End of an era in alaskan crab fishing
I was watching the deadliest catch, and it said that they are going to do away with derby style fishing, where you try to catch as much crab before the limit is reached.
Apparantly they plan on giving each boat a set amount to catch. I do see the benefit to this, such as trying to reduce the number of injuries and death's each year. However, the crewmen are well aware of the risks. No-one forces them to go out and stay up for 30 hours. Its a shame that they couldnt keep the derby style fishing, while allowing safer controls or something.

I love deadliest catch, is there a link or anything to where you saw this. The dynamics are very interesting, a 1000 questions popped into my head at once.

Crab = Traif = Not kosher.
Which isn't to say it's not damned tasty. |

I'm not Jewish, but I'll take a stab at this:
Kashrut: Jewish Dietary Laws Animals that may not be eaten ... Of the things that are in the waters, you may eat anything that has fins and scales. Lev. 11:9; Deut. 14:9. Thus, shellfish such as lobsters, oysters, shrimp, clams and crabs are all forbidden. Fish like tuna, carp, salmon and herring are all permitted.

I love this show. Too bad that the risk/reward of derby will be gone next year. It will likely put some people out of buisiness since it wont be worthwhile to crab for some boats.

What is the mortality rate? Can someone enlighten one who has not watched the show?

Actually, I do have a serious question about this thread.
Is this sport fishing or commercial fishing that we're talking about? I'm confused. |

Per trip or per year. If it's per trip, WOW.

This year, a boat went down on the first day of the season. They also had video of a guy going overboard in the middle of the night and barely getting dragged back aboard.

I heard them say the mortality rate is something like 20% now.
Now ships sinking and such, has no bearing on the type of fishing. I think this will help elimnate deaths/injuries from fatigue, but I think it will also hurt the fishermen. Also, I would imagine the owners of the boats may pay quite a bit less now.

I wasn't interested in this until I accidentally watched some of it a couple of weeks ago. Since then I think I've caught the whole season because they were showing it in mini marathons.
On the end of the Derby, I understood them to say that the proceeds from the catch would be distributed amongst the participating boats in a predetermined manner. It seems that not all boats will be able to participate in the new system. Sorta like socialized fishing I guess. As for the mortality rate..it isn't near that high. This year, according to Deadliest Catch, they had six deaths(the season isn't over yet though), and there were 176 boats involved. Last edited by Glengoyne : 06-09-2005 at 05:01 PM. |

You have to remember that is has gotten quite a bit safer. Years ago, the season could last for a whole month. The more time you spend out on the ocean, the greater the risk...
