (65) We just went for a bit of an upgrade here in Terry. Nothing special here...we just wait for a better one to become available next year.

We also hired new scouts in 4 different regions.

Scheduling
Code:
2007 Duke Schedule Rival: North Carolina Stadium Capacity: 33,900 Season Tickets Sold: 10,300 Week Opponent 1 at Vanderbilt 2 (43) OREGON 3 NORTHWESTERN $$6 MARYLAND $$7 at (30) Virginia $$8 at Clemson $$9 WAKE FOREST $$10 (4) FLORIDA STATE $$11 at (11) North Carolina Stat $$12 at (33) Georgia Tech $$13 NORTH CAROLINA
Vandy was a late add as a couple of teams rejected our offers to play them on the road?? C'mon. We accepted a home and home with Oregon in Week 2...it will be nice to see where we rank against top competition outside of the ACC. Then of course the annual game vs Northwestern.

Even though our overall recruiting class rating dropped to #40 last year...we were able to land three players with the highest future potential yet. Donovan Barlow is our first 100 potential player and we're also excited to land Matt Avalos.

Kimball - We owe a lot of our success to or Sr QB. This year should be his biggest.
Cooley - Set school records in rushing yards (650) and TD's (9) last year.
Castillo - This 3rd year starter had 29 catches last year for 268 yards.
McGarrahan - Has picked up All-ACC 2nd team honors each of the last two seasons.
Huffman - Huffman has become our #1 WR. He has 72 catches in the last two years.
Duncan - Duncan's catches went down last year (17) but he's still a threat.
O-Line - The best part about the line is that it's young and all starters will be back next year.

Wayt - Strand's replacement. Has a big load to carry. Hopefully he can produce.

Still not getting the love we deserve but we're not in the pre-season 100's anymore. FSU predicted to finish top of the league again for the 3rd straight year. In all the other careers I've played they always become sub-par...surprising that they are still near the top.

UCLA despite winning the championship last year is only predicted for 4th. Michigan is back on top once again.

Week 1

Duke (0-0) at Vanderbilt (0-0) (-1) No TV

Last Meeting: 30-15 Blue Devils back in year 1

Key Injuries - None

Preview - Vandy features OLB Cris Minnis who was first team all-SEC last year. On offense they also run the Pro Formation much like the Devils. These two teams are two total different teams as compared to the first time we played back in year one.

You know if finally feels good to dominate a team. Vandy has some decent players and we took it to them on the road. Matt Kimball had probably his most effecient game of his career passing at an 80% clip with 4 TD's and no Int's. The only downside to this game was our rushing attack and the amount of penalties that were called...14 on us and 18 for 170 yards for Vandy.

Next up - Oregon at home.

Week 2

#13 Oregon (1-0) at #18 Duke (1-0) (-6) TV3

First career meeting.

Key Injuries - None

Preview - Well...it pays to play and play well in the first week of the season. Our win has boosted us up to #18 in the country. But we have our hands full as Oregon...who beat Navy 38-7 in week 1...is #13. They run the Double Wing offens which is rare in these parts...and they are led by a very powerful RB Bryce Gutierrez. He had 100 yards in 33 carries in the first game...so it looks like they could feed him a lot. This is our first time on TV3...let's see what we can do in our toughest non-conference game ever.

This game was just an ugly one for us. Good defense from the Ducks...too many penalties and good 4th down conversions by Oregon just led to our demise. We finally decide to make a run in this game with 8 minutes left in the 4th but it was a little too late. Oregon wasn't spectacular in their play but steady as they relied on their horse Gutierrez who had another 100 yard day.

Next up - Back at home vs Northwestern.

#46 Northwestern (1-0) at Duke (1-1) (-3)

Last meeting: Northwestern with the win 32-25

Key Injuries
TE Myron McGarrahan - Dislocated Elbow - Out 9 weeks

Preview - Games with Northwestern have always been competitive. Two years ago we came back to win by 3...24-21...then last year Northwestern took it to us in Durham 32-25. RB Lamar Newman is back for his 4th year as starting RB for the Cats. Last year he was the key to them controlling the game as he rushed for 144 yards on 30 carries and a TD. We must turn it around from our bad offensive showing last week vs Oregon. Matt Kimball has yet to throw in Int this year in the first two games. And not to forget the injury sustained by our 2 time all-ACC TE McGarrahan going down for the majority of the season with a dislocated elbow. Ray Holliday a decent back-up will have to step up in his place.

After a sluggish first quarter we got on track with 21 2nd quarter points and cruised to a 35 point victory. Kimball was solid again going 17-26 for 252 and 3 TD's. He did throw his first Int of the year however. On the flipside..it's apparent that we don't have much of a running game this year. On the injury front it appears that we may have lost Huffman for some considerable time as he was injured during the game.

Next - Bye week.

WR Kerry Huffman - Broken Jaw - Out 14 weeks
TE Myron McGarrahan - Dislocated Elbow - Out 8 weeks

Well to my surprise we not only lost Huffman for the rest of the season but we also lost Duncan for 4 weeks with knee surgery. Duncan had to have surgery on the same knee last year that forced him to miss 4 games. Luckily we have back to back bye weeks. We've now lost our three top receivers to major injuries.

Maryland (2-1) at Duke (2-1) (-14) No TV

Last season: 21-17 Blue Devils

Key Injuries
WR Vincent Duncan - Arthroscopic Knee Surgery - Questionable 1 weeks
WR Kerry Huffman - Broken Jaw - Out 12 weeks
TE Myron McGarrahan - Dislocated Elbow - Out 5 weeks

Preview - We got our first ACC win against the Terps last year. And now this year we are 14 point favorites...that's kinda scary. We should get Duncan back for this game...so now we're only missing two big guns in the passing game. The Maryland passing game has been non-existant so far this year. So Mickey Carlisle has only thrown for 382 yards in the first three games on 50% passing. And they're offense as a whole has struggled as they are averaging 12.3 ppg...116th in the nation. Meanwhile we are averaging 33.3 ppg...24th in the nation.

No offense to Maryland but this was a terrible loss. We were up 21-3 at one point in the game and then the Terps score 22 points in the last 17 minutes of the game to win it by 4. So much for the bad Terp passing offense as they pass for 263 yards meanwhile we throw for more but throw 3 Int's. And how did we rush for 184 yards? This loss is seriously depressing. And I think we lost Derrick Turnbull for an extended period of time now. I don't think this is gonna be our season.

Next up - at Virginia.

I think I may have shot a little too high in recruiting as I have already lost 4 players. But we secured the 2nd best Punter in the nation. Nice consolation I guess.

What a terrible time for a browser error. Right after a laughable game and after I had everything typed out. Anyway...the game was a joke and the 28 points that we gave up in the 4th were even a bigger joke.

Duke (2-3) (-5) at Clemson (2-3) No TV

Last season: 21-12 Dukies

Key Injuries
WR Kerry Huffman - Broken Jaw - Out 10 weeks
CB Derrick Turnbull - High Ankle Sprain - Out 23 weeks
TE Myron McGarrahan - Dislocated Elbow - Questionable 3 weeks

Preview - Well after my browser shut down on me in my last post...I should mention the we lost Turnbull for the rest of his career in the Maryland game. So our pass D will be tested for the rest of the season. We absolutely need this game and the next game vs Wake Forest for that matter. Clemson has fallen on hard times and we need to take advantage of that. We may have to risk playing McGarrahan just because we can't afford to lose these next two games.

We needed this one big time and we came up big. Matt Kimball had the best game of his career as he passed for a school record 403 yards on 26 or 34 and 4 TD's. Myron McGarrahan came off his injury and scored the first TD to get us going...but I think he may have re-injured himself as Holliday had to finish the game for us. On defense CB Ellis Kadletz...who is stepping in for the injured Turnbull picked off his 2nd pass in as many games. And although we gave up 332 yards...we picked up up our first shutout of the season.

Next up - Wake Forest comes to town.

Week 9

Wake Forest (2-4) at Duke (3-3) (-17) No TV

Last season: 27-24 Dukies.

Key Injuries
WR Kerry Huffman - Broken Jaw - Out 9 weeks
TE Myron McGarrahan - Dislocated Elbow - Out 7 weeks
CB Derrick Turnbull - High Ankle Sprain - Out 22 weeks
OLB Wayne Markham - Hip Pointer - Doubtful 5 weeks
WR Vincent Duncan - Influenza - Probable 2 weeks
DT Nicky Hopper - Influenza - Probable 1 week
DT Tommie Woodard - Bruised Sternum - Probable 5 weeks

Preview - Well we took a chance with McGarrahan last game and we paid for it as he reinjured his elbow and his college career is over. We have a few players dinged up but they should all be able to play...but Wayne Markham...a big part of our D looks like he'll be out for at least 2 weeks. Wake Forest had a rough start to their season but they have won their last two games...with one of the wins coming against #13 ranked NC State 31-10. So I'm not sure if I should be worried right now or not. All I know is that it felt really good to beat them last year. When looking at the mid-season stats...one real big positive for us this year is that we're allowing 16.6 points per game which is 16th in the nation.

We always enjoy a good win over Wake Forest and after last year's 3 point win we really handed it to him this year with a 25 point win. Matt Kimball was awarded the MVP...but his numbers were somewhat pedestrian. 21-31...218 yards and 2 TD's. The defense really stepped up for the 2nd week in a row despite the injuries. And the fact that we held a run and shoot team to 157 yards passing is something else that brings a smile to my face.

Next up - A tough one as FSU comes to Durham.

We just landed our most highly touted recruit in the five years here at Duke. Ken Pritchett...the 2nd rated QB in all the land has decided to come to Duke. The best thing about signing Pritchett is that we stole an option type QB out of Nebraska's backyard.

#7 Florida State (4-1) (-4) at Duke (4-3) TV5

Last season: 41-10 FSU

Key Injuries
CB Daryl Back - Broken Clavicle - Out 6 weeks
FB Travis Castillo - Pulled Quadriceps Muscle - Out 8 weeks
WR Kerry Huffman - Broken Jaw - Out 9 weeks

Preview - Just when we grabbed some momentum with back to back victories...we lose two more starters. Daryl Back and Travis Castillo...both Jr's...suffered season ending injuries in the Wake game. Our secondary is wearing thin. On the FSU side...the positives is that the offense is not a very FSU-like offense as they are playing with their back-up QB JJ Van Pelt...but the negatives are that their D is one of the best in the nation. Their rushing D is ranked 2nd and their passing D is ranked 15th in the nation.

You know...I'm really proud of my team because we actually played a competitive game against the Noles for the first time in 5 years. The injuries continued to pile up as QB Matt Kimball went down early in the 2nd...but Joseph Belser played admirably and kept us in the game. We actually were up 13-7 at the half before FSU woke up and scored 21 second half points to pull out the 15 point win. Our running game was non-existant...the passing game kept us competive.

Next up - The tough stretch continues on the road against the Wolfpack.

Preview - This was one of those tough losses last season. We outgained the Pack 349 to 260...but 11 penalties can really ruin a team's chances. Onto this year...the injuries continue to pile up and are really killing what was supposed to be a good season. Now we probably won't finish above .500. NC State is having a solid season at 6-2...with their only losses coming against Wake Forest and Virginia. The strength of their team is S Jason Alameda. Two time all-ACC 1st teamer and last season's ACC Defensive Player of the Year. This season he has 48 tackles..11 TFL and 2 Int's.

Wow. Well Jason Alameda wasn't the ACC Defensive Player of the Year for nothing. The Wolpack Safety totally took over in the 4th quarter intercepting two passes...taking one back for a TD and then recovering a fumble to end another drive. Yet another game that we had control of...but oh look...24 points in the 4th huh? Riiiight.

Preview - I'm not sure what to make of the Jackets season. Sure they're 7-1 right now and ranked #15...but they've had some weird results. They barely beat Wake Forest 38-35...take apart FSU 49-18...barely beat Virginia 15-12 and then lose to Clemson 25-38. I'd like to play the same team that played Clemson please. Luckily for us...that was just last week...and we get our starting QB...Matt Kimball...back. So basically what I'm saying is...I don't know what to expect. This game will basically decide whether or not we'll finish above or below .500 on the season.

This game...just like the Virginia game should have never ended with one team scoring in the 40's. Both teams played a lifeless 1st half and then this Norton kid took over in the 2nd half with 3 TD grabs on 9 catches. So disappointing.

Next up - The end of our season as UNC comes a knockin.

Preview - We've never been so happy to see a bad Tarheel team come to Durham to finish off this woeful season. Last year we were killing the Heels 41-0 before they decided to ring up 25 points in the 4th quarter to make it look respectable. I think the other bright spot about this week's game is that Sr TE Myron McGarrahan is listed as questionable and will suit up for one last time. We really didn't think he would be back this year...but it will be great to see him wrap up his career at home. This season can't end soon enough.

UNC maybe played one of the most lifeless games that I have seen. Now my defense is solid but not dominating and they just made them look like the 85 Bears. The Heels didn't muster a first down until 3 mins left in the 3rd and their 2nd first down didn't come until there were 3 mins left in the 4th. They finished with 4 first downs and 78 total yards of offense. Matt Kimball finished his very nice career by going 28-39 for 326 yards and 4 TD's. And it was nice to see McGarrahan come back for the final game and catch a TD as well.

Next up - The offseason. We had a great recruiting class and despite losing some quality seniors...we should have a very solid club next year.

A couple of surprises in this year's tournament. Tulane and New Mexico made it to the quarterfinals...and Virginia...this year's ACC champion made it the semi's where they were properly disposed by this year's champion Michigan. Their 3rd. Yawn.

It was very nice to see these Seniors go out with a little recognition. Kimball really helped turn this program around from terrible to respectable. And Hickman had 299 career tackles which is a Duke record. This all-ACC award was both player's first.

The National Player of the Year was Stanford Jr QB TJ Johnston.

Passing: 238-408 for 3906 yards with 40 TD's and 16 Int's.
