Body of chained man found in canal in Pompano

POMPANO BEACH – Deputies are investigating the death of a man whose body was found draped in chains in a canal on Tuesday morning.

As the body was retrieved from the water, several reporters and photographers said they saw what looked like a chain on a leg, an arm and the neck of the victim.

The victim, who was not immediately identified, was fully dressed -- a blue long-sleeve sweater, black pants and black sneakers -- when he was discovered around 8: 10 a.m. by two men looking for a spot to fish.

The C-14 canal, called the Cypress Creek Canal in that area, is crossed by the Florida East Coast Railway tracks, and the body was located on the north side of the waterway near the east side of the tracks behind 1845 S. Dixie Highway.

Veda Coleman Wright, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff's Office, would not confirm that chains were on the body, but said detectives are treating the case as a "suspicious death."

"We're not releasing any details about the body," Coleman Wright said.

She said the body of the man, who is believed to have been in his late 20s, had been in the water four to five days.

An autopsy to determine cause and time of death will be conducted.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call BSO Homicide Det. Frank Ilarraza at 954-321-4210 or call Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954-493-TIPS.

I'm still disappointed that Noop didn't come tailgate with me at the 2003 Miami/VT game.
