Question for Hockey Folks
On the TV the other night I managed to catch a glimpse of an older hockey game (I'm thinking 60s or 70s, maybe), being played outside. It was clearly a professional game, and it looked like it was being played in a football stadium that had an ice rink.
Was this ever common? Do you think it would ever come back? |

There was a great open air college hockey game between Michigan and Michigan State at Michigan State's football stadium. I think it stands as the largest crowd ever to attend a hockey game. There was also the Heritage Classic, a regular season game played outdoors in Edmonton between the Oilers and Canadiens. While it's cool to see and a nice idea from time to time, it's really too hard to pull off. It is difficult to keep the ice good if the weather gets too warm or damp. If it's too cold it can effect the players negatively. Rain or snow could force the game to be cancelled.

I think it might become common in that the NHL may play a game or two per season outdoors, but it will never become more than a one or two game event each year, for the reasons H_B listed.
As an aside, Ford Field is bidding for the Frozen Four in either 2010 or 2011. It would be the first time the tournament would be held in a larger stadium, rather than a hockey arena. |

It has never been common, to my knowledge, in the NHL or any other hockey organization. Hockey was originally played on ponds and lakes, though.
Wisconsin just yesterday announced a game with Ohio State Feb. 3 at Lambeau Field. I'm hoping to make it! |
