Nautical Gay Nudists Denied Paradise

Caribbean Island Won't Let Gay Cruise Ship Dock

Thursday, March 24, 2005

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — A gay and nudist cruise was barred from stopping at the tiny Caribbean island of Nevis (search) on Wednesday after authorities said the group would offend local customs.

A police patrol boat stopped a Windjammer Barefoot Cruises (search) ship carrying 110 passengers on a six-day cruise as it was approaching Charlestown, Nevis, the ship's captain Cornelius Plantefaber said.

Plantefaber said three officers boarded the ship and demanded he accompany them to a meeting onshore that lasted an hour with port authority, police, customs and immigration officials.

The Nevis port authority confirmed that they barred the ship from docking. The ship's name is the S.V. Polynesia (search), a 248-foot four-mast schooner, and most of the passengers aboard are Americans, the captain said.

"We don't want it to be a part of our culture," said acting general manager of the Nevis port authority, Oral Brandy. "It's not a practice society likes here."

Gay cruises, however, have been to the former British colony before and no problems were reported, government spokesman Erasmus Williams said.

The two-island country of 40,000 has a federal government whose capital is in St. Kitts. The smaller island of Nevis is semiautonomous.

"We welcome all visitors," Williams said, speaking for the federal government.

1.) Captain Cornelius Plantefaber is a GREAT name
2.) Oral Brandy is not so good a name, but funny
3.) We need more people named Erasmus.

Those names sound more like names associated with a porn video than a cruise line, IMO.

You know, the way I read this, the "gay" part has absolutely nothing to do with the story, and it appears to have been added for no reason other than to make people think the ship was barred because the people aboard were gay. That doesn't appear to be the case, or it's unclear at best.

The article contains no description or quote indicating what "practice" they don't like or what they don't want to be a part of their "culture." However, we know that gay cruises have been there before with no problems.

So let's see...what could they possibly be objecting to if it isn't homosexuality...

OH YEAH - these people are nudists!

I'm sorry, comedic value aside, that article is misleading. I just can't tell if it's for the purpose of getting people to click on the link, or to imply that homosexuals are being unfairly singled out, when in fact that doesn't appear to be the case at all.

A boat full of naked gay men. What island wouldn't roll out the red carpet?

Fire Island and Key West would probably build the worlds largest Pier to wherever they docked.

Methinks it's dark in that closet, sister.

Didn't really need to, but I fixed it to read phonetically.

Good catch, Ksyrup.
