It's me...Larry Bowa (OOTP6)
Fast feet, a strong arm, soft hands, a quick temper, and unlimited determination characterized Bowa's years as an outstanding ML shortstop. Often at odds with teammates, managers, and members of the media, Bowa never let distractions influence his play in the field. When he finished his playing career in 1985, he held the NL record for games played at shortstop (2,222), years leading NL shortstops in fielding (6), and for fewest errors in a season of 150 or more games (9). He also holds the ML record for highest fielding percentage for a career (.980) and for a season of over 100 games (.991). A powerless switch-hitter early in his career, he developed into a tough out, hitting .280 or better four times, with a high of .305 in 1975, and seldom striking out. He was always a good basestealer, finishing with 318 for his career. With Bowa at short, the Phillies won division titles from 1976 to 1978 and the world championship in 1980. Bowa was named manager of the Padres before the 1987 season. A one year contract worth $500,000. 1987 LARRY BOWA PROFILE MANAGING SECTION Basic Skill: Balanced Knowledge Special Skill: Negotiation Skills Difficulty Level: Big Leaguer (Average) Current Team: San Diego Salary: $500,000 Signed Through: 1987 Reputation: Greenhorn Career Record: 0-0 (.000 Pct) Playoff Record: 0-0 (.000 Pct) Years Reaching Playoffs: Years Reaching World Series: Years Winning World Series: Owner Type: Very Nice Guy (Very Patient) Owner Expects: Play better than .500 ball in 1987. From the desk of Larry Bowa:
04/03/1987 This kid Tony Gwynn can play, I am thinking about batting him leadoff this year. Here is what the scouts say about him: "Tony Gwynn is an outstanding player, some might even say a star. You'll never have to worry about this guy - he will deliver. A natural hitter, Tony covers the plate well. He understands the strike zone and makes consistent contact to all part of the field. The longball is really not his game. He may poke a couple out of the yard, but don't expect him to do it often. He has a pretty good eye at the plate. He will draw his share of free passes, but won't hesitate to go after his pitch. Tony is tough to fan. He get's the bat on the ball most of the time. He's certainly not the fastest guy on the roster, but he's smart on the basepaths, and steals more bases than you might expect. Tony is a spectacular right fielder. He has incredible range and soft hands. He makes the easy plays, the hard plays, and everything in between. A real force in the field." Code:

Steve Garvey Press Conference
April 6, 1987 Today Steve Garvey announced his intention to retire at the end of the season. From HistoricalBaseball.com "The most durable player of his era, Garvey played a NL-record 1,207 consecutive games. Originally a third baseman with a questionable arm, he became part of baseball's longest-running infield when he moved to first base. Ron Cey took over at third, and they were teamed with Davey Lopes and Bill Russell from 1973-1981. Garvey projected his Mr. Clean image to the nation in a TV interview before the 1974 World Series when he explained that "I always try to act as though there is a little boy or a little girl around, and I try never to do anything that would give them a bad example." His nickname, Senator, referred to his post-baseball political aspirations. Garvey exploded as a NL star in 1974. He was elected to the All-Star team as a write-in candidate that year, and was voted MVP of the game. He followed this up by winning the NL MVP award, capping a nearly perfect season for the man whose father used to drive the Dodgers' bus at Vero Beach during spring training. Garvey's name would not be left off the All-Star ballot again, and he was elected as a starter the next six years. In 1978 he became the first player to receive more than four million All-Star votes, and he was named MVP of the game that year as well. In ten All-Star Games he hit .393, and his slugging average of .955 is the highest of any player with more than 20 at-bats. One of the great clutch players of his time, he retired with the NLCS career records for HR (8) and RBI (24) and was named LCS MVP in 1978 and 1984. He also hit .368 in the 1981 divisional series. The winner of four Gold Gloves, Garvey retired with a .996 fielding average. In 1977 he hit a Los Angeles Dodgers-record 33 HR, the only time in a seven-year period when he failed to better .300 and 200 hits. With Cey, Reggie Smith, and Dusty Baker, Garvey was one of a record four Dodgers to hit 30 homers that year. He led the NL in hits twice and games played six times. A tremendous Los Angeles favorite who had a junior high school named after him while still an active player, Garvey traumatized fans by signing with the Padres as a free agent in December 1982. On his first trip to Los Angeles as a Padre, he took out a full-page newspaper ad thanking fans for their past support." |
