Any opinions on Nashville, TN?

Just wondering if anyone here lives/lived in Nashville? I am pretty close to taking a job there and moving from Atlanta (had enough of the traffic, and want something smaller....the indie music scene in Nashville sure wouldnt suck, either..)

any pros/cons to life in Nashville?

I lived near Nashville for about a year...it was my rebellious phase and I moved there to be with a boyfriend. It's a nice town, very much like "Atlanta Lite". Don't expect too much of a traffic improvement unless you end up living very close to where you are working, traffic there sucks and they are in a constant state of construction, just like we are here. Have you been there to check everything out and look for a place to live yet?

I spent about two years working in Nashville and enjoyed it. It's got a nice downtown area with some bars/lounges and decent restaurants, a football team, minor league baseball and hockey (not that that really matters anymore). The Vanderbuilt area has a nice college atmosphere.

Housing prices are very affordable (relatively at least), lots of land for urban sprawl but good golf courses, and the weather isn't too bad ableit colder than Atlanta.

It's a bit 'southern' for me (sorta like Atlanta without all the displaced New Yorkers), but I think you'll like it.

I love Nashville. Perfect mix between a big city and small college town.

Ditto. It is number three in my all time best place to live list.

I have visited Nashville a few times for conferences at Vanderbilt. Great city. Really friendly people and everyone is/was/wants to be a musician. More guitar stores per square metre than anywhere I have seen before. I even bought a guitar there and lugged it back to Australia.

I've never been to Nashville, but I can't imagine it'd be on par with Atlanta traffic. Nothing can as bad as the hell that is Atlanta traffic.

Your right. It isn't. But it can be bad, and the construction is annoying.

thanks for the opinons everyone! glad to hear everyone reinforce the impression my wife and i got when we visited there last weekend. The interview was at 8:30a on a rainy friday...8 mile drive took 10 minutes..coming from someone used to atlanta traffic, that was unbelievable. I talked to several folks at the company who live in the brentwood area ( 10 miles south of town)...they all said they take a max of 20 minutes to get to work...sounded pretty encouraging.

Overall, it was easy to get around all over town (at least south and west where we explored). Nothing like Atlanta, any time of day. I was surprised by all the hills..and mansions. The big houses up there made the big ones in Atlanta look like shacks..

Anyway...we really got a favorable impression in every way, so I appreciate the input. After the ordeal getting to work this morning with all lanes on 75 south blocked...the Nashville job cant happen soon enough ...plus, there is a market beginning to open for java developers there, which is nice..

thanks!

If I recall correctly, Brentwood was a pretty sweet area to live. If several of your co-workers are living there, I'd take it as a positive sign about the company.

Dola

From Brentwoods website:
"The average household income for the city (brentwood) is $111,900."

This could be skewed by a couple of country music stars in the neighborhood though.

edited for spelling

Great town if your in the music business.

I laughed at the part of your post where an 8 mile drive took something like 10 minutes. I am from Atlanta and know that traffic scene very well. But here in Seattle it will take over 30 minutes at times to go 8 miles if your going from one side of town to the other.

If your looking for smaller yet still having the modern on the move city, that one should fit the bill.

Construction in and around Tennessee cities is annoying. Knoxville and Nashville interstates are a pain in the ass. But, yea, not as bad as the worst parts of Atlanta.

My brother lived there for a couple of years.

Oddly enough, his biggest gripe was that he had a hard time finding fresh fruit/vegetables.

thanks all....

got the offer this morning...will think about it the next day or two, but 99.9% chance of accepting...

i thought it was a telling sign that the restricted lane is only for a 2 hour period each day in nashville....6-8a heading into the city, 4-6p heading out...whereas here in atlanta the commuter lane is restricted to 2 or more people per car 24 hours per day..

I love indie rock, too...so i know i'll dig getting to see some of the lesser known folks i like in concert..(Will Hoge, Ryan Adams, Bill Mallonee (Viglantes of Love), etc)
