TCY: The Billy "Air" Adair Story

"And in closing, a high-powered passing offense operating in the manner I described is the wave of the future. I guarantee that if you give me four big play wideouts, a riverboat gambler QB ready to air it out seventy times a game and a dedicated coaching staff, my team could hang with anyone in the country. Thank you."

I stepped down from the stage in the Hickory Room at the NACFC convention in Nashville, amid tepid applause from the fifteen assorted assistant coaches in attendance. Gary Sanders, my coach at UAB the last four years, didn't even bother coming. Oh well, I thought. I could go and try to land an assistant coaching job at a Birmingham high school and work on a graduate degree in my spare time. As for right now, I'm going to the bar.

"Mr. Adair?" The voice behind me causes me to whirl around.

"Yeah, that's me. What can I do for you?"

"Bernard Wells, athletic director at Thousand Oaks College. That was an interesting talk you just gave. Can I have a few minutes of your time?"

I was on a flight to LAX the next morning.

RULES:
(1) The maximum run percentage I will set is 12%, with run n' shoot my offense. No exceptions.
(2) Almost all recruiting is in the greater LA area for as long as I hold this job. If I go elsewhere for talent, I have to spend at least $1000 to get there.

The Georgia game mercifully ended at 5:15. At 5:16, Wells called me on my cell phone. I wasn't even in the locker room yet.

"Billy, do you realize that we just set history? Tiny Thousand Oaks College is going to be on SportsCenter all weekend!"

I thought he was going to be pissed. Actually, that's an amazing understatement. I thought my coaching career was going to be one game long, with the biggest Division I loss in a quarter-century on the line right below my name.

On the flight back from Dallas, I read through the game notes and recognized a major problem. We ran the ball eighteen times versus Georgia and ten times against UNT. Not acceptable.

So here I am after realizing that my little school is 0-3, we've been outscored 169-29, and have suffered the largest defeat in Division I football since the late 70's. And my AD isn't even a little upset! Wells told me that a gimmick offense with a quirky young coach was the only way the school was going to get any pub in a town with USC and UCLA fighting for headlines.

Speaking of the paper, the Times just informed me that Anaheim and San Francisco, two other schools in the California League, haven't won yet either.I now have a new goal: crack the win column before they do.

With 9:10 left in the fourth quarter, we're comfortably leading San Francisco 28-7. My first coaching victory is in sight. Then BOOM!!!!!

San Francisco scores 21 points in the final nine minutes to force overtime.

Luckily for us, we kicked a field goal on our first drive and they imploded first, as Derek LeBlond sacked SF's Bautista on fourth down to seal the deal. We won!

WHO ARE THESE GUYS?
CL Doormat 1000 Oaks Clobbers Anaheim 72-13

According to Thousand Oaks coach Billy Adair, all his team needed was a little seasoning. "We knew that going to Georgia, North Texas, and West Virginia wasn't going to be easy, but that it was necessary to build the program," Adair said following his teams 72-13 victory over Anaheim College Saturday.

Senior quarterbacks Rod Rodriguez and Dex Brooks combined for an amazing 628 yards and eight touchdowns, setting new school records for offense in one game.

Adair and his team have a new entry in the record books: The first team in sixty years in Division I to score 70 or more in one game and give up 70 in another. "We're 2-0 in conference play right now, and nobody saw that coming a month ago," Adair stated. "We just need to keep this up and good things will happen." Adair, at 25 the youngest head coach in Division I, looks to keep his team rolling when they visit Bakersfield next weekend.

UPSTARTS LEADING NCAA
Thousand Oaks College made national news in their 87-0 loss to Georgia in their first game in Division I football. Now, the team is turning heads with a five game winning streak and some of the leading passers and receivers in the country. "It's a fun offense to run," said QB Rod Rodriguez after his team knocked off Stockton 45-13 Saturday. Rodriguez is apparently enjoying himself with 477, 625, and 487 yards passing in his last three games, vaulting him into third place nationally.

Sophomore wideout Wesley Hanson leads the country with 74 receptions in only nine contests. "I may have all those catches, but look at the opportunities we get here," says Hanson. "I could have had a hundred by now."

Not all is sunny for 5-4 Thousand Oaks, however. Rodriguez has been sacked 44 times this season, ten more than any other QB in the nation.

Title Bout
CL's 1000 Oaks, Riverside ready to rumble

Thousand Oaks has the leading passer in the nation in Rod Rodriguez, the top reciever in Wesley Hanson, and a brighter than expected future with young coach Billy Adair. Riverside has no fancy offense, no camera crews filming for SportsCenter, and no losses in conference either. With last week's defeat by Oakland, TOC is in a must win situation to continue its season.

Riverside is no California League pansy, though. With losses to solid Northern Illinois and Virginia Tech squads and one to the ACC's Wake Forest, they are already looking forward to national prominence in the form of a bowl game.

Thousand Oaks and Riverside play in Riverside tonight at 7:30, televised on ESPN3, "the trio".

Riverside shuts down 1000 Oaks 49-0

Thousand Oaks will have to wait another year for a chacne to get to the postseason after Riverside humbled them 49-0. Rod Rodriguez threw three interceptions in the first quarter and was promptly yanked by a furious coach Billy Adair. Dex Brooks was no more effective against a very talented Riverside defense. Riverside will play Hawaii in the Guinness Bowl in Corpus Christi, Texas, in a rematch of Riverside's 30-24 victory from Week One.

Notable season ending stuff...

Georgia, the team that thrashed TOC 87-0, won the national title with a 16-13 victory over USC. The Bulldogs finished at 13-0.

Riverside beat Hawaii 31-13 in the Guinness Bowl.

Penn State QB Derrick Barevics won the National POY award.

Roderick Rodriguez won the CL POY and CL offensive POY. Freshman WR Zack Manning won top offensive freshman.

Rodriguez, WR Wesley Hanson, WR Chester Rusk and S Rusty Ivans were all 1st team All-CL.

My 16 man recruiting class features 14 players from the greater LA area, one from San Jose, and one from Sacramento. None were in the top 100.

I'm having a tough time scheduling opponents that I feel we can hang with in the preseason. Ohio, Houston, and Louisiana-Monroe have all turned us down.

My cellphone starts ringing "Sweet Home Alabama", and that only means one thing: UAB's Gary Sanders, my former coach that didn't offer me a job on staff after my eligibility was complete. Not even as a unpaid graduate assistant. Needless to say, he didn't get a Christmas card last year.

"Billy, why don't you bring your boys down here week three? I got a hole in my schedule I'm having a problem filling."

I smile at the thought of my guys throwing for 600 yards and seven TD's in Birmingham with all the alumni looking at me as the one who got away.

"Good idea, Coach. Can you fax Bernard the paperwork?"

Later that day, I agreed to go to Raleigh as well to play the Wolfpack week one.

PRESEASON OUTLOOK
1000 Oaks Seeks Results, Payback in 2nd Year
Thousand Oaks College starts the 2005 season with trips to North Carolina State, Marshall, and coach Billy Adair's alma mater UAB before returning home to lock horns with Riverside, the inaugural California League champion. Riverside beat TOC 49-0 in their 2004 season finale. TOC will end their second season in Division I-A with a trip to nationally ranked Syracuse.

Record setting QB Rod Rodriguez has exited to be replaced by freshman Karl Buchanan, who is a hometown product of Thousand Oaks HS. Freshman wideouts Stan Lyon, Irving Preston and RB Bart Morton are expected to contribute immediately.

Season prediction: 5-6, 5-2 conference (T-2nd)

Well, I got my wish to come back to UAB as a bonafide D-1 coach...as an opponent. We gave my old coach Gary Sanders a run for his money, but fell short 28-25 after scoring and getting the two-point conversion with a minute left. My freshman WRs Preston and Lyon combined for 18 catches, and Buchanan was 28-50 for over 400 yards, with 3 TDs and three picks. It was a bitter loss, but we were competitive and I feel I showed the brass in Birmingham what a bad idea it was to let me walk.

TOC's athletic director, Bernard Wells, took me out for a steak dinner after the game and reaffirmed his committment to my program. Classy move, but I think he likes the whole "SportsCenter" approach to our offensive philosophy more than those implementing it.

This feels quite a bit like last season, when we were losing early in the year repeatedly while trying to find an identity. TOC has a tough game at home against Riverside next week, our defending CL champion that ran the conference table in 2004. Hopefully we can keep playing our kind of football and pull out our first W of the season.

CL SHOWDOWN!
3-0 Riverside, 0-3 1000 Oaks kick off League play

Riverside has been lurking around the polls lately, as most up and coming young programs look to do. Thousand Oaks is just looking for a win of any sort after a brutal three games on the road. RCA has impressive wins over UAB, Eastern Michigan, and New Mexico State, all mid-majors with winning traditions so far this season, while TOC is struggling to assimilate its freshman skill players into the air it out offense of coach Billy Adair.

Our pick: Riverside 31, 1000 Oaks 14.

Riverside Goes Down
Feisty 1000 Oaks holds on 27-20

Thousand Oaks College scored on a Bart Morton 3 yard run with nine seconds remaining to defeat Riverside 27-20 in CL action Saturday. Riverside was handed their first conference defeat in California League history while TOC cracks the win column for the first time on 2005. Freshman QB Karl Buchanan was 28 of 47 for over 400 yards, and junior reciever Wesley Hanson, the NCAA receptions leader in 2004, finally broke out of his slump with 7 catches for 155 yards.

TOC goes to Bakersfield next week, who they defeated 30-27 least season.

TOC wins 4th straight, Buchanan throws for 580

Thousand Oaks College's Karl Buchanan has thrown for more yards than any other player in the NCAA this season after a 45-17 rout of hapless San Francisco Saturday afternoon. Buchanan is producing over 400 yards of offense a contest, leading Claude Garrett of Colorado by over thirty yards. TOC, now 4-3 (3-0 CL) goes to Anaheim hoping to continue their hot ways.

Five Star Picks:

***** Thousand Oaks (5-3, 5-0 CL) @ Sacramento (4-4, 4-1 CL) -8

Are you kidding me? TOC has won 47-20, 41-14, 45-17, and 59-14 after holding on to beat Riverside, widely considered the class of the California League. Freshman QB Kurt Buchanan has thrown for over 3200 yards in only eight games this season, and they've won five in a row in conference play.

Sacto, on the other hand, lost 37-10 two weeks ago to Anaheim for it's only conference loss, a team TOC beat 59-14 last week. Not to mention TOC beat Sacto 42-21 last season in a game that wasn't as close as the score.

Ten units on Thousand Oaks +8.

Small School, Big Dreams
Tiny Thousand Oaks College to go Bowling

Thousand Oaks (AP) - Billy Adair, the coach of surprising TOC, is anything but a conformist. After a four year career at the University of Alabama at Birmingham playing tight end, he set out to find out how to beat teams with superior speed, size, and skill. Adair thinks he has found a way, and it leads through the California League, a new Division I conference in it's second season.

Adair, at 26 the youngest collegiate head coach in the country, has a vision. Think of the old run n' shoot formations of the past, and play the record at high speed. No huddles, no problem. Adair has a track team in pads on his field, and a local kid throwing the ball to them.

"Coach likes scoring. We have the second leading sackman in the country (freshman DE Jerome Swafford with 20) and he even knows that the key to us winning is to score fifty." says freshman QB Kurt Buchanan, who played his prep ball three miles away at Thousand Oaks High. "We have a bad rep around the country due to one bad game a year ago, and we have to live that down daily."

Buchanan is talking about the teams first game in Division I, a 87-0 pasting by eventual national champion Georgia in 2004. While rivals such as Riverside and Oakland were playing and beating teams like Eastern Michigan and UTEP, TOC was getting rocked by perennial powers such as Georgia, West Virginia, and Big West champion North Texas.

"It was a good experience for us, even though the gameplay wasn't very solid," says Rod Rodriguez, TOC's QB from last season. Rodriguez is currently playing for the af2 (Arena Football minor league) Tulsa Talons. "When we beat Anaheim, we knew right then that we could hang with anyone in the country if our game was on."

TOC beat Anaheim College 72-13 to earn the dubious distiction of being the first team since the 1940's to give up over seventy in one game and score seventy in another. They eventually lost to Oakland to deny a winning record then to Riverside for the league title. This year, they have run amok through the California League, including a 35-20 win over Oakland and a 27-20 victory over Riverside, to earn a spot in the postseason: the Guinness Bowl in sunny Corpus Christi, Texas.

One challenge still remains before a trip to the Gulf Coast, however. TOC must travel next week to Syracuse, who at 2-7 is struggling mightily this season. "That right there might be a program defining win," stated Adair. "Seven losses or not, they still play in the Big East and look at us as nobodies."

If Adair has his way, nobody might call his team nobodies again.

1000 Oaks drops OT Thriller to 'Cuse, 36-30

Thousand Oaks kicker Dale Demeester nailed a 36 yeard field goal to force overtime against Syracuse, but failed to convert on the first possession of the extra period in Saturday's action from New York. The Orange (4-7) scored on a Derek Evans pass to Michael Rosslyn on their second play to emerge victorious. TOC quarterback Kurt Buchanan threw for 455 yards in the loss.

TOC (7-4) will play Big West champion Utah State (7-4) in the Guinness Bowl next week. In related news, Riverside (9-2), the California League runner-up, will square off against Penn State (7-4) in the Motor City Bowl in Detroit. This is the first time that the CL has sent two teams to the postseason.

TOC wins 1st Bowl Game

TOC owns something that area powers UCLA, USC, and Riverside do not right now: a bowl game championship. Well, we know that Southern Cal and the Bruins haven't played yet, but the Los Angeles area might be witness to the birth of another great program. Behind stellar performances by Irv Preston and Kurt Buchanan, Thousand Oaks knocked off Big West champion Utah State 41-15 Wednesday night to kick off the bowl season.

Coach Billy Adair, at 26 the youngest head coach to win a bowl game in forty-five years, was euphoric after the game. "We came here to Corpus to win, and to serve notice that we will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. This team has the top passer for yardage, two of the top five recievers, and two top ten players in sacks and tackles in the country. All five of these young men I just mentioned are freshmen."

Thousand Oaks finishes at 8-4 for the season, and will probably not warrant a national ranking. In other CL action, Penn State defeated Riverside 41-10 in Detroit.

Notable season ending stuff...

QB Kurt Buchanan was the NCAA leader in completions, attempts, yards, interceptions, and sacks.

WR Irv Preston finished first in the NCAA in receptions with 94. Stan Lyon finshed tied for fifth with 74.

LB Courtney Bennett finished third in tackles with 132. DE Jerome Swafford finished second in sacks with 21.5. Bennett and CB Rufus Turk finished tied for fourth in interceptions with seven each.

Buchanan and Bennett were the respective NCAA offensive and defensive freshman, CL, and CL freshman POY's. Bennett was voted second team All-America.

The most amazing stat? We had EIGHT players named all-frosh. Buchanan, Preston, WR Stan Lyon, Swafford, DT Ernest Harmon, Bennett, Turk, and S Blaine Free.

UGA won it's second straight NCAA title, this time without our scalps on their belts.

EDITORIAL:

Rumor has it that UAB, who has gone 5-17 the last two years, is casting their eyes on young TOC head man Billy Adair, a former player under embattled coach Gary Sanders. Shouldn't the powers that be make sure that Adair doesn't leave, especially with that amazing freshman class he still gets three years to develop? It would be a shame if AD Bernard Wells lets this man get away, even as Wells himself has been named a finalist for the vacant Stanford opening. His assistant, former TOC volleyball player Rachel McKnight, is widely considered to be the frontrunner to replace Wells.

Speaking of Thousand Oaks, ex-QB Rod Rodriguez has been hired by Adair as his new quarterbacks coach. Many TOC fans cried out for an older, more experienced mentor to homegrown hero Kurt Buchanan, but those same fans forget that the head coach himself is only 26, with a conference title and a bowl win to his credit.

In closing, UAB shouldn't even be given a chance at Adair, especially since it is widely known that JJ Kinsella at USC and Reuben Tucker at UCLA are both in their late sixties and not wanting to coach forever. With no NFL team in Los Angeles, we need Adair and his unique style here more than ever.

Rod walks into my office in the Nabisco Center with a smirk on his face and the Times in his hand. "Coach, you ever read this rag?", Rodriguez asks.

"No, I'm a USA Today guy myself. Wells usually tells me if there's something worth reading in there."

"Really. Huh. Well, here then." He hands me the state news section of the front page.

"SON OF A BITCH!" I yell at the news of school affiliation. "Riverside and Oakland are now state schools? Call Wells for me and tell him I'll be there in ten minutes."

Rod shuffles his feet and looks at me cockeyed. He says, "Wells left for Stanford this morning, Coach. McKnight is his interim replacement."

"Rachel? Rachel the budget-killer? Are we going to have to bus to the damn bay now?"

"Well, actually we need to talk about your jet-setting football program, Billy. Be in my office in ten minutes." She looks pretty fearsome in her grey suit and newly short, executive length black hair as she spins around and marches out of my office.

"Oh shit, Rod. It looks like she's had the job for ten minutes and I already found my way onto her bad side. This might be a long season."

"Coach, before you go talk to your new *cough* friend, maybe you ought to read this."

Dear Mr. Adair,

This letter is a preliminary offer of employment as the co-offensive coordinator for the UAB Blazer football program. You have come highly recommended by Head Coach Gary Sanders and he would like for you to join his staff in time for the 2006 season. Upon Coach Sanders retirement, you have my word that you will be a top candidate for the head coach position. This offer contains a contract for $95,000 a year for the next four years, with performance clauses.

Please respond within the next ten days.

Warmest regards,

"You're late."

I walk into the Athletic Director's office and marvel at the changes. Gone is the picture of Rod and WR Wesley Hanson handing the game ball to me after the Anaheim game in 2004. Gone is the Guinness Bowl Trophy from last season. Now there's a autographed volleyball, a vase full of little white flowers, and classical music playing in the background.

"Billy, why am I under the impression that you aren't happy with my appointment?"

I'm floored. "Ms. McKnight, I have no problem with anything that you or the rest of the administration is doing. If it wasn't for the chance that your predecessor gave me, I'd be coaching high school ball back in Alabama."

"Which brings me to my second point. Why are you soliciting offers from UAB? That is a breach of your contract with us, and frankly, I'm a little upset."

She's got this administrator talk down cold. "Ma'am, they sent me a letter, not the other way around. To be some sort of coach in waiting until Old Man Sanders hangs up his whistle. Here." I walk over and give her the letter from McNamara.

"$95,000. What are we paying you now, Billy?"

"I am paid $55,000 a season, with performance incentives. My contract expires in 2007. Last year with the bowl victory I earned around $75,000. That still ranks dead last in the California League, in case you were wondering." Take that, ice queen.

"Coach Adair, I am prepared to make an offer to you for three years with a total payout of $200,000. The regents have already signed off on this, but we need to set some rules."

I'm listening. If I can get a raise and only add one year to my deal, I'm going to take it. I can see all my freshman stars dominate until their eligibility is gone, and by then I'll only be 29, ready for the big time.

"Ms. McKnight, you have my attention."

"This school can't afford for you to be flying to places like Raleigh, Syracuse, Birmingham, and the like. From now on, you have to play all games in the Pacific Time Zone unless you make a bowl or it is already scheduled through my department."

Check. We can do that.

"Same with recruiting. Unless they come to you, you must only recruit in California."

Hmmm. OK, I guess. Check. Thank God this isn't Wyoming.

"One final thing. You must cut any player who violates team rules, goes on academic probation, or expresses an interest in a transfer."

Rachel the spinthrift AD assistant has been replaced by the new Rachel5000 - administrative model. I'd rather have a new whirlpool in the trainers room.

Offensive Coordinator Skip Calhoun walks into my office with a crushed look on his face.

"Billy, we gotta talk."

"Yeah Skip, what's up?"

"I'm done. I can't handle the crap from the administration, cutting players with grade problems and the like. Here's my resignation."

Calhoun throws an envelope on my desk and storms out the door. Rod walks in and asks, "Do you want me to call Carlos or do you want to?"

Carlos Snyder is an offensive genius from Denver. He's coached NAIA ball there for at least fifteen years. Rod and I know him from football camps over the years. He's a genius, but he hits the bottle a little too hard. Otherwise he'd be coaching Colorado State by now.

"Naw, I'll do it."

"Rachel McKnight."

"Ms. McKnight, it's Billy. We're going to UCLA week one and to Fresno State week three. Syracuse and Marshall are both still coming here this season."

"Did you cut Preston and Bennett?"Irv Preston led the NCAA in receptions as a freshman, and is currently on scholastic probation. Courtney Bennett was a second team All-American and is in the same boat.

"No, I haven't yet. Final appeals dosn't start for another week. If the NCAA finds out we're cutting players like this we'll go on probation." I'm lying, obviously.

"I'll be watching. Don't let me find out you're doing something behind my back."

I swear she's like the nun in the Blues Brothers, full of venom and her feet never touch the ground.

Bruins Rally, Humble Upstart TOU

Los Angeles (AP) - Ian Crawford scrambled for the game winning touchdown with only thirty three seconds remaining to give 24th ranked UCLA a 29-24 win over newly christened rival Thousand Oaks. "I've never opened in a dime package and stayed there all game, but that's what Adair does to you, " said UCLA coach Reuben Tucker. "We'd like to play them every year, and coach Adair and I talked about that after the game."

TOU's Karl Buchanan was 21-38 for 345 yards in the loss.

TOU Wallops #13 Marshall

Thousand Oaks (AP) - Karl Buchanan was lighting up both the stat sheet and the scoreboard early and often for TOU in a surprisingly one sided romp over #13 Marshall 48-23. This is the third year program's first victory over a ranked opponent. Buchanan threw for 447 yards and 5 TD's while freshman Tim Cantu made his presence known with 170 yards receiving. "We're a dangerous club when we play like this," said coach Billy Adair. "Let's just hope this carries into next week against Fresno State."

4-1 TOU Pops Rival Riverside 28-13

Thousand Oaks scored 21 points in the 4th quarter and rallied to defeat Riverside 28-13 Saturday afternoon. With wins over Riverside, Marshall, and Fresno, does coach Billy Adair think they deserve national recognition? "It's hard to tell right now", said Adair. "If we beat everyone that we play, our record will speak for itself." QB Karl Buchanan continued his masterful play of late as he threw for 363 yards.
