A Bad Beat that would have had me gnawing on furniture.
I subscribe to a mailing list owned by a dilettante poker player. He basically goes travellling to all the poker tournies, and while he isn't dead money, he's not cracked a final table yet (that I can remember)..
But he posted his last event, the first event on the WSOP Circuit (the counter part to the WPT) at Atlantic City, and he had this to say at one point. Dan Heimiller, an aggressive, unpredictable player, took seat eight and immediately tried to make a play on me, reraising me when I raised his flop bet and saying "oops" and mucking when I moved all in. That brought me to 21,000 and I was cruising. TJ Cloutier had been taking some bad beats and when he pushed in his last 2300 in the cutoff it was an easy call for me on the small blind with pocket Nines. He said he was in trouble and turned over Five-Trey offsuit. The flop came Ten-Jack-Queen but then two Fives came for a miracle suckout. TJ was still alive and I was down to 17,700. I lost a small pot and was down to 15,525 at the dinner break. Runner Runner to a set? I would have needed a time out (either walking away from the table, or from being sent from the table because I was swearing big time. But that's why they call it gambling, huh?

See I just don't see it that way. The money was in "pre-flop" The odds are established then. You are a nine-to-one favorite before the flop. Good for you!! But you still lose 10% of the time.
Now if the guys calls a post flop raise or bet to catch the five-five turn and river, then I agree with you. I have a friend who complains about bad-beats when he slow plays a hand. I tell him, hell you were wanting them to stay in and take a chance at beating you.. You can't be pissed that they did exactly what you wanted them to do, and still beat you. |

Hey, I must be getting poker-smarter ... because I've kinda had this realization over the past week or two myself.

I thought you might have been the guy I took out in a EPT Monte Carlo qualifier today...
I was little blind with 10s 7c. It folds around to me, and I raise. Big Blind calls. Flop comes 8c 10c and Ah. I bet, and Big Blind raises. He's been pretty agressive, so I don't think he has another Ace, so I call. Turn is 9c. So I now have an open ended straight flush draw, so I make a significant bet. Big Blind goes all in. I stop and think, does he have a straight or flush already? I'm pretty sure he's on a draw as well, and I call his all in, which leave me with about 500 in chips. I flip over the 10s 7c, and he flips over Qc Js. Crap. He has the straight, and blocks off one end of my straight flush draw, and has the higher club to boot. Crap, only one card in the entire deck can help me, the 6 of clubs. I'm screwed. Here comes the river... you guessed it.... 6 OF FREAKING CLUBS!!!! But Karma's a bitch. About an hour later, I go all in against the big stack with AA. He calls with 95 suited, and gets the flush. thus knocking me out.

It might be more ironic for me to proclaim that I agree with you and Jon. Last edited by Glengoyne : 01-21-2005 at 05:49 PM. |
