FOFC Golf Tour - Match Play (interactive tourney)
Many of you may remember the Golf Tour Dynasty that I ran for several months last season. I'm still working on making the game more interactive and automated, but I'm tired to trying to get the training aspect designed and I want to test the game engine.
To test the game play I'm planning on running an Andersen Consulting Match play tournament. If you're interested in being part of the competition sign up here. I'm still trying to determine how many points to distribute at start up, so I'll give you specifics later. Last edited by Breeze : 12-14-2004 at 11:49 AM. |

In. May take until this weekend to come up with a golfer with finals this week and all, but it's all good.

Here is a link to the set up of the origninal dynasty, it may answer some questions to those that aren't familier with the game dynamics.
http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/%7Efof/f...highlight=golf You'll need to scroll down about half way on the first page to see some details. Last edited by Breeze : 12-14-2004 at 11:52 AM. |

OK guys here is the deal:
This time there are 7 skills and 8 attributes you will have to distribute points between. They are: Skills Driving Length Driving Accuracy Long Irons Short Irons Short Game Sand Play Putting Attributes Focus Clutch Resourcefulness Tactician Course Management Scramble Ability Consistency Dramatic You will have 950 points to divide between the items listed above. No skill or attribute may exceed 100 points. For those you that participated in the original dynasty - you may remember having to use some of your points to be able to play different styles - Conservative, Normal, Aggressive. That seemed silly to me - since even naturally conservative golfers can choose to play aggressively if the situation dictates it. This time players have the ability to choose the style of play (Conservative, Normal, Aggressive) for each of the following shots: Driving Style Fairway Style Recovery Style Putting Style So you can play conservatively off the tee, but be aggressive with the putter. Obviously, Aggressive is a risk/reward situation, and conservative will typically keep you from posting a big number, but probably won't allow you to go low. Feel free to PM me your stats. I'll give a generic breakdown (READ "a couple of sentence synopsis") of all the golfers prior to the tournament. I'll begin setting up the Match Play bracket as soon as our total number of players gets high enough or it becomes obvious we aren't going to get more players. The write ups will be hole by hole (being match play it only makes since). In the early rounds there will probably only be a sentence or so describing the turning point of the hole. i.e.: Hole 1 (545 yard : Par 5) - All Square Brian "the Putting Butcher" Babson's huge drive gave him the early advantage, allowing him to reach the green in two. However his horrible putting allowed Sterling Silvers to halve. Babson - 5 Silvers - 5 Hole 2 - All Square -------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have any questions - I'll try to answer them as best I can. Remember this is a test of the game engine - so some of the details are a little fuzzy. However, in some generic testing the results appear to be good. |

OK - JAG just pointed out a fact that makes me look stupid (which isn't hard to do):
When you send in your stats - give me your golfers name. Also you can adjust your playing style (aggressive, normal, conservative) before each round - so you don't have to send that it yet - just before each match. |

Yeah, I'm still going with Silvers.
You don't happen to have definitions of the attributes like tactician, dramatic, etc do you? SI

Quote:
Tactician - when between clubs or forced to work the ball (left to right, right to left, knock down shot, etc.) the tactician makes the right decision which may result in saving par or shoting birdie. Dramatic - Ability to rise up and hit a specatular shot, or series of spectacular shots. Resourcefulness - Shot maker, creativeness. Figuring out ways to recover or execute a shot. Course Management - Playing shots to the correct location on the course. Giving yourself room for error. I think the others are self explanitory - but let me know if you need any additional information. Some of the attributes can work in conjuction with each other or skills or they can be checked individually. Each hole may require a heavier dose of a skill type based on layout. For Example - a reachable par 5 may check Course Management and Tactician to see if you make the correct decission to go for the green in 2. A par 3 might check against your dramatic score for a possible Ace. A hole with a bunch of rough or bunkers will probably check your resourcefulness more frequently. |

JAGs pretty close. It's a bit similar to Resourcefulness and Dramatic. It's basically finding ways to save strokes by hitting difficult shots, it does not imply however, that you are recovering from a bad shot. It could simply be executing a difficult chip with very little green to work with. For you non-golfers let me make an analogy you can relate to - it typcially it involves having a wedge of some sort in your hand and playing a touch shot (insert favorite joke here). Nah, we probably shouldn't use drones. It'll be embarassing when all of us humans are losing to fictitious constructs

We're at 14. Let's at least try to get to 16. I was hoping for 24 to 32, but 16 will be ok.
We can use drones as well...If you guys would rather have a bigger tournament. Let me know what your thoughts are on how many players to have and if we should use drones and how many. Last edited by Breeze : 12-17-2004 at 07:45 AM. |

If we can't get to 16, I'd say let's use drones until we have that many, but otherwise I think we're ok.

Craptacular,
Yes you can join. If you and vtbub both join, we'll have a play-in match for the 16th seed. Unless we get an amazing 7 more to sign up quickly (which isn't likely - although we did have 24 in our original dynasty - so I guess it's possible). We'll do a random drawing for seeds. As soon as I get the info from you and vtbub, we'll get started. Last edited by Breeze : 12-21-2004 at 05:36 AM. |

OK - Crappy and vtbub still haven't sent in their golfers so I'm going to start the tourney without them. Guys if your still interested you can send in the information and I'll work you in as the 17th and 18th seeds.

FOFC Match Play Golf Tournament
This years match play tournament will be held at the beautiful and challenging Pebble Beach Course. Here is a quick look at the holes: Here is a quick overview of the course: #1 - 373 Yard - Par 4 An easy opening hole, but it requires a precise tee shot to a narrow fairway. #2 - 502 Yard - Par 5 Best birdie opportunity on the course. This is a reachable par 5, but long hitters are typically at an advantage here. #3 - 388 Yard - Par 4 Need to hit a controlled draw off the tee to be in a possition to attack the pin. Otherwise settle for par and more on. #4 - 327 Yard - Par 4 Tight fairway, tiny green, swirling winds off the ocean...this one is interesting, but not easy. #5 - 166 Yard - Par 3 Green is sheltered by trees, club selection is criticle here. #6 - 516 Yard - Par 5 Hole plays uphill and typically into the wind. Much harder hole than it appears at first glance. #7 - 107 Yard - Par 3 Due to wind...this hole can play as short as a lob wedge or as long as a mid-iron shot. #8 - 431 Yard - Par 4 Beginings of what is arguably the 3 toughest, consecutive par 4 on tour. The second shot here is long and across a cliff to a tightly bunkered green. #9 - 464 Yard - Par 4 Toughest hole on the course. Cliffs and ocean always a problem here. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ #10 - 426 Yard - Par 4 Just get a par here and move on. #11 - 373 Yard - Par 4 Course begins to move inland again. This uphill hole is a decent birdie chance. #12 - 202 Yard - Par 3 Precision iron shot needed to keep the ball on the green and clear a huge fronting bunker #13 - 392 Yard - Par 4 Catch your breath here, two toughies are coming up. #14 - 565 Yard - Par 5 Arguably the toughest par 5 on the entire tour. Dogleg right, uphill, tricky green. If you get a five here, say "Thank you God," and quickly move to the next tee. #15 - 397 Yard - Par 4 Out of bounds on both sides of the fairway make this hole dangerous. #16 - 402 Yard - Par 4 2 bunkers on the right side of the fairway make the drive positioning important. Second shot must be hit through a chute of trees. #17 - 209 Yard - Par 3 Tough par 3 to birdie. #18 - 548 Yard - Par 5 Difficult to reach in two. Need to make a putt to get a birdie. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last edited by Breeze : 12-23-2004 at 06:25 AM. |
